  • last year
In his meeting with the members of the Filipino community in Honolulu on Nov. 18, President Marcos said Hawaii holds a very special place in his heart, citing the "wonderful experiences" they had there.

"The people we owe a debt of gratitude that we will never be able to repay."

This was how President Marcos described the Filipino-Americans in Hawaii as he looked back and thanked them for keeping his family "alive" during their exile there. (Video Courtesy of RTVM)

00:00 And the Filipino-Americans in Hawaii hold a very special place in my heart as for all
00:07 the wonderful experiences that we had here with our Filipino compatriots.
00:15 These are the people that kept us alive for six years.
00:21 [Applause]
00:24 We landed here in Honolulu with nothing. With nothing.
00:31 My family was flown from Malacanang Palace to Hickam Air Force Base.
00:39 And when we finally moved to Makiki Heights, we had nothing with us.
00:44 They kept everything to inspect everything.
00:48 These are the people who kept body and soul together of the Marcos family.
00:53 Even our clothes were given to us. They fed us.
00:59 They even brought the appliances to Makiki.
01:03 And when we were sad, they were the ones who made us happy.
01:08 If not for you, I think the Marcos family would have been gone.
01:12 I will never forget it.
01:14 My father is gone.
01:17 But when my mother found out that I was coming to Honolulu,
01:20 he said, "You make sure that you go back to all of those people
01:25 who went out of their way to keep us comfortable,
01:29 to keep us alive, literally alive."
01:32 And that is something that I will carry in my heart,
01:37 that the Marcos family will carry in my heart.
01:39 [ Silence ]
