Time flies by, especially in the cockpit of a sportbike. Still, it’s hard to believe that BMW’s S 1000 RR literbike has been in the wild for over 12 years. Over this time it’s created a sizable troupe of active-duty superbike riders who like strafing apexs at racetracks worldwide.

--

BMW Motorrad USA and Kern Track Days teamed up to host a two-day trackday at the 3.4-mile Circuit of The Americas racecourse in Austin, Texas. Open to all sportbike riders, on any type of motorcycle, Double R fest celebrates all things speed. We participated aboard an up-spec M-badged S 1000 RR ($24,715 as tested) equipped with Pirell’s do-it-all Diablo Supercorsa SP V3 tires.

The S 1000 has been fully overhauled for the 2020 model year (read the 2020 BMW S 1000 RR First Ride Review) to be everything to anyone who wants to ride a sportbike and who can also afford its lofty MSRP, which although high, is admittedly reasonable in the segment. With its wide array of electronics, this BMW is a motorcycle that can be tuned to go from mild to wild with a few presses of a button.

Over the years we’ve spent considerable time behind the windscreens of all versions of the S 1000 RR, including the 2021 BMW S 1000 RR MC Commute Review and 2020 BMW S 1000 RR MC Commute Review articles and videos. This German superbike balances on the fine line between everyday street bike and track bike...

00:00 Hey folks, good morning. Well this isn't something you get to do every day. Today
00:05 we are in Austin, Texas at the Circuit of the Americas racing facility to
00:13 participate in BMW Motorrad's Double R Fest. This is a community-based sport
00:24 bike group that likes to experience the power, the performance, the capability of
00:32 their premium BMW S1000RR superbikes. This event is not only open to BMW S1000RR
00:46 owners, but it's also open to all sport bike riding enthusiasts who want to feel
00:52 the thrill of unleashing their 180-some horsepower sport bike here at the
01:00 circuit in Austin, Texas. We are going to be riding our 2021 S1000RR VIN 7785
01:14 here at the circuit and talk about the thrill of operating this high
01:21 performance vehicle here at the circuit. So throw on your helmet because we're
01:25 going for a ride. Alright ladies and gentlemen, here it is the BMW S1000RR
01:34 VIN 7785. Since we last saw this vehicle, it had a recall on its front
01:43 brake components. The old Hayes style calipers were replaced due to a faulty
01:50 design with these Nissan spec and BMW embossed radial mount calipers. The
01:57 master cylinder was also swapped out. A Nissan master cylinder and the front
02:03 brake reservoir is new too. That was due to a manufacturer's recall due to an
02:09 issue with the OE Hayes component. The great thing about modern motorcycle
02:16 manufacturers like BMW Motorrad is they stand behind their products. This
02:23 particular vehicle has a three-year 36,000 mile warranty. Three-year 36,000
02:29 mile warranty with roadside assistance. Unbelievable. This vehicle also has
02:36 received a torque ECU reflash. This is a new feature that BMW Motorrad is
02:44 offering their customers. A lot of the customers have been a little bit peeved
02:50 by the power issue that we described in earlier videos in I
02:57 think it's second and third gear or third and fourth gear. I can't quite
03:01 remember. I think it's second and third gear where it has that issue between 4 and
03:05 6,000 rpm. I can't quite recall. I've been riding so many bikes lately. But this
03:09 vehicle has a torque reflash which allows for maximum torque. BMW Motorrad
03:16 also allows its customer to reflash it with maximum horsepower but you can't
03:23 get maximum torque. So you get as a customer you can either choose maximum
03:27 torque or maximum horsepower. I know it sounds kind of funky. You can also send
03:33 your ECU, your dash display, and this key module and key to that company out of
03:39 Texas and they'll just remove all electronic restriction for you. But that
03:42 of course voids the OE warranty. We have Pirelli's Diablo Supercorsa SPV3
03:53 high-performance street tires fitted onto this vehicle. Note the OE carbon
04:00 fiber wheels as a part of the M package on this vehicle. So we have fresh tires.
04:06 The tires that were originally fitted on this vehicle were the Michelin Power
04:12 tire. Not the latest and greatest Michelin sport tire that's on the 890
04:17 Duke R but the tire that is a little bit older. I wasn't a big fan of those
04:20 Michelins. They weren't so good. I am a big fan of these Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa
04:25 SPV3 tires. So we are going to have a much better time. Alright folks, enough
04:29 talking about this vehicle. It's time for me to fit my leathers and start whaling
04:35 here at the circuit. Alright folks, there is the magnificent 2021 M1000RR. This
04:45 is BMW Motorrad's up spec limited edition the leader class superbike.
04:54 Upwards of $30,000 USD for this vehicle. We are not going to be able to operate
05:03 this vehicle and create content on it today. This is a pre-production unit and
05:10 we will have to wait until the official press introduction, if we even go to that,
05:18 to operate this exquisite piece of machinery. Now we're going to go out in
05:28 the beginner group here at Double R Fest in conjunction with current track
05:36 days here at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Thank you. We are going to
05:42 see how the beginners do it right now. It's worth mentioning that we all used
05:49 to be beginners. Before you can learn how to do something, you have to learn and be
05:56 a beginner. No matter what the sport is, whether it's sport bike riding, dirt bike
06:01 riding, cooking, it doesn't matter. And here at Double R Fest, helping people
06:09 understand the dynamic of motorcycle riding is absolutely key. Because like we
06:20 said many times now, safety and fun are the priority for us.
06:31 So beginner group is good for sport motorcycle riders who don't have a lot
06:40 of seat time on their sport bike, aren't necessarily familiar with the practices
06:47 of sport bike riding at a closed course like we are riding here at Circuit of
06:54 the Americas. This gentleman in front of us is riding an MV Agusta F3 800. How do
07:04 I know that? Because I've ridden that bike a million times, I just know. Like we
07:10 said before, Double R Fest is open to all makes and models of sport bike
07:16 vehicles. We even saw a Ducati Multistrada out there yesterday.
07:24 And you can see this guy for a beginner is doing pretty dang good.
07:31 He's got good line selection, his body position is decent, and he is riding
07:37 smoothly. We are going to make a pass on this gentleman here and then see if we
07:44 can find any instructors doing their thing.
07:50 So let's give her the beans one more time. Oh! I back shifted her. Sorry engine. Oh god.
07:58 I don't know why I'm fumbling.
08:00 That's such a screw up.
08:04 Sorry 999CCI4.
08:12 (engine revving)
08:14 Really impressed with what a difference that DMP fork setting adjustment did.
08:23 Here's the big bump. Gotta be ready for that.
08:27 There's a Double R Fest track day instructor ahead of those two riders in
08:36 front of us. Now it's nice following an instructor because line selection,
08:43 especially at a big circuit like Circuit of the Americas, isn't the easiest.
08:48 There's so many turns. There's 20 turns here. There's a lot to remember and the
08:53 racetrack is ultra wide. And that's what the instructor is doing here. Trying to
09:00 assist with line selection. They will also come up behind you and see how you are
09:10 operating the vehicle in an effort to give you some guidance on body position,
09:20 lean angle, where the vehicle is at different points of the track. There is
09:29 Grant Lopez, the multi-time road racing champ from back in the day who's also an
09:38 American hero who neutralized the active shooter in Florida at the military base a
09:45 few years ago. That guy is just awesome. Super modest, super talented. He is an
09:54 active duty sheriff in Pensacola, Florida. He rides for work as a motor policeman
10:03 a BMW RT-1250. RT-1250. I'm sorry, RT-P1250. I've actually ridden that
10:17 motorcycle in stock and police configuration and it is just an awesome
10:24 motorcycle. I don't know why more law enforcement agencies don't use the RT-P
10:30 bike because it comes outfitted from BMW with all of the wiring and all of
10:38 the necessary accessories you need to configure that bike for law enforcement duty.
10:45 The other bikes like Harley-Davidson's and even the Honda's do not come from the factory with their wiring and that setup.
10:55 You have to wire it in and customize it. And as most people know, nothing is better than
11:01 OE factory in terms of testing and durability.
11:08 There goes Grant. He's going to help show this Panigale V4 motorcycle rider.
11:15 Oh, he's on a Superleggera, I think. My gosh. How to better pick his lines.
11:24 That guy's on a Superleggera. That thing looks sick.
11:33 Well folks, that is a little taste of what you can get at BMW Motorrad's
11:41 RR Fest. Make sure to log on to current track days to learn more. See when the
11:51 next RR Fest is coming to your circuit.
11:58 And thanks for riding with us today. We are going to let the big dog eat right now.
12:10 Oh yeah. This never gets old.
12:18 Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever gets old.
12:22 [engines revving]
12:46 It's almost like a dirt bike section through here where you keep the bike almost upright
12:51 and you move your body from left to right like you're riding a motorbike.
12:55 That's what the S's almost feels like you need to do to really have a good line selection.
12:59 I'm horrible through there, but maybe one day I'll get less horrible.
13:05 All right folks, here we go. We are now going to join the intermediate session.
13:11 This is for riders that are in between beginner and advanced status.
13:18 Now the great thing about these current track days here at RR Fest is everyone is super respectful.
13:26 Everyone is super polite.
13:30 The BMW Motorrad brand just attracts almost like a more professional caliber human being
13:37 where these people are just, they really mind their manners.
13:41 No one's passing each other crazy style.
13:44 Everyone gives each other room when passing.
13:48 I personally only like to pass in braking zones and acceleration zones.
13:53 I'm not a big corner overtaker.
13:56 Number one, because I just want to give people respect.
13:58 And number two, because I just don't want to have any problems ever.
14:03 The name of the game when you're operating these high performance vehicles is safety.
14:08 Safety is paramount and you should never, ever, ever crash, ever in the world, never.
14:14 And that is our goal here.
14:19 We are again riding with this sport display.
14:22 I love how it shows the brake pressure, the DTC intervention, the lean angle, 53 degrees on the left, 51 on the right.
14:31 The on the fly DTC adjustment is just totally awesome. I love it.
14:37 I like to run it in one or two.
14:40 It gives me a good safety net.
14:44 When I get more comfortable with the vehicle and with the bike,
14:50 I can lower that setting and it will allow for more wheel spin.
14:55 But I haven't been riding these sport bikes that much lately and my physical fitness is just way off.
15:01 I just don't feel comfortable right now.
15:03 So that is why I am operating the bike in this setting.
15:10 Here we go, guys. Nice clear track through the S's.
15:17 God, I love how maneuverable this bike is. It is insane how agile this thing is.
15:22 Every time I go through that section, I'm just like, "Geez, how is this bike so agile?"
15:32 You can see the DTC light coming in when DTC starts activating on this vehicle.
15:40 And away we go, guys.
15:44 We're going to gradually warm up and start giving her more beans.
15:49 More beans. I love the beans. Give me more beans.
15:54 Alright. Big dog eat zone. Engage. Big dog.
16:00 Time to eat. What's for dinner?
16:04 Beans. That's what's for dinner.
16:07 Oh, folks.
16:11 That guy held it down pretty nicely.
16:17 Again, courtesy and respect is the name of the game at these track days.
16:29 And I just love Circuit of the Americas.
16:32 A lot of my colleagues and friends don't like this track, but I love the stop-and-go nature of it. It's fun.
16:40 I love braking. I love accelerating on sport bikes.
16:43 And that's what this track is all about.
16:45 Big braking zones. Big acceleration zones.
16:50 This big sweeping rate is a blast, too.
16:54 Let's see if we can get that lean angle a little higher.
16:59 51 still.
17:01 It's just amazing how responsive this motorcycle is.
17:12 Just the whole synchronization of the controls.
17:16 This bike is just, it's really easy to ride.
17:19 And the level of adjustability that this motorcycle has,
17:24 you can really get it from mild to wild with a few swipes of the thumb wheel.
17:32 It's awesome.
17:34 This bike has so much adjustability in it
17:39 that you can easily, easily be a newbie rider and purchase this motorcycle.
17:47 There was a BMW current track day coach helping that rider with his riding technique.
17:55 Riding these sport bikes at the circuit is very specialized.
18:00 Most people haven't grown up riding these bikes in a competition setting.
18:07 And the track day instructors here at Double R Fest really help you sharpen your skill set.
18:16 And become a safer, more capable sport bike rider.
18:21 And that's what it's all about.
18:23 Safety first. Safety and fun first.
18:26 Again, the extra engine braking this vehicle offers really helps me right now.
18:36 My braking ability is just off.
18:40 And I just love having that little bit of help.
18:46 Electronic assist engine brake help.
18:50 Just makes my life easier.
18:54 Once we get more proficient with the braking,
19:00 we can go to a less reduced engine brake setting.
19:05 Earlier I rode the motorcycle with a DMP fork setting at a much lower level.
19:12 I think it was 7.
19:14 And the motorcycle was downright unrideable at that setting.
19:18 It just had so much forward pitch.
19:20 And that's why I like this DDC.
19:23 Although it's actual feel is not the best in my opinion,
19:27 the level of adjustability is very high.
19:30 And it goes from mild to wild very easily.
19:34 And in its maximum setting, I have good vehicle feel.
19:39 I have good feel and I really, I can ride the motorcycle much higher than I could in a lower setting.
19:50 It's really amazing what these technologically advanced vehicles like the S1000RR have become.
19:57 There's just, there is so much adjustability, it's insane.
20:02 Before when you had to fit different parts, adjust things with a screwdriver,
20:09 do all this kind of testing and research,
20:12 these bikes just come from the factory just dialed in.
20:16 It's crazy.
20:18 $22,200 as tested for this S1000RR.
20:26 And I for sure would buy one of these bikes.
20:29 They represent good value in the superbike class.
20:33 They come with a 3-year, 36,000 mile manufacturer's warranty with roadside assistance.
20:42 These vehicles are built in Germany.
20:46 The fit and finish is just insane.
20:49 And the maintenance intervals are few and far between.
20:54 These are excellent bikes.
20:57 I would throw on some different tires,
21:00 and I would throw on the Lloyd's Performance Reflash,
21:07 and away we would go.
21:09 We would be off to the races.
21:11 Quite literally.
21:13 Alright, letter E corner.
21:19 I love this straight away.
21:22 Oh, we are holding the line.
21:24 It's one of the greatest feelings on earth.
21:27 Mountain, big day, E, I'm feeling the force.
21:31 Oh, you S1000RR.
21:35 Yes!
21:37 What a bike.
21:39 How fun is this?
21:42 This is about as much fun as you can have with your brother's seat up.
21:47 Good job, BMW Motorrad, and current track days.
21:54 Alright, boys and girls, here we are at BMW Motorrad Double R Fest,
22:01 which celebrates all things S1000RR.
22:07 We are going to ride our vehicle here,
22:12 this S1000RR,
22:15 that is fitted with Michelin,
22:18 I'm sorry, it's fitted with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SPV3 tires,
22:25 instead of the Michelin Power RS tires.
22:29 These Pirelli tires are night and day better than the Power RS's,
22:35 so I'm very happy to be operating this bike with these tires.
22:39 This vehicle also has the torque reflash,
22:42 the BMW Motorrad Torque Reflash, since last time we operated this vehicle.
22:49 It also has the new Nissan brake components.
22:53 What's up, dude? Thank you.
22:56 It also has the Nissan brake components
23:00 that replace the Hayes brake components due to the recall that this vehicle had.
23:08 Alright.
23:09 Now, I love the 6.5-inch color dash display on all of these Motorrad vehicles nowadays.
23:16 It is crisp, clear, legible, and easy to use.
23:20 Let's go in the menu and customize our settings.
23:25 The level of customization and configuration on this vehicle is just insane.
23:31 It's crazy how much adjustment this bike has.
23:34 We are going to go into Race Pro 1.
23:38 We are selecting Max Engine Performance,
23:44 Full Engine Performance here,
23:46 Engine Brake.
23:47 We are going Max Engine Brake.
23:50 Now, I'm choosing Max Engine Brake here because this 3-some-mile 20-turn circuit is insanely fast.
23:59 There are insanely deep braking zones,
24:04 and I just don't have the strength or the skill right now to slow down the bike effectively.
24:11 So, I want some engine brake to help me slow down the bike.
24:14 Once I get more fit and more comfortable,
24:17 I will naturally go to a less brake setting because this bike has very effective brakes.
24:22 But for now, for today, I'm going to leave it in Max Engine Brake setting.
24:26 And that's the beauty of these bikes.
24:28 You can customize them to your liking.
24:30 Traction Control, I have it in the Race Performance setting.
24:34 We can also adjust DTC in finite measurements.
24:38 We've talked about that a lot in our other review videos,
24:43 and it's awesome that BMW has that.
24:45 Wheelie Control, I'm going to leave it with Minimal Wheelie Control.
24:49 So, it has a little bit of wheelie control. That's good.
24:52 I've ridden it without wheelie control, and I can totally ride it just fine without it.
24:56 But it's nice to have a little bit of wheelie control.
24:59 All right, let's go back.
25:01 ABS. ABS.
25:05 I am going to go into the one level up here.
25:10 Now, I want one level up because I don't want rear ABS disabled.
25:15 I want rear ABS on because even in this setup, the ABS calibration is extremely aggressive.
25:22 You have to be a very, very, very talented rider, high-performance rider,
25:27 to even get the ABS system to work.
25:29 I like to use a little rear brake, especially at a fast circuit here,
25:33 to really help more than stop the bike, to just level out the back of the bike when I'm under braking.
25:40 I want the back end of the bike to lower a little bit, so that's why I use my rear brake.
25:44 But I want ABS on so I don't have to worry about locking up the rear brake
25:48 because I don't have the best feel sometimes on these street bikes with my road racing boot.
25:54 So, we're going to leave it in this setting.
25:57 DDC. DDC is very important.
26:01 This bike has semi-active BMW Motorrad DDC.
26:05 I'm never a big fan of BMW's DDC, but here I do like the level of adjustability they have.
26:13 I've maxed out the DMP setting, so we have maxed DMP.
26:17 That basically gives us the most robust valving.
26:22 So, it's going to have the slowest fork action and the slowest fork rebound,
26:27 which I like at a high-speed circuit.
26:29 Here again, I've maxed out the shock compression, maxed out the shock rebound,
26:34 and that just allows me to slow down the velocity of the suspension in its action.
26:40 This circuit is super fast. There are big bumps, and you really want a bike that has a calm chassis.
26:48 We have this set up under Race Pro Pro 1.
26:52 You can also customize other settings in 2 and 3, but we're going to run 1.
26:59 All right. Away we go, guys.
27:03 We are also going to use the racetrack setting, the sport mode,
27:08 which has a different screen from the street bike mode.
27:12 All right, folks. Let's notch her into gear.
27:17 We have reversed the shift, the gear shift lever on this vehicle, which is super easy to do.
27:24 You don't need to buy any other parts or accessories.
27:27 You just flip the shift shifter the other way, and you have reverse shifting, 1 up, 5 down.
27:35 And that is optimum for racetrack use because it allows you to grab upshifts more quickly
27:42 by just pressing down on the gear shift lever.
27:45 This motorcycle has an electronic quick shifter with auto blip downshifting capability,
27:52 which is another invaluable asset here at the racetrack.
27:59 All right, folks. Here we go.
28:02 Going to do a quick check behind, make sure there's no traffic, and there isn't.
28:06 Thank goodness.
28:08 And here we go on the Koda surface.
28:14 Entering this track is always kind of sketchy to me because you have to round that first turn
28:19 and make sure you're not in anyone's way.
28:25 And away we go, guys.
28:30 This is the S's section of Koda.
28:33 This section of the track requires a motorcycle that is extremely light and maneuverable feeling.
28:40 Thank God this double R is just that.
28:43 One of the things that I really love about this bike is just how agile it is.
28:47 It's extremely agile in terms of its handling from left to right and vice versa.
28:53 These carbon fiber wheels really do make a huge difference in the amount of maneuverability this bike has.
29:01 A big high point of navigating a bike like this through the S's.
29:06 All right, now we're going to upshift into third. Big bump right there.
29:09 We started riding this circuit in 2013 during the Ducati Panigale 1299R launch.
29:20 That bump was not there over the years. This circuit's developed some bumps.
29:24 All right, let's let this big dog eat.
29:28 It's time to let her eat.
29:30 See what she can do as we roll through the gearbox.
29:34 Sixth gear, my favorite gear.
29:38 We broke a little early there, but that's okay. This is our introductory lap at this circuit.
29:45 Now, the good thing about this double R Fest is you have less full riding groups.
29:56 We're riding in the advanced group right now, which is limited to 20 riders.
30:01 Each group only has 20 riders, which is a lot less than a typical track day here at Circuit of the Americas.
30:08 $600 to participate. $600 gets you in, which is a little bit more.
30:14 But considering that you don't have any other people that you have to contend with when you're riding, I think it's totally worth it.
30:23 God, I love this bike.
30:28 Now, there are eight instructors right now here at this track day.
30:33 Normally, there's 11, but only eight due to COVID-19 pandemic and people's schedules, etc.
30:40 And the instructors are just excellent.
30:45 The main host is Nate Curran, who's a multi-town road racing champ.
30:52 He's also BMW's BMW Moderate and Bassable.
30:57 So, the ambassador for the BMW Moderate crew.
31:01 I've known Nate for a long time. We've gone on cool trips all around the world together.
31:05 He's a great guy. I love how he wants to help people.
31:09 He wants to help people get better at riding motorcycles more quickly and more safely, because that's what riding's all about.
31:18 We also have multi-town champ Grant Lopez. He's an old-school guy.
31:25 I think he won the Formula USA championship in 2009 at Gixxer 750.
31:33 He is an American hero.
31:35 A couple years ago, he was one of the first responders to an active shooter on a military base in Florida.
31:45 Some Saudi Arabian dude who was in training there went AWOL and started shooting up the place.
31:53 He was one of the first guys to get there and helped neutralize that threat.
31:59 He saved a lot of lives. He's a very humble guy. Very talented.
32:03 And we're glad he's here today.
32:06 What big dog eat!
32:09 He likes to eat!
32:12 Look at that speedometer!
32:14 Let's see if we can get to 170. Oh, yeah, dude!
32:18 I love seeing 170.
32:21 What a bike this BMW is.
32:24 Whoa!
32:25 False neutral. Sorry about that, guys.
32:28 I just love the handling of this S1000RR.
32:38 It is so light. That torque reflash really makes a difference.
32:43 It helps this motorcycle accelerate in 2nd and 3rd gear between 4,000 and 6,000 RPMs.
32:51 A big improvement versus the OEM configuration.
32:58 I love the sound of these double R's. They have a character all to themselves.
33:09 Very sweet sounding vehicle.
33:12 (engine revving)
33:15 Auto grip downshifter allows you to drop downshift so easily.
33:22 Keeps that rear tire hooked up with the pavement.
33:25 Wheelie control helps keep that front end down just like that.
33:29 Up into a full speed with blazing wheels.
33:33 This uphill area helps you slow down.
33:40 (engine revving)
33:42 Got a Ducati and another double R just past us.
33:46 But they're all talking and riding, so we'll give them that.
33:51 There's an instructor right there, Coy West. Another fast dude.
33:55 God, this bike is so maneuverable.
33:58 I've ridden a lot of bikes over the years here at Circuit of the Americas,
34:02 but none of them have the maneuverability and stock configuration as this S1000 double R.
34:13 Alright folks, it's hard for me to talk right now because I'm focusing on the prize ahead.
34:26 There's that big-ass bump. I hate this bump.
34:30 (engine revving)
34:32 Alright, time to let Big Dog eat my favorite segment of the track.
34:41 Let her eat.
34:43 She wants to play.
34:46 She's hungry.
34:48 Oh, there's food in there.
34:51 Slow down, baby.
34:53 Don't cook. Don't cook.
34:58 Don't cook.
34:59 Sixth gear, because this R6 guy is ahead of me.
35:04 It's all good.
35:05 The line response on this bike is just excellent.
35:09 The connection between the twist grip and the rear tire.
35:15 BMW did really good work with optimizing the rear suspension and the rear, and the swingarm.
35:23 Just the overall rear suspension design on this bike.
35:28 The previous generation S1000RR, when that thing put the power down, that rear suspension had a hard time keeping up.
35:36 This new bike is much more easy to ride. It has a much more planted feel.
35:43 That guy is exiting on pit out.
35:48 (engine revving)
35:50 Alright, let's get R6 guy here.
35:55 We're going to get him right here, boys and girls. Enough is enough.
36:00 Feel the might of the S1000RR.
36:03 (engine revving)
36:09 I'm going to go all the way around and put 190 pennies at the business end of this Pirelli Diavolo Supercorsa SPV3 tire.
36:19 While this torque reflash has made a difference, I still need to take my personal S1000RR on to Lloyd's Performance Shop out of Austin, Texas.
36:33 And have him fully reflash the ECU for a cost of $1000 straight away.
36:42 Delete all of the electronic restrictions and really get this bad boy to sing.
36:49 (engine revving)
36:57 Now the cool thing about Double R Fest is that it's open to all types of motorcycles.
37:02 BMW Motorrad is radically inclusive and everyone is welcome.
37:08 Regardless of their make and model. I love that.
37:14 I love inclusive companies. Everyone is welcome all the time.
37:19 Good job, Motorrad.
37:26 The wheels already carry one straight mile.
37:28 And a checkered flag, boys and girls.
37:41 Alright folks, as part of the Kern Track Day Double R Motorrad Fest, Nate Kern is doing two up rides on the BMW S1000RR.
38:00 He has another S1000RR Double R Fest participant, Significant Other Joy, on the back of his bike.
38:11 Joy wants to understand more about the dynamic of riding a motorcycle on the circuit.
38:20 So she is going to experience it first hand with Nate on his passenger trucked S1000RR.
38:31 It has a big passenger handlebar hand grip on the fuel tank.
38:38 Which gives her a level of stability during braking.
38:50 Braking is one of the hardest, most G-loading experiences on a motorcycle.
38:57 You can easily get -1.5 G if you're a really hard breaker.
39:04 So you need to have that passenger grab handle to hold yourself up.
39:10 We're going past this guy right now.
39:15 With him.
39:19 The tires on both of our vehicles are not totally up to temp, so we're taking it kind of easy right now.
39:30 And away we go, guys.
39:34 Away we go, and look at it!
39:45 And Nate is not going slow. I wasn't looking at the speedometer, so I can't tell you how fast we are going.
39:51 But it felt pretty fast.
39:55 And the whole point of these two-up rides is to help show people what it's like to ride a high performance motorcycle at speed on the racing circuit.
40:14 I heard Nate honking his horn. I'm a big horn honker on the track too, so that was nice to see.
40:21 I'm sure we'll probably be doing two laps. This is just the warm-up lap.
40:36 So we will do another lap here in a moment.
40:42 [Motorcycle engine revving]
40:46 We are riding in the beginner group right now, just to make it a more safe experience for everyone here.
40:57 And there goes the bike on one wheel.
41:10 [Motorcycle engine revving]
41:14 I love this uphill braking zone because you can brake relatively deep into it.
41:22 We aren't braking deep because we're waiting for these folks to turn.
41:26 But away we'll go. There's another wheelie.
41:30 We love the wheelies.
41:33 Look at that lean angle with two-up. That's pretty cool.
41:39 The S's! I love the S's.
41:42 On a side note, on these S1000RRs, I love how the tail, the brake lights are integrated into the turn signals.
41:53 We've talked about that a million times, but that's just a cool thing.
41:57 Really adds a nice, clean aesthetic to the back of the S1000RR 2020 model year and newer.
42:08 And that, folks, is a quick two-up experience.
42:14 If you want to see what motorcycle sport biking is like on the racing circuit but don't have the means to do it yourself, this is a good option for you.
42:28 Look at that lean angle. That's dang impressive.
42:34 [MOTORCYCLE ENGINE REVVING]
42:38 [MOTORCYCLE ENGINE REVVING]
43:06 There's an R1250GS getting some here at Double R Fest.
43:12 Like we said before, all makes and models, even adventure touring bikes, are welcome at Double R Fest.
43:20 Just a testament to how capable that vehicle is.
43:27 [MOTORCYCLE ENGINE REVVING]
43:31 [MOTORCYCLE ENGINE REVVING]
43:55 All right, folks, part of BMW Motorrad Double R Fest is the BMW Performance Driving School.
44:04 These are M-spec automobiles that we get to drive in during the lunch break.
44:11 We are going to go in a 2021 BMW M5 Competition Edition vehicle.
44:18 Let's swing a leg into the cockpit and go for a hot lap.
44:23 617 horsepower.
44:25 There's pound-feet of torque and there's horsepower.
44:30 We are in the 2021 BMW M5 Retail Price, MSRP right around $125,000 for this vehicle.
44:38 Emil is driving us. He is a former professional car racer and he works for the BMW High Performance Driving School.
44:50 Yep, we're ready to see the 617 power.
44:54 Great.
44:56 So just like the S1000RR, this 2021 M5 has full adjustment.
45:04 You can adjust many of the settings of this vehicle.
45:07 Oh my God, here we go.
45:09 This vehicle is no joke. My God.
45:16 It is crazy the amount of G-forces this car is able to generate.
45:23 I have not been in a car that goes this fast in a while.
45:29 Emil is definitely the man and he's driving this car like a bandit.
45:40 And it is important to remember this is a stock 2021 M5.
45:48 We have a 2021 M3 Comp Package in our rear-view mirror.
45:56 What a car this thing is.
46:00 Oh my God, four tires. Look at them.
46:06 On the inside, we are with four people.
46:10 He is a single passenger in the M3 Comp Package right now, but he can't withstand the 617 horsepower we have on this M5.
46:21 Oh, I'm sorry, he was in the M5 too.
46:25 We drafted past him. That is bad ass.
46:28 Oh my God, you can brake so late in this vehicle.
46:33 We are not braking this late at all on the S1000RR sport bike.
46:39 That is unbelievable. When you have four tires on the ground, you can brake hard and certainly go through the corners with an insane amount of grip.
46:51 That is crazy how fast you can drive this thing into the corners.
46:58 I almost feel like the car would be equally as fast as the bike just because of how late you can brake in the corners and how much corner speed you are...
47:06 This is crazy. We are drifting around four-wheel slide. Unbelievable.
47:11 Dude, Emil is the man.
47:14 Thank God this ride is almost over because I'm going to puke.
47:20 Just joking, I'm not going to puke.
47:22 Emil, you are the man, dude.
47:26 You are the man. This car gets them. That is stock.
47:28 This car is fast, yeah.
47:30 Stock M5.
47:32 Dude, that was crazy.
47:35 There you go.
47:37 We are on Continental, so our school is sponsored by Continental Tires.
47:40 We are on Continental. High performance.
47:43 Continental Extreme Sport Contact.
47:45 What kind of tire?
47:47 Continental Extreme Contact Sport, I think.
47:50 Great. That was awesome.
47:54 Thank you, Emil. Good tires. Thanks, buddy.
47:56 Well, folks, that's a wrap from BMW Motorrad Double R Fest.
48:00 We came, we saw, we went fast.
48:03 Make sure to surf on over to MotorcyclistOnline.com to find out more about this event.
48:09 Give this video a thumbs up if you liked it, thumbs it down if you didn't, and we'll see you next time.
48:14 Thanks for watching.
