00:02 A high scoring back and forth affair, Donnie, between the Lions and
00:07 the Chargers ends up going Detroit's way.
00:10 Riley Patterson, a 41 yarder as time expired, give the Lions a 41-38 win.
00:17 Well, over a total around 49, that over under pregame, and
00:22 Detroit picks up their seventh win of the season.
00:25 They're now seven and two, Donnie, and they do cover as a two and
00:30 a half point road favorite.
00:32 >> That's big news there for the Lions because it's one of those games where we
00:34 have the step up.
00:34 And I'm not saying this was a huge step up game because the Chargers are coming
00:37 into this game roughly a 500 team.
00:39 But let's go back to the previous week.
00:41 So it's like, okay, Detroit show me what we got in Baltimore.
00:43 They didn't show up there.
00:44 So is this one of those Jacksonville Jaguar stories, Ben,
00:46 we're going to play out like, hey, really good football team, win their division,
00:49 get a home playoff game, but not gonna factor into the NFC playoffs here.
00:53 That's not the case anymore.
00:54 That was a gutsy performance by the Lions went toe to toe.
00:57 And you know what you like sometimes with aggression?
00:59 You have to figure out what's the style of this game.
01:02 You knew as well as I did, Ben, at the end of the game,
01:04 that you were going to have a controversy either way.
01:06 Dan Campbell, fourth and two, with under two minutes to go, decides to go for
01:10 a play, kick a game winning field goal at that point.
01:13 But he had the understanding, my defense isn't stopping anybody.
01:17 If they have one minute on the clock, the worst case scenario is,
01:19 they're gonna drive the length of the field and kick a field goal, and
01:21 we're gonna be in overtime.
01:23 I have one play to end this football game.
01:25 They went for it, trusted their quarterback and their offense and got it.
01:28 I love that because that sends such a signal to the locker room,
01:31 like we are always going to play to win.
01:34 And the best part about that is,
01:35 I trust my offense to pick up that first down in a much needed environment.
01:38 Because trust me when I say this, Ben, late in the season in the playoffs,
01:41 they're gonna be in that exact same scenario and
01:43 have the confidence once again to go for it here.
01:46 But if we give all this heaping praise on the Detroit Lions offensive,
01:49 rightfully so, finally, how about that?
01:51 Montgomery and Gibbs, both dominating in the same backfield.
01:54 Three combined rushing touchdowns, they were phenomenal in that football game.
01:58 I just get back to the charges and say to myself, you hired a defensive coach.
02:03 You have superstar after superstar, high paid player after high paid player
02:08 on that defense, and you can't stop anybody when it matters.
02:11 We talked about it yesterday on the football show, Ben, and
02:14 I asked this question.
02:15 It's like, is this gonna be the knockout blow for
02:17 Brandon Staley if they lose this football game?
02:19 Not necessarily meaning he would get fired after the football game, but
02:22 isn't enough is enough.
02:23 He continues to stand at the podium and say, trust the guys in the locker room.
02:27 We have the guys that can win football games.
02:29 We're just not winning the close ones.
02:30 Hello, that's what you're supposed to do when you trust the guys in the locker room
02:35 and the service is very good from the players.
02:37 And also you have the ingredients to win football games and you keep losing.
02:41 Sometimes it's not just the players, it's the scheme you're putting them into.
02:44 And maybe if Staley was the offensive coordinator, he's like, hey man,
02:47 what do you want me to do, guys?
02:48 We dropped 30 and 40 again, we're not winning.
02:50 We gotta get the defense right.
02:52 You're the defensive mind on that football team, and it's your fault.
02:55 You get beating every single week.
02:57 It's ridiculous.
