The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace 162TSI has been coined as the hot hatch of SUVs. It shares an engine with the outgoing Volkswagen Golf GTI and has enough room for seven passengers on board (it's a 7 seat SUV). But, how practical is it? Paul Maric reviews the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace 162TSI Highline!

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. That car behind me, the Volkswagen Tiguan.
00:03 Up until recently, the 162 TSI in the Highline had the same engine as the Golf GTI.
00:09 So, is this car the hot hatch of seven-seat SUVs?
00:13 That's what I want to find out today.
00:15 It kicks off from a little over $52,000, and the Highline is the top of the Tiguan range.
00:21 This is the Allspace, though, the seven-seater.
00:23 The Allspace is just $1,500 more than the equivalent Tiguan.
00:26 And then in terms of its competitors, it competes with the seven-seat X-Trail.
00:29 Seven-seat CR-V, but it kind of also crosses the bridge into Santa Fe and Sorrento territory as well.
00:35 Today, we're going to do a detailed review, and if you're impatient and you want to skip ahead,
00:38 you can use the time codes up there, or if you're on YouTube,
00:41 just scroll down to the description and click on the links.
00:43 While you're there as well, I'd love it if you could hit subscribe and also press the bell icon.
00:47 That'll tell you every single time we jump behind the wheel of a hot hatch seven-seat SUV.
00:53 Let's talk about the exterior. It's not bad, reasonable size.
00:57 And that's because it's a seven-seat, but doesn't want to be a big seven-seat.
01:01 This one here is the R-Line, and you know it's the R-Line because it says R-Line.
01:05 It's got the R-Line body kit, so you may as well get the R-Line body kit and the package that comes with it as an option,
01:11 because if you're going for the Highline, you've got the pokey engine,
01:14 you want everyone to know that you're in a sporty SUV.
01:16 Comes with six colours, and all but the base white is $800 extra.
01:20 I really like the design of this car. It's not conservative, which is kind of what Volkswagen is used to.
01:26 And then you can see up the front here that in addition to that R-Line highlight package,
01:31 you've got some chrome that offsets beautifully with that colour.
01:34 Black highlights down the bottom as well.
01:36 And they've integrated all the safety systems nicely, so you can see the camera tucked away in there.
01:39 The front parking sensors, it's got front and rear parking sensors.
01:43 It really is sort of nicely packaged.
01:44 And over here at the headlights, full LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED indicator as well.
01:51 And then if you jump along to the side here, Highline comes standard with 19-inch alloy wheels,
01:56 but the R-Line package that is attached to this car adds 20-inch alloy wheels.
02:00 I'll be keen to see today when we go for a drive whether this affects the ride,
02:03 because 20 inches, low profile, it's probably going to be a little bit rough,
02:08 but it does have adaptive suspension, so we'll see how that goes.
02:11 Another R-Line badge here.
02:12 Also, did you know, if you see this parking sensor here and then one on the back,
02:16 they're not strictly just for parking.
02:18 This has a double purpose.
02:20 So one, it is for the blind spot monitor.
02:21 It's able to tell when a car is in your blind spot and when it leaves your blind spot.
02:25 But also, when the car is doing its self-parking feature, it'll be able to pull into the spot on its own,
02:30 and it uses these sensors on the side to make sure you don't hit another car while it is self-parking.
02:35 Mirrors with the indicator included.
02:37 You then have no panoramic sunroof, which is a bit disappointing, but these chrome roof rails, privacy glass.
02:42 And then if you have a look down the side here, you've got this edgy-looking panel that sticks out.
02:47 It kind of gives it a bit of a muscular look.
02:48 And if you come around to the back here, more chrome body bolster things there
02:54 to make sure everyone knows that you're driving an SUV.
02:56 Although, not a fan of this panel gap.
02:58 Have a look at that.
02:59 Can almost fit my finger in there.
03:00 The other side is pretty much flush.
03:02 Four-motion badge because this is all-wheel drive, of course, and the all-space badge on the back.
03:06 That's going to differentiate this from the regular Tiguan, which is just five seats.
03:09 And then finally, the R-Line comes with this black spoiler as well.
03:12 It's a pretty good-looking rear, and it kind of gives you the impression that this is more of a hatch than an SUV.
03:18 Let's talk about interior.
03:19 The Germans tend to have a bit of a habit of making things look bland and boring,
03:23 and I reckon this is kind of on the bland side.
03:25 It is nice in the sense that you're getting big screens everywhere,
03:29 but it is just a lot of black, and you're getting black around the infotainment system,
03:33 dark around the air vents.
03:34 It'd be nice to have a bit of color separation or even some packages you could add on here
03:38 to just split the interior up just a little bit.
03:41 But let's put that to one side.
03:43 We talked about the R-Line exterior package earlier.
03:45 That also follows through inside the cabin.
03:47 You're getting unique seats with R-Line badging, alloy pedals, R-Line scuff plates.
03:52 You definitely get the feeling that this is a sportier version of the regular Tiguan,
03:56 so it feels like it is worth your almost $3,000 investment.
03:59 What about build quality and hardness?
04:01 Well, let's get our hardness tester out.
04:03 We'll see how soft that dashboard is.
04:05 This is a durometer.
04:06 It measures the softness scale from 0 to 100, where 0 is soft and 100 is hard,
04:11 and I use this on dashboards to see how soft-touch the soft-touch dashboard actually is.
04:16 Let's give that a shot.
04:18 That's pretty impressive.
04:19 That sort of caps out at around 70 there.
04:21 Let's try this center console lid.
04:24 Push that down.
04:26 That's good as well, 45.
04:27 So that is impressive.
04:28 What about build quality?
04:30 It all actually feels pretty good.
04:32 We did have that slight issue there with the taillight at the back,
04:35 but outside of that, everything feels nice and sturdy.
04:37 It feels like you're getting good value for money with this kind of spend.
04:41 Let's talk infotainment.
04:42 Volkswagen has moved the game forward in terms of technology they fit within their cars,
04:46 and today I'm going to give you a detailed review of Discover Pro.
04:50 You might find some other Volkswagens with similar-looking infotainment systems.
04:54 They use what they call Discover Media.
04:56 The difference between those two systems is that they both have similar-sized screens.
05:00 This one's a 9.2-inch color touchscreen,
05:03 but Discover Pro comes with a better processor, internal storage,
05:06 and the ability for you to have maps on both the digital cockpit ahead of the driver
05:10 plus the screen itself.
05:12 So you're getting a little bit more bang for buck there.
05:14 This is what the home screen looks like.
05:16 You've got navigation and then a submenu for telephone and media.
05:20 Let's kick things off here with navigation.
05:22 The screen itself is fast and easy to use.
05:26 It comes with auto zoom functions as well,
05:28 which means when you set auto zoom and you're on a freeway, for example,
05:31 it will zoom out so you can see more of the road.
05:33 As you approach an intersection, it will zoom in so you can see the roads around you.
05:37 What you'll notice as well is when my finger approaches the screen,
05:40 it detects that and then it presents me with submenus,
05:43 so I can get a bit more quality out of the screen
05:45 and not have the menus there all the time until I need them.
05:48 How quick is navigation input?
05:50 Let's give this a shot. I'll try type in Melbourne Airport.
05:54 So I can already see there it's quite fast in terms of processing that.
05:59 And then we go, it's got the suburbs.
06:00 And then if I scroll down, points of interest as well.
06:03 You can also use voice recognition.
06:04 The button on the steering wheel allows you to make phone calls,
06:07 enter navigation, address, destinations.
06:08 And then if you do have your phone connected,
06:11 it will then allow you to send commands through the phone as well.
06:13 In terms of smartphone mirroring, you have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
06:17 Both of those operate wired, so it's not a wireless system.
06:21 I'll show you what that looks like.
06:22 The integration here of Apple CarPlay is quite nice.
06:24 It's full screen instead of just being a segmented screen,
06:27 which some other manufacturers do.
06:29 So you're getting a little bit more screen real estate there
06:31 and it looks high resolution.
06:32 Let's look at the telephone menu.
06:34 In the telephone menu, once you are connected over Bluetooth,
06:37 it's going to present you here with the ability to dial.
06:39 But when you are connected with smartphone mirroring,
06:41 it refers you to your CarPlay menu or Android Auto,
06:44 depending on which one you have connected.
06:45 And you'll see those controls here.
06:46 In terms of radio, it is a little bit disappointing
06:48 because there's only FM and AM.
06:50 You don't get digital radio,
06:51 but you do get these displays here that show you which station you're listening to.
06:54 So that is handy.
06:55 You don't have to take your eyes off the road for too long
06:57 to pick another radio station.
06:59 And then if you're sick of the radio,
07:00 you have the ability to connect to other media.
07:02 And there are a lot of sources to choose from.
07:04 Jukebox is the internal storage within the car.
07:07 You can put in a CD if you're old school.
07:09 SD card slots as well, USB, Bluetooth audio, auxiliary,
07:13 and also wireless LAN.
07:15 So you can connect to other devices wirelessly.
07:17 I love the vehicle menu.
07:19 So you have a number of different options to choose from.
07:21 And while this isn't a four-wheel drive,
07:23 there is an off-road menu that I think really lends
07:25 to this car's adventurous sort of image.
07:28 So this is your active vehicle display.
07:29 You can select what you want shown here,
07:31 and when the car's moving, they will appear there.
07:33 But if we jump over to off-road, have a look at this.
07:35 It shows you your altitude, your compass direction,
07:38 and also what your tyres are doing,
07:39 which direction they're pointing,
07:40 how much inclination you have in the car.
07:42 And then the other cool stuff you can do here
07:45 is convenience consumers.
07:46 It shows you how much extra energy you're consuming
07:48 by cranking the air conditioning.
07:50 This has three zones of climate control.
07:51 So if the kids are putting the air conditioner up
07:53 or down in the back,
07:54 it will tell you how much extra fuel you're using.
07:56 But if you really want to go that one step further,
07:59 there's the ThinkBlue trainer.
08:00 If you click on ThinkBlue,
08:02 it actually gives you tips on how to save energy.
08:04 So take this one, for example, a warm engine,
08:06 a cool way to save, gives you a description
08:08 of how you can reduce your fuel consumption
08:10 by letting the engine warm up, all kind of basic information.
08:13 But if you're not fully across how to save fuel,
08:16 you can read through these,
08:17 and then it will give you a score
08:18 on exactly how you're doing.
08:20 And then the final one there is vehicle status.
08:21 This is where a lot of your warnings will come up,
08:23 and where you can also select different profiles
08:25 for the car.
08:26 Now, see this little hand here?
08:27 That is for the gesture control.
08:29 Watch this.
08:30 So you can sit here all day, moving the screen around.
08:33 It is kind of a pointless feature, but it does it anyway.
08:36 In terms of traffic,
08:37 it will tell you any traffic warnings around the area.
08:40 That integrates also with the satellite navigation system,
08:43 so it can show you which spots have traffic.
08:45 And if there is heavy traffic,
08:46 it will route you around that traffic.
08:48 Another two things I'm gonna show you here,
08:49 the images menu.
08:50 You can load images into the car, or also on an SD card.
08:54 I don't really know why you'd want images here,
08:55 but you have the ability to do that.
08:57 And then there's the air conditioning menu as well.
08:59 This shows you what's happening around the cabin
09:01 in terms of temperatures.
09:02 I like that because it's a three-zone layout.
09:04 You can see what's happening around the car,
09:05 but you can also lock the rear,
09:07 so the kids can't fiddle with those things
09:08 if you don't want them to.
09:10 But I do like this feature, air care.
09:11 So when you activate this,
09:13 what it does is it uses the pollen filter in the car
09:16 to remove dust and particles,
09:18 and give you kind of like a fresher environment
09:20 within the car.
09:21 It is no bio-defense mode in a Tesla,
09:25 but it is still an ability to get some fresh air
09:27 into the car if you need to.
09:28 Finally, let's talk digital cockpit.
09:30 It's a 10.25-inch screen that sits in front of the driver.
09:33 This has a number of different configuration options.
09:35 So I'll show you the main core functions,
09:37 and I'll step you through each of the menus.
09:38 All of your controls for the screen
09:40 are on the right-hand side of the steering wheel.
09:42 So this is what it looks like
09:42 if you just have it in its default setup.
09:44 You have revolutions on the left with the gear the car's in,
09:47 and then the speed on the right
09:48 with a digital speed readout.
09:50 One push of the view button
09:51 allows you to go full map screen,
09:53 and then it pushes the speed and the gear
09:55 on the right and the left, respectively.
09:57 We can then switch through the different context menus.
09:59 So this is another display you can have
10:00 with the map in the center.
10:02 If we go back to our default,
10:03 I'll run you through the different menus
10:04 you can have on show.
10:05 So audio shows you whichever audio menu you have,
10:08 whether you're on Bluetooth, radio, or CD player.
10:11 And then if you skip through, you have telephones.
10:13 This is where you can make phone calls
10:14 through the car's display
10:16 without having to take your eyes off the road.
10:17 Vehicle status, this is where
10:18 all of the car's warnings appear.
10:19 So you can see here that we have
10:20 a passenger door open at the moment.
10:23 Driving data is all of our fuel consumption data
10:25 and trip computer information.
10:27 You can then jump through
10:28 and even get a second speed display on here.
10:30 You can never be too safe in Australia
10:32 with all the speed cameras.
10:33 And then you have other information
10:34 such as oil temperature, your trip computer,
10:36 current consumption, and then an overview,
10:38 which is just everything we've just seen.
10:40 Over on the assist systems,
10:41 this shows you how far you are from the car in front,
10:44 and it allows you to adjust the distance control
10:46 for your radar cruise control.
10:48 Shows you visually what that looks like.
10:50 And then using the button on the steering wheel here,
10:51 you can range between the different levels of sensitivity.
10:55 Finally, you can also enable and disable
10:57 the rest of the safety controls.
10:58 So lane assist can go on and off
11:00 just with a press of that button.
11:01 And then you can change whether the cruise control
11:03 is radar cruise or just a speed limiter.
11:06 And then finally, you can turn rear traffic alert
11:08 and the rest of your safety systems on and off
11:09 using all the toggles on the right.
11:11 Enough about infotainment,
11:12 let's talk about the rest of the features
11:14 that you're getting.
11:15 We'll kick off on the safety front
11:16 with autonomous emergency braking.
11:18 This technology stops the car if you don't,
11:20 but here it works at both low speed, high speed,
11:22 and it detects vulnerable road users as well.
11:25 You have blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assistant,
11:28 a reverse AEB, and also rear cross traffic alert.
11:32 In addition to that, you have heated seats
11:34 for the front and second rows.
11:35 You have USB ports hidden away there with 12 volt outlet.
11:39 You have a self parking feature.
11:40 This is really handy if you're not confident with parking.
11:43 An extra button here to access all of the cameras
11:45 around the car, including the 360 camera
11:47 that comes with the sound and vision package.
11:49 Tri-zone climate control.
11:50 So you have two zones at the front, one at the rear.
11:53 You don't get any zones for your third row.
11:55 So it's just the second row
11:56 that's controlling everything else.
11:58 What does the key look like?
11:59 Let me fish that out.
12:00 So it is a traditional flip key, but don't worry,
12:03 you don't need to ever use the manual portion of it.
12:05 Lock, unlock, boot, and then on the back of it,
12:08 you have the Volkswagen logo.
12:09 It's a proximity sensing key.
12:11 You just leave it in your pocket, hop in,
12:12 press the start button,
12:13 also grab the door handle to unlock, and away you go.
12:16 Let's talk practicality,
12:17 and we'll kick things off with storage.
12:19 Start with the phone first.
12:21 Very easily fits into there and easily slides down there.
12:25 What about water bottle?
12:27 You'll notice that it kind of moves around everywhere,
12:29 even with the grippy tabs at the bottom,
12:31 but there is a very cool feature.
12:32 Watch this.
12:33 That is so cool.
12:35 I love the engineering just in that little section alone.
12:37 That means you can then drop a bottle in there
12:39 and it clasps it in, so it's not gonna move around.
12:42 Door storage for the bottle as well.
12:44 Not the world's biggest center console there.
12:48 In fact, that's really small.
12:49 I would have thought that would be bigger
12:50 given how much room there is available.
12:52 What about the glove box?
12:54 That's not massive either.
12:56 And half the room's taken up by that CD player
12:58 and the manual as well.
12:59 You don't really have much more room outside of that.
13:02 Final thing I wanna point out here is this.
13:05 You have enough sunglass storage for the entire family.
13:08 This section up the front
13:09 allows you to store two sets of sunglasses.
13:12 And then there's another section
13:13 where you can store even more sunglasses.
13:16 I have a feeling that in other markets,
13:18 this might be a screen or some other fancy feature.
13:21 And then down here next to the driver's foot
13:24 is even more storage for keys and coins
13:27 and other bits that you don't want anyone else
13:28 seeing from the outside.
13:29 In terms of comfort, these R-line seats,
13:33 yeah, they're nice.
13:33 I mean, they're not the softest seats in the world,
13:36 but they are comfortable enough
13:37 and they're supportive enough as well.
13:39 So if you're going for a bit of a fang,
13:40 they're gonna hold you into place.
13:42 And I love the wheel.
13:43 It is a very sporty looking wheel
13:45 with a semi-flat bottom and an R logo on it as well.
13:48 Dear diary, today I, oh, hi there.
13:53 Sorry, I was just writing a note on my business table
13:56 that is not really useful as a business table
13:58 'cause it is very flimsy and crap.
14:00 So anyway, I don't actually know what you'd use this for.
14:03 Let me know in the comments below
14:04 if you can tell me what kids are meant to do with this
14:07 because it seems far too flimsy for food
14:09 and you can't really use it for much else.
14:11 It does have a cup holder in the side though
14:14 that doesn't fit my bottle.
14:15 So we'll just pop that away.
14:19 So we're in the back seat of the Tiguan Allspace.
14:21 What features do you have here?
14:23 Let's start here, center armrest, two cup holders.
14:25 Let's see if we can give this another shot.
14:27 So they fit here, which is good.
14:29 Not in the back one, but you can fit like a little piccolo
14:31 or something in there if you're so inclined.
14:33 You get rear air vents
14:35 because you get a third zone of air conditioning here
14:37 and you control that down the bottom
14:38 with a set of heated seats for the outboard seats,
14:41 USB charging for one device, and then a 12-volt outlet.
14:45 You don't get mat pockets from the top.
14:47 They tuck in under these table things.
14:50 And then in terms of room, it's actually pretty spacious.
14:53 So keep in mind at the moment that this row moves backwards
14:56 and forwards to allow access to the third row.
14:59 But in terms of leg room,
15:00 I have my driver's seat in the regular position
15:03 and I have ample knee room
15:04 and really decent headroom as well.
15:06 It would have been a different story
15:07 if there was a panoramic roof here.
15:09 In terms of storage in the doors for your bottle,
15:11 you can fit a bottle there.
15:12 It's nicely padded.
15:13 It's got like carpet, both front and rear,
15:16 and visibility is good as well.
15:18 So from a second row perspective,
15:20 this is a good place to be seated.
15:21 Isofix points for the two outboard seats as well.
15:24 Let's talk third row.
15:25 I'm gonna show you how this mechanism works.
15:27 So it's a 40/20/40 split folding seat.
15:29 To get it to fold down, you just pull this tab.
15:32 The seat drops down to this level.
15:34 You can't fold it out of the way to enter the third row.
15:36 And I'm gonna tell you now, despite the name all space,
15:39 ironically, there isn't a great deal of space
15:40 in the third row.
15:41 It is strictly for kids only.
15:43 This is what happened when I tried to climb in there.
15:46 Tiguan all space.
15:51 Does that mean it has all the space in the boot?
15:53 Let's find out.
15:54 So automatic tailgate opens up to 230 litres
15:58 of cargo capacity with the third row in place.
16:02 Let's see if that fits our luggage just out of interest.
16:05 'Cause this is the biggest issue
16:06 with these smaller three row SUVs.
16:09 You can't really fit anything in.
16:11 Actually, I'm curious to see if that's gonna close.
16:13 Let's see what happens.
16:14 Hopefully it doesn't smash anything or break glass.
16:18 Doesn't quite work.
16:19 Okay, so you're not gonna be loading any luggage
16:21 into the back there.
16:22 This is probably just gonna be shopping
16:23 and other bits and pieces.
16:25 So what we'll do now is fold the third row.
16:29 That's done by pushing these down.
16:32 They get stuck on the back of the seat.
16:33 So you have to kind of put a bit of elbow grease in.
16:36 That then opens up to 700 litres of cargo space.
16:39 And then it further opens up to 1700
16:41 when you drop the second row as well.
16:43 I may as well show you here how the cargo blind works.
16:46 When you open this cover,
16:47 you have room for the cargo blind to be stored.
16:51 And that simply comes into place up here.
16:54 It's slotted into there.
16:59 That sits in nicely.
17:00 Then you have storage space on either side.
17:03 You can close this lid back over.
17:04 You've got a space saver spare tyre under there,
17:06 plus the jack and subwoofer as well.
17:09 I like this.
17:11 You have a light on the side, but it is removable.
17:14 So if you wanna go hunting for stuff in the bush,
17:16 you can take your little handy light with you.
17:17 And then that goes back into its little rechargeable slot
17:21 just there.
17:22 Let's try our luggage once more into here.
17:24 That works a charm.
17:29 And I'll show you how these seats drop.
17:30 One pull of this lever will push that forward.
17:33 Same story on this side.
17:35 And then you have your 1700 litres of cargo space.
17:38 Have a look at this handy feature as well.
17:40 You've got two buttons here.
17:41 One to close the boot normally.
17:42 You push that and it shuts.
17:44 You've got this one as well, an auto button.
17:46 So one push of that,
17:47 you can walk away.
17:48 When it detects the key is gone, the boot goes down.
17:51 So we've hit the road in the Tiguan Highline Allspace.
17:58 Let's start off with the engine.
17:59 I mentioned before that this uses the same engine
18:02 that used to be in the Golf GTI before it got a power bump.
18:04 It's a two litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine,
18:08 162 kilowatts of power, 350 newton metres of torque.
18:12 And it gets the designation 162 TSI for that exact reason.
18:16 It uses a seven speed dual clutch automatic gearbox.
18:20 That all leads to a combined fuel consumption
18:23 of 8.3 litres per 100 Ks.
18:25 And I'm just having a look down here
18:26 at our average fuel use at the moment.
18:28 And over the past 50-ish kilometres,
18:30 it's 10 litres per 100 kilometres.
18:32 So a little bit higher than that official claim.
18:35 Only thing I don't like about this transmission
18:38 is the low speed stuff.
18:40 So if we slow down and then take off from a standing start,
18:44 it can be just a little bit elastic.
18:47 And I don't know, I'm not really a massive fan
18:49 of dual clutch gearboxes for that exact reason.
18:52 The low speed stutters and just the way they feel
18:54 before they get moving.
18:55 Once they're moving, they're great.
18:56 They whip through gears nice and quickly,
18:58 but predominantly they're used by manufacturers
19:00 to gain fuel efficiency.
19:02 And you can kind of feel it at low speed.
19:04 They don't have that smoothness
19:05 of a traditional torque converter.
19:08 Now in terms of performance,
19:09 official zero to 100 time is 6.8 seconds.
19:13 And this is what that looks like.
19:15 (car engine roaring)
19:18 Let's talk drive mode.
19:25 So using this selector down here,
19:26 you push it in and you're presented
19:28 with a stack of drive modes on the screen.
19:29 You've got eco, comfort, normal, sport and individual.
19:33 There are so many to choose from there.
19:34 I don't know why they put so many on
19:36 because people are either gonna go comfort or sport.
19:38 They kind of don't really bother going
19:40 with anything in between.
19:41 The individual mode, you can set
19:43 your own custom calibration,
19:46 but I like to just flick it into sport
19:47 and then see what the car does.
19:49 So speaking of which, in comfort,
19:51 the car's actually surprisingly smooth.
19:53 So I did mention earlier that we have
19:54 the R-Line package on this car.
19:55 It's got 20 inch alloy wheels.
19:57 And while you do get a little bit of noise in the cabin,
19:59 the ride is actually really nice and smooth in comfort mode.
20:03 And that's what you want from a family SUV,
20:05 especially if you're riding seven up.
20:07 Sport mode on the other hand,
20:08 let me give this a push.
20:09 This is the hot hatch of SUVs, allegedly.
20:11 Let's see what that feels like.
20:14 I can immediately hear a bit more noise.
20:16 There's two, three, five millimetre wide tyres
20:18 on all four corners of the car.
20:20 The ride immediately becomes firmer as well.
20:23 The steering is heavier too.
20:25 Let's lean on that throttle.
20:26 Yeah, it feels good.
20:28 A Golf GTI is obviously much smaller than this
20:31 and pokier if I bury the throttle there.
20:33 It picks up nicely.
20:35 It's actually got a fair bit of pep.
20:37 It's holding the gears too
20:38 because when you do put it into sport mode,
20:40 it automatically goes into sport mode
20:42 for the gearbox as well.
20:43 Feeling really nice and sharp.
20:46 And that's what makes this the hot hatch of SUVs.
20:50 Okay, comment below for me.
20:53 Does an SUV need to be sporty?
20:55 And would you go for a sporty SUV over a comfortable one?
20:59 Are you the type of person that needs
21:01 a bit of sportiness in your family life?
21:02 Let me know in the comments below.
21:04 Now on the handling front,
21:05 let's talk about this suspension setup
21:08 as we go through some of these corners.
21:10 It sits really nice and flat
21:12 and it feels incredibly darty.
21:14 It actually feels weird for a seven seater
21:17 for it to feel this sporty.
21:19 On top of that, you've got paddle shifters
21:20 on the steering wheel if you wanna take over
21:22 and do your own shifting.
21:24 The gear shifts are nice and fast.
21:26 And I'm really liking the little cracks there.
21:29 They're only minuscule in between gear shifts,
21:31 but it's good that the car has at least some character.
21:34 You're not just gonna be bored to death
21:36 driving with kids around all the time.
21:38 Let's talk visibility.
21:38 We're in comfort mode now.
21:40 It's all nice and quiet.
21:41 Out the front, it's good.
21:43 I've got no dramas there.
21:45 I can't really see the extremities of the bonnet,
21:46 but it's good enough for parking
21:48 because you've got front and rear parking sensors.
21:50 Out the side, it's great
21:51 because these wing mirrors are massive
21:53 and they have that blind spot monitor built into them.
21:56 Visibility out the back is good.
21:57 It is a slightly narrow window,
21:59 but even with passengers in the back seat,
22:01 you're not gonna be completely blocked
22:03 in terms of seeing out the back of the car.
22:05 So Tiguan Allspace, let's get some things clear.
22:09 You're not gonna be fitting your basketball playing mates
22:11 in the third row.
22:12 It is a pretty small space and it is strictly for kids.
22:14 And yes, it isn't the smoothest ride in the world,
22:17 but this is the sportier end of the SUVs,
22:19 and especially with those 20-inch alloy wheels,
22:20 it's gonna be a little bit firmer
22:22 than what you would expect with some of the cushier SUVs.
22:24 But having said that, this is really sporty.
22:27 And if you need an SUV,
22:29 but you still want it to be a little sporty,
22:30 I think this has your name all over it.
22:32 I reckon it's a little sportier than the Kodiaq RS
22:34 that we reviewed recently.
22:35 In fact, you can watch our review of that
22:37 by clicking up there.
22:37 The Kodiaq RS goes for the diesel element,
22:39 whereas this with the petrol engine
22:41 feels a little more natural.
22:42 And that Golf GTI engine has always been
22:45 a really stellar performer.
22:46 So this is impressive, lots of good tech,
22:48 reasonably priced,
22:49 and now with a five-year warranty in Australia too.
22:51 So Tiguan Allspace, Highline gets our tick of approval.
22:54 If you've enjoyed this video,
22:55 I'd love it if you could hit the like button.
22:57 Also press subscribe and the bell icon as well.
23:00 Let us know in the comments below,
23:01 did you buy a Tiguan Allspace?
23:02 What do you use it for?
23:04 How old were the kids before you had to get rid of it?
23:06 We'd love to get your feedback,
23:07 but until next time, take it easy.
