00:00 [ Background noise ]
00:22 >> We good?
00:22 >> We're good.
00:23 >> Tom gave me a point, he used the phrase,
00:25 his job was to put the world on notice.
00:27 Is that what you want Gabe and all these newcomers to do?
00:31 >> Yeah, I mean I kind of like that, I kind of like that.
00:34 Put them on notice, that's right.
00:36 And score a lot of points.
00:39 Convert when you get an opportunity.
00:42 He converted when he had an opportunity.
00:43 That's probably the feature match.
00:46 I mean, you know, Ayala and I know they
00:51 like their 25 pounder, but you know, he did a good job.
00:56 Debut, now we build on it.
00:58 >> I think you had like four guys,
01:00 they said they had first victory here.
01:02 I think two of those guys had come back from,
01:04 actually they were down.
01:05 What do you want them to build off of this first time experience?
01:08 >> I think that Caliendo made some really good adjustments
01:12 during the match, that's important.
01:14 When you're in a fire fight like that, you got to pick
01:18 up certain things that you're feeling and then you got
01:23 to take action to make sure that you're not going
01:25 down the same path.
01:26 In that head outside single, we were getting caught
01:28 down on the mat with that.
01:29 It's got to be quick finish or stay on your feet
01:32 or better yet, don't go there.
01:33 And you know, he was on his feet a couple times,
01:36 head outside, popped him up in the air, scored,
01:39 made good adjustments there.
01:42 And that's why you're able to dig yourself out of a six
01:45 to one hole or a six to two hole.
01:47 So, hey, put that behind us now.
01:52 Their debut wins, put it behind us now.
01:55 We're going forward, we got a week from today.
01:57 We're in Ames, Iowa.
01:58 This team came in and if you were going to say who won
02:06 like what they were trying to do and dictate,
02:11 overall Oregon State, they dictated more than we did.
02:16 I mean, they were strategic, they were--
02:18 they slowed things down where they probably knew they had to.
02:25 And we didn't pick up on it in some instances
02:28 and it caught us and bit us big.
02:29 So, we have to dictate, that's my point.
02:38 >> You talked about Kalia and those adjustments.
02:40 I think the team in the matches that you won had a 13
02:43 to one takedown advantage in the third.
02:45 What does that mean for them, you know,
02:50 to be able to close the way they did in the matches they won?
02:53 >> I think three-point takedowns are a paradise for a guy
02:57 who starts to break it open
02:59 and there's bonus point implications.
03:02 Bonus points come quick.
03:03 It can be seven, four and all of a sudden two takedowns,
03:06 it's a major decision.
03:07 I mean, boom, boom, just like that.
03:09 You know, if you got writing time
03:12 and you're doing all those things that are adding up.
03:15 And I think Teske had a major decision,
03:18 I don't think he realized it.
03:19 Even when he gave up the takedown in the third
03:22 when he got his ankles caught together, got to realize it,
03:26 you got to maybe hustle a little bit more or a tech fall.
03:28 You know, a tech fall there.
03:30 Because those three-point takedowns, man,
03:33 do they put those points up on that board quick.
03:35 >> How good is it to get a test like this
03:40 against a good Oregon State team?
03:41 >> Good test?
03:42 Well, I give them kudos.
03:47 I give Pendleton kudos.
03:48 He's a professional.
03:49 He's no slouch.
03:51 He's a worthy opponent.
03:52 He comes from a place where he is --
03:57 I mean, he's not going to roll over
04:00 and let you tickle his belly.
04:01 I've known him as a competitor a long time, and I knew
04:08 that we had to be ready coming in here.
04:09 >> Victor Voinovich, you mentioned wanting
04:12 to see a little bit more pop out of those first three periods,
04:14 kind of there, but how good is it to get that last takedown?
04:17 >> The pop is like the finish in quick part probably.
04:20 We were in, and it was like that guy, you know,
04:24 he was a guy where he would back to the edge.
04:26 He would have your elbows, and he'd either duck you,
04:27 or he would just hang and frustrate.
04:29 He tied up our elbows a lot.
04:31 And then when we're in, it was the same thing.
04:34 You know, shin whizzers, splits, flexibility,
04:38 keep dragging you out to deeper water, keep slowing it down.
04:43 And you have to have quick finishes there.
04:45 And Teske, credit Teske because, you know,
04:49 when he got rolling, they were quick finishes.
04:51 And that guy's best position, Teske's best guy,
04:54 guy's best position was a bottom position.
04:58 That's where he was most dangerous.
04:59 And so we just cut him, start cutting him loose.
05:02 Very smart adjustment there as well at 33.
05:06 So we did make some good adjustments.
05:08 Hey, I'm pissed off right now,
05:10 but it's pretty much probably more my nature than anything.
05:13 The thing that probably really irks me is
05:17 that we let them dictate.
05:19 And we have to dictate.
05:20 This is a sport that it's very, very reflective.
05:24 Your results are very reflective in how you dictate.
05:27 So we're getting ready to go.
05:28 You got Teske here.
05:29 Teske, we're having team meeting up there.
05:31 So when you're done, you don't have to hurry up,
05:33 but you enjoy the media here a bit.
05:34 All right.
05:35 Thanks a lot.
05:36 >> Thanks, Doug.
05:36 Thanks, Doug.
