Mattel Masters of the Universe Origins Serpent Claw Man-At-Arms Figure
Transcript
00:00 Oh great, Duncan's now got to deal with serpent soldiers.
00:03 Here's your look at Mattel Mass Universe Origins Serpent Claw Man-at-Arms Snake Hunting Weapons Master.
00:09 (music)
00:15 (clicking)
00:25 Man-at-Arms crafted the serpent claw as a snake capturing weapon to defend against the snake men.
00:31 We'll spend some time with the serpent claw in a second.
00:34 First, let's grab the tape measure and see how tall the figure stands.
00:36 Now this is going to be exactly the same mold as the earlier looked at Man-at-Arms.
00:39 The only thing that they've done differently is they cast the plastic in different colors.
00:43 And they've also as well included the serpent claw.
00:46 The figure though stands about the same, so he's about 5 1/2 inches in height.
00:49 Or the figure's going to be 14 centimeters tall.
00:52 Because quarters are smaller when we bring him in, I'm going to bring him in first.
00:55 Here's what the figure looks like with the other figure from this wave, Squeeze.
00:59 Here's also as well what the figure looks like with the earlier looked at Spycore.
01:02 And seeing as well that this is of course someone from He-Man's army.
01:05 Here's what he looks like with the original Mass Universe Origins He-Man.
01:08 And of course, as I already mentioned, he's using the same mold as the original Mass Universe Man-at-Arms.
01:12 And here's what the two figures look like together.
01:14 Of the two things that come with Man-at-Arms first, one belongs in a recycling bin.
01:18 The other thing belongs in my collection.
01:20 I'll leave it to you guys to guess which one is which.
01:22 First, the figure comes in clear with a pamphlet.
01:24 The pamphlet is the same, just to show you that the instructions on Man-at-Arms are that you can remove his arms,
01:29 you remove his head, his torso, and his lower boots.
01:32 Yes. That's going to go right into the recycling bin.
01:36 I missed it only by a few inches. I'm going to put that in the recycling bin right after this review.
01:40 I think honestly that's a waste of paper.
01:42 And I think honestly, not that there's a lot of money that goes into making those little tiny pamphlets,
01:47 but I feel like the plastic or the material used at least to produce those little paper inserts
01:51 could be dedicated to something else.
01:53 I don't even know what that other something else would be.
01:55 The figure at least comes in clear with this mini comic.
01:58 Now, we've already looked at this comic already two times before.
02:00 I mean, it does have a little fray at the bottom of it, but not all that bad.
02:04 Not as bad as the one that we got in clear with Spikeor.
02:07 Speaking of Spikeor, featured on the back are advertisements for Squeeze, Snakeman Infiltrator, Serpent Claw Man-at-Arms, and Spikeor.
02:14 The only figure based on the review now where we are at Man-at-Arms,
02:17 the only one we still have yet to look at is Snakeman Infiltrator, which we will be looking at in an upcoming review.
02:22 Quickly looking through the pamphlet here, it's not really a pamphlet.
02:25 It might as well be a pamphlet. It's only six pages in length,
02:28 but at least it has word bubbles so I know exactly what's happening inside.
02:31 I'm not having just to look at the image and guess, "Hey, what's going on here with Man-at-Arms?
02:35 Is he...?" Well, we already know he's saving somebody.
02:37 I mean, I can deduce that from the images alone,
02:39 but always these word bubbles come in handy to know exactly what they're actually saying to one another.
02:44 But it's only six pages, so again, it might as well just be a pamphlet.
02:47 But I always do hold on to these. They will be going into a little baggie.
02:50 You can't see it right now, but I've got a little Ziploc bag to the side
02:53 that I keep all my little mini-comics inside.
02:55 Even if I have more than one of these, I always like to hold on to all my mini-comics.
02:59 I will also as well be holding on to the next accessories.
03:01 The figure comes included with his mace.
03:03 I will say I'm a little bummed by the idea that now this figure is based on the original 2000X Man-at-Arms.
03:09 The Serpent Claw Man-at-Arms would have had something similar to this of a mace,
03:13 except the difference with the original 2000X Man-at-Arms is it would have also had a little plastic threading here,
03:19 and on the end of it would have basically been a claw piece.
03:22 Now, they've only kind of just cheapened out a little bit by giving us solely just the mace,
03:26 and I kind of wish that they could have spent the extra money.
03:28 Not that that would have been the extra wasted money that they spent on the pamphlet,
03:31 but if they had only just added the little bit of, again, it basically was like a green line that ran from this,
03:37 and there was a little claw piece that was on the end of it,
03:39 and he would almost use it in a way like a mace or kind of a whip.
03:42 Unfortunately, you only get just the mace alone.
03:44 The mace is molded nicely, though, in a dark kind of a bluish gunmetal gray,
03:48 and this can be held in either one of his hands, in fact.
03:51 The figure, as well, comes also included, living up to the namesake, the Serpent Claw.
03:55 The neat thing about the Serpent Claw is, first, that you can detach it,
03:58 and the second is that you can actually take the claw and you move it around.
04:01 There is, of course, that little silver pin that's in the middle that allows the claw to move around.
04:06 I mean, I will always kind of really have it more in a perfect kind of X shape,
04:10 but if you want to have it—oops, not dropping it—
04:12 if you wanted to have it a little bit closer together, you can also do that, as well.
04:15 And that just, again, clips inside.
04:17 There's a little hole on the end of it, and that just plugs in place like this.
04:20 Now, this would fit onto, for all intents and purposes, either one of Man-at-Arms' arms.
04:24 Unfortunately, though, because he has the guard here on the one side of his body,
04:27 it means he really only has the choice, unless you really did want to remove this.
04:31 I'm going to just decide instead to have it attached onto his arm.
04:34 I mean, literally, it's just a case—he's going to take his arm and just slide it inside the cavity of the Serpent Claw
04:39 and just—again, it doesn't really so much clip in place, it more so is just friction in place.
04:44 But again, it's a great way of displaying with the figure.
04:46 The only thing about it, though, is if you don't have it all the way in there—
04:49 I mean, there really isn't an option, like, for example, if they had made a peg on the inside, for example,
04:54 and you would just remove Man-at-Arms' hand, but then you'd have to worry about losing Man-at-Arms' hand.
04:58 I guess it probably makes the most sense of having it attached this way.
05:00 You can also, as well, clip it onto the end of his hand, if you want to have the figure displayed like that,
05:05 but it kind of just looks like he's carrying around a caddy.
05:07 Yes, definitely makes a lot more sense being displayed with his hand inside.
05:11 One thing that certainly will make him a little bit more different than the original Man-at-Arms,
05:14 which, again, we'll just bring in right now—the color's, again, a lot more darker here for the Serpent Claw release of him—
05:19 bodies are going to be exactly the same.
05:21 The only thing that's actually really different between the two, if you look at them,
05:24 is while the shoulder armor is exactly the same, as well, it could be said, as well, I think it looks like—
05:29 yeah, the forearm guard is also exactly the same.
05:33 The only thing that they've actually done differently is, if you look at the torso armor,
05:37 with the original Man-at-Arms, it didn't have this, but with the Serpent Claw,
05:40 you'll notice that it has this additional frilling on the side.
05:43 Again, it's all been accomplished by molding this in this really nice, really nice, interesting gunmetal gray.
05:49 The thing also about this is it detaches the exact same way,
05:53 so if, for some reason, you didn't really like this armor on Man-at-Arms,
05:55 or if you wanted to swap things around, you could, I guess, for all intents and purposes,
05:59 just detach the armor by the clips on the sides, and you just swap the armors around if you wanted to.
06:03 Head sculpts, again, are going to be exactly the same because they're using the exact same mold.
06:07 I still made the joke in the original Man-at-Arms review that he looks like Burt Reynolds.
06:10 I still think, in a way, he looks like Burt Reynolds.
06:13 Like the original toy, though, Man-at-Arms has always had this weird thing
06:16 where you can kind of see, like, his face is molding into his head, or more into his helmet.
06:21 He doesn't have as much ears as he has sort of these cheek extensions that mold into the side of his helmet.
06:27 It always looks a little strange here on Man-at-Arms, but, man, that's a really classic-looking head sculpt either way.
06:32 Of course, the molding on the body is going to be the same,
06:34 other than just changing now the lighter green to more of a darker, kind of more teal color.
06:39 And what was before, again, the lower loincloth being in brown and a brighter blue,
06:43 he gets now a more darker brown and a darker blue for the belt and loincloth below.
06:48 This is still the same piece as before.
06:50 I think the original snake armor, snake claw, serpent claws.
06:54 I keep getting my snakes and serpents tied up.
06:57 But the original serpent claw Man-at-Arms from the 2000X series would have had more just a boot.
07:01 It wouldn't have actually been a boot guard over top of it.
07:03 But again, they're using the one from before with Man-at-Arms.
07:06 So again, a lot of the same mold is getting carried over, but at least we get ourselves a brand new torso piece.
07:10 I'm really liking the look of that.
07:12 I think also as well the original serpent claw Man-at-Arms.
07:15 I don't want to keep saying snake.
07:16 Serpent claw Man-at-Arms also would have had this painted in blue.
07:19 So they've kind of cheapened a bit by not actually molding it.
07:21 But if you wanted to base this more on the original classic toy line,
07:24 the original classic toy line probably would have not also painted that in blue.
07:27 So they probably followed suit with that.
07:29 For the articulation on Man-at-Arms, it's going to be exactly the same as the one before.
07:33 So the head's going to be on ball joint.
07:34 You can rotate it all the way around.
07:35 Even though he really does have this mouth guard in front of him,
07:38 it doesn't limit it on the articulation for the figure.
07:41 So you can easily move the head around. No problems there.
07:43 Rotating the arms is also something that's easy to do.
07:45 Although the only thing about it though is when you rotate it too far,
07:48 this has happened to me several times.
07:50 Not that I'm really going to be rotating the arms around anyways.
07:53 But if you rotate them all the way,
07:55 it seems to be also something that pops the arms out of the sockets of the shoulders.
07:59 It didn't happen there, but it happened at least two times before when I was trying to...
08:03 Yeah, see, it just did that as well.
08:04 So yeah, you may not want to rotate it all the way around.
08:06 Just know that if you do, it's easy to plug it back into place.
08:10 While the figure doesn't have any elbow, or what I shouldn't say, any bicep swivel,
08:14 he has it at least in the elbow.
08:15 So you can rotate the arms all the way around.
08:17 You can hinge them back and forth there.
08:19 And you can also as well rotate the hands.
08:21 That's the same on this side,
08:22 although most of it is covered by shoulder armor and forearm armor.
08:25 So it's gonna be a little harder to kind of get things in there.
08:27 And of course, as you're moving the arms,
08:29 this is always something on the original figure as well was prone to happening.
08:32 This always moves around and shifts too loosely.
08:35 And unfortunately, if you look at the bottom of this,
08:38 the original Man-at-Arms also had this problem as well.
08:40 By not adding a secondary clip right here,
08:43 it doesn't allow you to bring this any tighter than what it is.
08:46 Because there is actually enough space really
08:48 that they could have put a clip, a secondary clip right there,
08:50 and made this then a little more tighter than what it is right now.
08:54 Figure has a swivel in his waist.
08:57 Can't quite get that out.
08:58 It's squeaky as it always seems to be the case.
09:00 I think when we also looked at, was it squeeze?
09:02 Squeeze also had that same thing too.
09:03 A really squeaky torso.
09:05 Legs do split out.
09:06 They're on ball joints.
09:07 But you can take those legs and move them forward, move them back.
09:09 There's a hinge on the knee that allows as well the lower leg to rotate.
09:12 An up and down hinge on the ankle,
09:14 which also allows the ankle to pivot, tilt,
09:16 move back and forth this way as well.
09:18 At the end of the day, it's still really just a Man-at-Arms clone,
09:22 using still the same mold as what we got before.
09:24 But you know, again, I'm okay with that.
09:26 Sometimes molds, I mean, obviously when you look at a mold like this,
09:29 if they had not released them,
09:31 I mean, obviously I think you want to get the most mileage out of the mold.
09:33 Any company is going to really want to do that.
09:35 At least you can make the argument, the valid argument,
09:37 I feel that we did get ourselves a 2000X.
09:39 That Man-at-Arms technically was just a cheap way for Mattel at that point
09:43 just to use the mold again.
09:44 And I guess for that,
09:45 we're getting kind of a throwback to that original toy.
09:49 What was what, like 20 years ago? 20 years ago?
09:51 We're getting a throwback to that original toy,
09:53 which essentially is just a remold of that original Man-at-Arms.
09:56 I like the color scheme on this guy.
09:58 The darker colors of that kind of teal color
10:00 instead of actually having like the yellows and the greens
10:02 that he would have had on the original traditional toy.
10:04 I really like the way it's now been handled on the newer one here.
10:07 Now, I'm always still going to be more interested, I think, to have,
10:10 like if you were just to collect one Man-at-Arms,
10:12 I would always push you more in the direction
10:14 of getting the vintage-looking toy colors.
10:16 But I got to say, there's something to be said
10:17 about the darker color scheme that we get here from Man-at-Arms.
10:20 Not to mention as well that we do get ourselves as well
10:22 the serpent claw attachment.
10:24 Still though, I'm a bit bummed by the fact
10:26 that they didn't actually upgrade the mace
10:28 to look like the original 2000X serpent claw Man-at-Arms.
10:30 Because again, if you had that original toy,
10:32 it would have had like a little plastic,
10:34 like a little string here that would have attached onto an end of a claw.
10:37 And he would have also used it as well for a whip.
10:39 Don't get that this time around,
10:40 but at least we get ourselves a rather interesting way
10:42 to remold a Man-at-Arms.
10:44 Which again, happens to be just a throwback
10:46 to a reused mold of a Man-at-Arms we got before.
10:49 Actually, upon closer inspection,
10:52 the armor isn't just different by having the frill on the side of it,
10:55 but the whole front of it is slightly varied too.
10:57 He has some additional bulk on the top
10:59 where his mouth guard or the face plate would be.
11:01 And he also has some additional wiring down below
11:03 that wasn't on the original Origins Man-at-Arms.
11:05 What's rather interesting though, is in a way,
11:08 this is a way for Mattel to use the mold again
11:10 from the original Origins Man-at-Arms.
11:12 But because we're also getting this particular armor,
11:14 I wonder if this is also a tease
11:16 for what we may be getting with the 2000X release of Man-at-Arms.
11:19 Because of course, you would imagine that the body
11:21 would have to be the same that they're going to be using.
11:23 And now that we've got ourselves a brand new armor piece,
11:25 I'm sure at some point, dot, dot, dot,
11:27 we are probably going to be getting ourselves a 2000X Man-at-Arms
11:29 to go along with the other 2000X figures
11:31 that we've gotten so far from Mattel.
11:33 Now this one does carry over the other claw attachment
11:36 that came included with the original 2000X Man-at-Arms.
11:38 The serpent claw is a nice touch.
11:40 Although I wish they had gone the full way
11:42 of actually including as well that kind of additional whip mace
11:45 that he had on the original toy.
11:46 It's kind of hard for me to describe it,
11:48 but just picture the mace and then it has like a green line
11:50 that extends out from that, and there's a little claw piece
11:52 that goes on the end of that.
11:54 It's probably better, in fact, just to look it up.
11:56 Just Google 2000X Serpent Claw Man-at-Arms,
11:59 and you'll kind of see for yourself what I was trying my best
12:01 and probably failing at describing in this review.
12:04 But I wish that we could have also got that included as well.
12:07 Because of course, if that's going to be a nod
12:08 to the 2000X Serpent Claw Man-at-Arms,
12:10 then I wish that Mattel would have gone the full way
12:12 of actually giving him all the accessories
12:14 that that original figure would have had as well.
12:16 What do you guys think though of Serpent Claw Man-at-Arms?
12:18 Do you think there's enough changes made,
12:20 at least not only just cosmetically,
12:21 but also with the brand new molding for the armor
12:23 that justifies the worth picking this guy up
12:25 and adding it to your collection?
12:27 Also as well, let me know if you had the original
12:28 2000X Serpent Claw Man-at-Arms.
12:31 Also as well, if you guys enjoyed this video,
12:32 I want to hit it with a like.
12:33 If you guys are loving the content you guys are seeing,
12:35 and would certainly like to stick around for more,
12:37 I have one more figure to review.
12:39 And of course, that will be coming up in an upcoming review.
12:41 The key to making sure that you're not missing out
12:42 on anything that's Master Universe or otherwise,
12:44 is if you make sure you hit that subscribe button down below,
12:47 and you're also as well turning on the bell notification.
12:49 Of course, as always guys as well, thanks for watching.
12:51 See you guys next time.
