New from Ducati for 2022 is its Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak ($28,995). This is a variation of Ducati’s Multistrada V4 adventure motorcycle, which debuted for 2021. It’s positioned as an adventure-sport model with a 17-inch forged front wheel instead of the standard model’s 19-inch hoop; think along the lines of BMW’s S 1000 XR.

--

The Pikes Peak is still powered by Ducati’s fabulous 1,158cc V-4. We really like this engine, which is based on the Panigale V4 superbike powertrain we fell in love with many years ago. It has a lot of power, loads of character, creamy smoothness, a handsome sound, and no annoying vibration. It does suck the fuel, however, so it’s a good thing Ducati fitted a nearly 6-gallon fuel tank, so you’re going to have some capacity.

Suspension-wise, this Multi is fitted with Öhlins semi-active suspension versus the Marzocchi semi-active components on the Multistrada V4 S. We didn’t get a chance to truly whale on this bike during its official US press introduction, due to rain and slippery road surfaces, but based on our experience with the Panigale V4 S, the suspension package almost certainly kicks butt...

00:00 Hey folks, we just got done riding Ducati's new 2022
00:04 Multistrada V4 Pike's Peak.
00:09 This is a variation of Ducati Motor Holdings
00:14 Multistrada V4 Adventure Touring Bike
00:18 that they debuted for the 2021 model year.
00:22 Now this particular vehicle is positioned
00:27 as more of a sport touring adventure touring motorcycle.
00:32 Think BMW's S1000XR.
00:38 Now Ducati has fitted 17 inch forged aluminum wheels
00:43 on this motorcycle and a whole bunch of other modifications
00:48 to make this a more capable sport touring bike
00:53 on the pavement.
00:55 This bike continues to be powered
00:57 by Ducati's 1158 CC V4 engine.
01:02 This engine is totally awesome.
01:06 It's based on the Panigale V4 Superbike powertrain
01:11 which we fell in love many years ago.
01:14 I really like this engine.
01:15 It has a lot of power, it has a lot of character,
01:17 it's smooth, it sounds good.
01:19 It doesn't have any annoying vibration.
01:22 It does kind of suck the fuel down,
01:24 but Ducati wisely fitted a nearly six gallon fuel tank
01:29 on this motorcycle.
01:30 So you're gonna have some capacity on it.
01:32 Now this particular Pike's Peak variation
01:36 is fitted with Ohlins semi-active suspension
01:40 versus the Marzocchi, I believe, semi-active suspension
01:44 on the 1917 Multistrada V4S.
01:48 We didn't really get a chance to really wail
01:50 on this bike today, but based on my experience
01:53 with the Panigale V4S, that suspension kicks butt.
01:56 You're gonna be really happy with it.
01:58 Ducati made the ergonomics on this motorcycle
02:01 a little bit more road orientated.
02:04 So the handlebars are a little lower,
02:06 rider rear sets are a little bit higher,
02:08 a little bit farther back.
02:09 This gives more cornering clearance
02:13 if you're getting some on asphalt.
02:16 Realistically, that little bit of ergonomic change,
02:20 it kind of makes for a little bit more
02:22 demanding riding style.
02:24 I prefer the standard Multistrada V4S
02:27 with its lower pegs and wider bar.
02:29 You can still really get some on that motorcycle.
02:32 So it's almost a moot point to have
02:33 more aggressive ergonomics, I think.
02:35 As usual, this vehicle has a very nice,
02:38 bright 6.5 inch color TFT display.
02:43 The display is very bright.
02:45 The menu system, the layout has a lot going on though.
02:48 There's a lot of information in it,
02:50 but it's kind of positioned in different areas.
02:53 So there's a lot going on.
02:54 It takes a while to figure out the menu system.
02:58 The switch gear could be simplified too.
03:00 While I appreciate that the switch gear
03:02 has backlighting on it,
03:04 I don't think any other motorcycle has backlit switch gear,
03:07 which is nice when you're riding at night.
03:08 There's a lot of buttons.
03:10 Ducati could do really well with just simplifying
03:12 the user interface on this vehicle.
03:17 This bike also has adaptive cruise control,
03:22 which is a radar-based cruise control system
03:26 that allows you to keep pace
03:29 with the vehicle in front of you.
03:31 We've used that set up a lot.
03:33 It's very handy.
03:34 It works easy.
03:35 It's very intuitive to use.
03:37 Great job, Ducati.
03:40 This bike also has the same type of brake discs
03:44 and pad material as the V4S Panigale Superbike.
03:49 I always like the Multistrada V4,
03:52 original Multistrada brakes.
03:54 These are better in theory,
03:55 but the previous version are great.
03:57 So either way, you're getting a great braking package.
03:59 It's also worth noting that Ducati
04:01 has three-level ABS adjustment,
04:05 so you can tune the ABS character for your preference.
04:10 The ABS programming on these vehicles
04:12 is at a very advanced level.
04:14 You can be a very, very fast rider
04:16 and really get some on this motorcycle.
04:19 And in a lower ABS setting,
04:21 you're not gonna have a lot of lever kickback
04:23 or a lot of electronic intervention that holds you back.
04:26 If you're new to riding
04:27 or want the extra stability of rear ABS on,
04:31 cornering ABS, this vehicle has it,
04:33 and it keeps you from having any braking instability
04:38 when you're using the front or rear brake lever.
04:41 Overall, a really nice motorcycle from Ducati.
04:45 I love the engine.
04:46 I love how smooth it is.
04:47 I love the handling on this bike.
04:49 They handle great.
04:50 But realistically, this motorcycle costs $4,900 more
04:55 than the standard Multistrada V4.
04:58 And you're not really getting a whole lot.
05:00 I mean, besides the Ohlins suspension
05:03 and the 17-inch rims,
05:05 realistically, the 1917 Ducati does so well on the asphalt
05:09 that this is almost, doesn't even really matter in a way.
05:12 And the 1917 Ducati, you can still ride off-road if you want,
05:17 which is totally awesome too.
05:19 So for my money,
05:19 I would buy the standard Ducati Multistrada V4 S.
05:24 All right, folks, that's a wrap from today's review
05:28 on the 2022 Ducati Multistrada V4 Pike's Peak.
