00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 - In the gun, episode 119 of your new favorite
00:09 WVU football podcast, and it is time
00:11 for our week 12 pick 'em.
00:13 We are coming down the home stretch,
00:14 the penultimate week of the college football regular season.
00:19 You knew I had to sneak that one in there.
00:20 I am Wesley Uhler with the best teammates in the business.
00:23 I got the beer truck running away,
00:25 down the sideline, big dog Owen Schmidt,
00:29 and the signal caller Jed Drenning.
00:31 This episode of ITG, as always,
00:33 brought to you in part by our friends at BetOnline,
00:35 where the game starts.
00:38 Gentlemen, before we get into the recap
00:41 of how we did last week, how our listeners did,
00:43 all these different things, our picks for this week,
00:46 some pretty cool news.
00:47 Beanie Bishop, pardon me,
00:49 our own ball hawking defensive back.
00:50 See, I tried to say that really fast,
00:52 and it just, Beanie Bishop ball hawking,
00:55 Beanie Bishop ball hawking defensive back
00:57 has been named as a semifinalist
00:59 for the Chuck Bednarik Award.
01:01 Pretty nice recognition to the solid season
01:04 that Beanie's having, Jed.
01:05 - You know, last week, when Skylar and I were on with Phil,
01:11 oftentimes we talk to Phil off air, before, after,
01:15 and Phil sits in on all these All-American teams, right?
01:18 These different awards, different All-American honors,
01:22 and it's coming up to the time
01:23 that he's part of those panels.
01:25 So we were making as compelling a push
01:28 as we possibly could for Beanie.
01:30 We're like, "Hey, make these guys alert
01:32 to the fact that he's done this, he's done this,
01:34 he's done that."
01:35 And Phil appreciated it, and he said,
01:37 "Hey, I'm gonna push hard.
01:38 I'm gonna push hard.
01:39 Let's see where this goes."
01:40 So Beanie is having a special season.
01:43 We talked about how often he's targeted.
01:45 We talked about why that is.
01:47 As a boundary corner, it's going to happen.
01:49 He was targeted eight times against Oklahoma.
01:52 You're gonna give up some plays.
01:53 It's all about how you respond after giving up those plays.
01:56 You have to have a short memory.
01:58 He gave up some plays against Oklahoma,
01:59 but he made some plays against Oklahoma.
02:01 He is now putting himself in a different stratosphere
02:04 from a standpoint of playing the ball in flight.
02:09 Guys, when you look at his numbers,
02:11 we mentioned last week he was in position
02:14 to make a run at Brian King's school record
02:17 of 21 pass breakups in a season.
02:21 He now has 19.
02:22 Guess who the second place defender in the Big 12,
02:26 how many they have?
02:28 Beanie has 19.
02:30 - 12.
02:30 - 12.
02:31 - Nine.
02:33 - Wow.
02:33 - Nine.
02:35 Beanie has 23 passes defended.
02:38 Second place defender in the Big 12 has 12.
02:41 - That's what I was thinking.
02:44 - Yeah.
02:44 Now, if you look at all of FBS,
02:48 Beanie leads the nation in pass breakups with 19.
02:50 Number two in all of FBS is 14.
02:54 23 passes defended for Beanie,
02:58 all of FBS, number two is 16.
03:01 He's gonna lap some of the national leaders.
03:04 I mean, that's the kind of season he's having.
03:06 But the truth of the matter is this,
03:08 he has four picks, he's dropped two or three picks.
03:11 You could even make an argument
03:12 he could have had one against Oklahoma,
03:14 it would have been a tougher pick,
03:14 but it was in play.
03:18 To make some of the All-American teams,
03:21 unfortunately, for good or for bad or otherwise,
03:24 that's the one stat that there's more focus put on.
03:27 Irrespective of how much you're helping your football team
03:30 by playing the ball in flight with passes defended
03:33 and racking up those critical incompletions,
03:36 they look more heavily at interceptions.
03:39 So I still think he's one or probably a couple
03:42 picks away from having a real shot.
03:45 Now, guys, I'm telling you,
03:47 if he ends up with two more picks
03:48 and one of them's a pick six game, set match,
03:51 he's an All-American,
03:52 because these other numbers then fall into place.
03:54 But we'll see how it shakes out.
03:56 But he's having a heck of a year for us.
03:59 He was a great addition out of the portal.
04:01 The reason that we signed him is he demonstrated
04:06 at Minnesota and even at Western Kentucky
04:08 before he got to Minnesota,
04:10 the ability to play the football in flight,
04:12 which is something we struggled mightily to do last year.
04:16 We've talked about it.
04:17 We're 123rd in the country and passes defended
04:21 as an entire team defense last year.
04:24 He has spearheaded an effort that's put us
04:26 among the national leaders in both PBUs and passes defended
04:30 almost single-handedly.
04:31 So he has been a tremendous addition,
04:33 both on the field and the locker room.
04:36 You could use a whole lot more portal additions
04:38 like Beanie Bishop.
04:39 - I like how you close with that, Jed.
04:42 That's exactly what I was going to say.
04:43 Let's hope we continue.
04:45 That becomes the norm, finding guys like Beanie,
04:48 because man, he has been a fantastic addition
04:51 in exactly what this secondary needed
04:53 in this 2023 campaign.
04:54 - Well, I'll add this, Wes.
04:56 The two tackles he made,
04:58 and this is what I'm going to mention to Phil too,
05:00 as he's out rubbing shoulders
05:02 with these All-American voters.
05:04 The two tackles, he made two touchdown-saving tackles
05:07 against Oklahoma, two of them.
05:09 I mean, everybody's going to probably remember
05:11 the one on the 50-plus yard completion
05:13 that he chased the kid down from the backside,
05:15 but there was also one in the red zone
05:16 that was an incredible play, but not to interrupt,
05:18 sorry about that,
05:19 but that needs to be part of this conversation as well.
05:21 He's doing more than just playing the ball, Wes.
05:24 - Yeah, no, absolutely.
05:25 That's all part of that big picture.
05:28 That's why he's one of the semifinalists for this award
05:31 and happy for Beanie
05:32 that he's getting some national recognition here as well too,
05:34 not just from us in Mountaineer Nation.
05:37 All right, this is the Week 12 Pick 'Em edition.
05:40 A quick thank you to our friends at Fortis,
05:42 our buddy Rick Lewis,
05:43 the best commercial roofing business in the country.
05:47 For roof performance and financial certainty guaranteed,
05:50 make sure you visit fortis.us.com.
05:53 All right, recap of how we did last week.
05:55 Jed, lay it on us, partner.
05:58 - Let's start with my passing offense.
06:05 I picked as my signal caller offense of the week.
06:09 Last week, the Big 12 offense to throw for the most yards.
06:12 I picked TCU, desperately hoping
06:15 they could pull the upset against Texas.
06:18 They came close, but they did not.
06:20 They threw for 302 yards in a tight game with Texas.
06:25 They stormed back, that's three weeks in a row.
06:27 Texas is behind a 20 point lead at some point in the game.
06:31 Does that sound like a playoff team?
06:32 I don't think so.
06:33 So TCU ends with 302 yards.
06:37 That was good for third
06:39 because Texas threw for 317 to finish number two
06:42 and some team in Crimson and Cream threw for 423
06:46 to lead the way in the Big 12.
06:48 So I am awarded three points for my effort.
06:53 Let's go to, Owen, do you want to talk about this?
06:59 - Sure, why not?
07:01 Team Touchdown, Toothman Touchdown Camp 2023.
07:05 Let's talk about it.
07:07 - You like it?
07:08 Okay, I like it.
07:09 You like my shirt?
07:10 Those listening, not watching, I have a Toothman shirt on.
07:13 - Yeah, Owen, how in the bleep did Oklahoma State
07:17 only rush for 52 yards against UCF?
07:20 - Buddy, I'm telling you, I'm not an expert
07:23 and I know that for sure, but I just, I don't, I'm-
07:28 - I'll tell you how.
07:30 - I'm shocked. - You wanna know how?
07:31 - Shocked.
07:32 - I know how.
07:33 The Kenny Rogers shake the dice dance move curse
07:36 has moved from me to the beer truck.
07:38 That's how.
07:40 - Yeah, I mean, that's what happened.
07:42 I picked the worst team.
07:44 I've actually, I think I picked the worst team
07:46 twice this year.
07:48 - So you are docked a point for finishing 14th minus one,
07:52 which I'll tell you what, that hurts you in this tight race
07:56 among you leaders.
07:57 - Buddy, I know, I know.
07:58 And I, you know what, I was close, not so fast, my friend.
08:03 No closer anymore.
08:04 - Not so fast.
08:04 - Not so fast at all.
08:06 And I'll say this, I wonder if it'll make you feel better.
08:10 And answer your question,
08:11 who could have seen that comment?
08:14 Well, we had one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
08:19 way into the double digits among our listeners and viewers
08:22 picking Oklahoma State to rush for the Memphis Shorts.
08:25 So you're not alone.
08:26 You're not alone.
08:27 A lot of people thought that was gonna go much differently
08:31 than it did.
08:31 I'll tell you what-
08:32 - Instead, it was the team they played.
08:34 - If you-
08:36 - Buddy, how that work?
08:37 - Knew Oklahoma State was going to finish
08:39 with 52 rushing yards against the worst rushing defense
08:43 in the Big 12.
08:44 You need to be doing something else.
08:47 You're either from the future-
08:48 - Yeah, you're the, yeah.
08:50 - Or you better be picking lottery numbers,
08:52 one or the other.
08:53 - Let's be honest, let's be honest.
08:53 You just hit the wrong button when you were filling out
08:55 our Google Docs form, is what happened.
08:58 - 'Cause there was no sensible reason to pick that.
09:01 Okay, so anyway, that's how that shook out.
09:06 So let's move on to, let's go.
09:09 Wes, your defense.
09:10 You picked Iowa State.
09:14 Good choice.
09:16 They allowed 13 points.
09:18 Iowa State playing good football.
09:19 Is it going to be good enough?
09:21 Under the lights at Jack Trice Stadium
09:23 against those Longhorns who like to blow 20 point leads.
09:26 Go fighting Rocco Becks this Saturday night.
09:29 Wes, that was good enough for a second place tie.
09:32 Texas Tech and a stunner in Lawrence.
09:36 Not a very good road team at all.
09:38 Went on the road in Lawrence and knocked off those Jayhawks.
09:42 But the fewest points allowed in the Big 12 this week.
09:46 The UCF Golden Knights and a 45 to three stunner
09:50 over Oklahoma State allowed three.
09:53 So Wes, you finished in second.
09:54 Second place tie is good for four points.
09:57 Ding, ding to you.
09:59 Skyler, this won't be a very long conversation.
10:03 Skyler finished in a first place tie.
10:06 He picked a certain team that ended up scoring 59 points.
10:11 Now before Mountaineer Nation turns on Skyler,
10:14 he did not pick Oklahoma.
10:15 He picked Kansas State.
10:17 There were two teams in the Big 12 this week
10:19 that scored 59.
10:21 Kansas State was one of them.
10:22 So he gets to finish in the first place tie.
10:24 Ding, ding, ding.
10:26 So the full Monty, seven points.
10:31 That's the second week in a row Skyler's
10:33 hit the jackpot with the full seven.
10:35 Boy, you talk about storming from behind.
10:37 It's like he's playing Texas.
10:38 So Wes, do you wanna take a look at the standings there?
10:44 - Updated standings here.
10:46 Jed still our caboose with 14 points.
10:49 Owen in third with 23 points.
10:53 Then it's tight, tight, tight.
10:54 There's been some separation at the top of the table here.
10:57 Skyler 34 points, right on my heels.
11:00 And in the honor of the beer truck, I've got 35 points.
11:04 - Only Matt, that I still have a chance at, so.
11:06 (laughing)
11:07 - The pals.
11:08 - Mathematically I'm eliminated.
11:09 - I can't lose to Jed.
11:11 - You're all right.
11:13 - Come on, you're all right.
11:14 - You're all right, you can do it.
11:15 - I will not lose.
11:18 Not this night.
11:19 - Do not underestimate the curse.
11:21 Do not underestimate the curse.
11:22 - Not this night.
11:24 - All right, let's hit the viewers
11:26 and then we'll go to break and come back.
11:28 - Yeah, not a great week for our viewers, I tell you, Jed.
11:31 - No, it wasn't.
11:32 It was not.
11:33 We had two viewers pick two right.
11:38 One of them was Chris Bennett,
11:43 who picked Oklahoma to throw for the most.
11:46 Shame on you, Chris Bennett, come on.
11:48 And Kansas State to score them, or to a hole.
11:51 Let me see here.
11:52 Kansas State to, let's look at this.
11:56 The fewest points.
11:58 That might not be right, 'cause he picked Kansas State,
12:00 looks like, for defense.
12:02 So anyway, let's jump down to,
12:05 either way, Chris Bennett, it's worth a shout out,
12:07 'cause you got one of them right, or maybe two of them.
12:10 Brian Gray, I know you're gonna ask, Owen.
12:13 Brian Gray, looks like he got a couple right.
12:17 So, shout out to Brian Gray, but you know what, guys?
12:21 It's, when you look at this,
12:22 phew, yeah, that beer truck of the week was very elusive.
12:27 Nobody picked UCF.
12:30 But usually it's like 15 people picking
12:32 the correct offense to run for that,
12:35 but they didn't come close.
12:36 We had, in the passing category,
12:39 this is the most that we've had, four.
12:41 Four got that right.
12:43 Let me see.
12:45 Oh, and the defense.
12:49 I don't see a UCF.
12:51 And the offense.
12:54 Anyway, this was tough sledding
12:58 for our viewers and listeners.
12:59 This was tough sledding this week for viewers and listeners,
13:02 just like it was tough sledding
13:03 for everybody except Skyler on the team.
13:05 And you actually did all right.
13:06 You finished second.
13:08 And by my standards, scoring, what, I have three?
13:10 By my standards, that's a golden week.
13:12 But Owen, I hate to tell you, brother,
13:14 the Kenny Powers rolled the dice,
13:17 tossed the curse, curse has moved to you.
13:19 So who you gonna curse next week?
13:22 You put Cincinnati, we need it.
13:23 - Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
13:25 Now don't put the cart before the horse now.
13:27 Just relax, all right? - That's right.
13:29 - Just relax. - Shake the dice.
13:31 - Just relax, okay?
13:33 - I'm kind of upset you took my curse from me.
13:36 That was the only thing I had going.
13:38 - How do you, listen, you don't know, all right?
13:40 You ain't bewitched over here.
13:42 You don't know where the curse is at.
13:43 (mumbles)
13:44 - I'll tell you what it was this week.
13:45 - Matthew McConaughey, fairy dust.
13:46 - It was in Orlando.
13:47 That's where it was this week.
13:49 'Cause nothing short of a curse can explain anything
13:51 that happened in Orlando.
13:53 - Ain't that the truth.
13:54 My goodness, come on, Cowboys, don't mess this up, all right?
13:58 You got a chance to stick it to the Sooners
14:00 their last year in the conference here.
14:01 Don't mess this up, okay?
14:03 You took care of business head to head.
14:05 Don't mess it up now.
14:07 A final thank you to JR and our friends at Toothman Ford.

16:13 Let's go, Mountaineer fans.
16:17 You're tuned in to "In the Gun" with Wes,
16:20 the runaway beer truck and the signal caller.
16:23 Back in the gun here,
16:27 it's time to make our penultimate pick 'em selections
16:30 as we get ready for week 12 of the college football season.
16:33 This obviously focusing on the Big 12
16:36 as we will all make our gambit of selections here.
16:40 Jed, we're doing this gentleman's way, all right?
16:43 From the back of the list to the front.
16:46 So once again, you lead us off here, partner.
16:48 Who you got?
16:49 Who's your signal caller offense?
16:50 Who's gonna throw for the most yards
16:51 in the conference this week?
16:53 - I'm hoping the ickiness of the curse
16:56 is still stuck on Oklahoma State
16:59 as they leave Orlando, go back to Stillwater
17:01 and head to Houston.
17:03 So the Cowboys with the 14th ranked pass defense
17:06 in the Big 12, I'm going to pick Donovan Smith
17:11 and the Houston Cougs.
17:12 - Oh no.
17:14 - He only had a hundred yards passing.
17:16 So I'm gonna pick Houston to throw for the most yards
17:19 against Oklahoma State,
17:20 who's dead last in the league against the pass.
17:23 What'd we talk about last week?
17:25 The only thing that might eventually catch up
17:28 to Oklahoma State, and we said this elsewhere last week,
17:31 was having the 14th ranked defense in the Big 12 overall.
17:35 So it finally caught up to them.
17:38 I'm gonna say maybe having the 14th ranked pass defense
17:41 catches up to them against Houston.
17:42 I know what Dana's like after he barely has
17:45 a hundred yards passing, which he did.
17:47 So let's see what kind of bounce back game they have.
17:50 - Oh God, I can't do it, all right?
17:54 Listen, I can't have the Sooners
17:56 in the conference championship game.
17:58 Oklahoma State, don't mess this up,
18:00 but I'm worried that Jed might be onto something here.
18:03 All right, Big O, from the air to the ground,
18:05 Beard Truck of the Week,
18:06 which offense is going to run for the most yards
18:09 in the conference in this week 12 slate?
18:11 - My head's spinning here, dog.
18:16 I'm going with, I'm gonna do Oklahoma against BYU.
18:21 - Through the Kenny Powers dice.
18:24 - I threw a dog.
18:25 - I think it's good.
18:26 I think that's good.
18:27 I was thinking you were gonna go
18:28 with one of the Oklahoma schools here.
18:30 I don't think you can go wrong with either.
18:33 That's a good 10 AM start there in, what is it, Provo.
18:38 - Look what Owen said to me.
18:40 We put the standings in the group chat
18:41 and he said, "Jed is tanking."
18:43 Yeah, I'm going for the first overall pick.
18:44 I'm gonna take two.
18:45 - Hey, I didn't say you were tanking.
18:47 - Skyler said that, dog.
18:49 - Skyler said it, that's right.
18:51 You just laughed at it, I got you.
18:52 - Jed is tanking for Caleb Williams, all right?
18:57 The rest of us are focused on a trophy here still as well.
19:02 All right, so Jed goes Houston for passing offense.
19:06 Owen goes Sooners for rushing attack.
19:10 Skyler is also gonna go with the Sooners as well too
19:13 as his big 12 offense of the week.
19:14 Who's gonna score the most points?
19:16 Again, that 10 AM start out there in Utah against BYU.
19:21 I wonder what those fans will be like for a 10 AM kickoff.
19:23 They'll probably be serving brunch throughout the stands
19:26 and inviting everybody to take naps in the RV
19:29 and things like that.
19:31 That'll be an early one out there for BYU fans.
19:34 - BYU plus eight turnover margin at home.
19:37 - Yeah, well, they are 24 point dogs at home to the Sooners.
19:41 - Yes, they are.
19:41 - They're on Saturday morning.
19:44 And finally, I will make my pick
19:47 for big 12 defense of the week.
19:48 Who's going to put the clamps down,
19:50 give up the least amount of points?
19:53 Jed, it stops here.
19:56 Texas is my pick this week, all right?
20:00 They're not gonna get out to a big lead
20:02 and then give up the three touchdowns out of nowhere
20:04 this week to the Cyclones.
20:05 I know what I'm doing here.
20:07 I know Jack Trice Stadium is where hopes and dreams
20:10 go to die.
20:11 And this is a Saturday night game at Jack Trice Stadium
20:15 and a team that Texas that has a lot of hopes
20:17 still on the board.
20:18 College football playoff still on the board,
20:20 big 12 title, all these different things.
20:23 I know the history,
20:25 but Texas is gonna get it right this week.
20:27 Texas is gonna go there
20:28 and put the clamps down on the Cyclones.
20:31 Give me the long horns as my big 12 defense of the week.
20:34 - Just so I understand this.
20:36 Okay, now, just so I understand this,
20:38 you are in a one point race with Schuyler.
20:41 You have 35, Schuyler has 34.
20:43 - Correct.
20:44 - And for an offense, he picked Oklahoma
20:46 and for a defense, you picked Texas.
20:48 That's what we have to live with this week.
20:50 - Little red river.
20:50 - Now, Schuyler, bear in mind, you're listening.
20:52 I did say they're plus eight at home
20:54 in turnover margin BYU,
20:55 but they were minus three last week against Iowa State.
20:58 So maybe that's a trend, I don't know.
20:59 But wow, you guys are going Oklahoma and Texas
21:03 in the most meaningful matchup in our pick 'em of the year.
21:06 Wow.
21:08 This thing just stinks to high heaven.
21:10 Doesn't it, Owen?
21:11 You picked Oklahoma too.
21:13 - He did, he did.
21:15 I thought about, I thought about going mountaineers.
21:18 - Oklahoma just put the cheek beating on us.
21:21 - Sorry, dog.
21:22 And I don't know what's going on
21:24 with Oklahoma State right now.
21:25 They might bounce back.
21:27 I don't know.
21:28 But after that beating, who knows what's going on?
21:31 I don't even know if the team
21:33 even knows what's going on after that.
21:35 - Maybe I'm just speaking this one into existence
21:40 because I want Texas to, if it happens,
21:43 go beat up on Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game.
21:46 But I got a good feeling.
21:48 Texas?
21:50 Remember the last time they were there?
21:52 - They played, oh, in Ames.
21:55 I don't know if I remember.
21:55 I thought you were talking Big 12 Championship.
21:58 - It was like 10-7 at the half or something,
21:59 and they got beat 30-7.
22:01 And that's with the altercation on the bus
22:03 with the coach and the player.
22:04 Remember?
22:04 Yeah, that was that game.
22:05 That was that game.
22:06 It was a night game in Ames.
22:08 Two years ago.
22:09 - A lot of funky things happen in night games in Ames,
22:12 but not this time.
22:13 Not so fast.
22:15 Let's not talk about it.
22:16 All right, let's move on.
22:16 Let's move on.
22:17 I'm going longhorn.

23:19 seat on the throne is getting hot here.

23:23 Skyler is coming for my iron throne, I tell ya.
23:27 I'll see if I can hold him off
23:28 before the White Walkers get here in a couple weeks.
