A modified 1949 Mercury engaged in a drag race at the Great Lakes Drag-A-Way veered out of control, flew over a guard rail and killed Jason Benton, a photographer who was filming the event at the side of the track. Benton was from Grand Rapids, MI, United States.

Video coverage taken by spectators in the grandstands shows the blue vehicle rolling and crashing at speed, then disintegrating into a flaming wreckage and coming down on top of the victim. The driver walked away from the charred remains of the car after it rolled to a stop.

Authorities at the race track confirmed that the photographer had the proper credentials to be filming from the location where he was hit by the racing car. According to Sgt. John Schwarz of the Kenosha County Sheriff's Department, who investigated the accident, "With the limited information we have at this point, it doesn't appear that there was wrongdoing on anyone's part."
