Jack Kelly's Fatal Crash @ Gardena Stadium 1964

  • last year
Driver Jack Kelly - whose actual name was John Henry Brennan, was born in Connecticut in 1926. He served on the USS Topeka beginning on 23 December 1944. This light cruiser, CL-67, served in the Pacific and near the Philippine Islands toward the end of World War II, receiving two battle stars.

Kelly was a resident of Anaheim, California. He was employed as an auto mechanic in Fullerton. Jack was married to Sharon B. (Berdine?) Brennan, née Shirley - and on 10 March 1964 the couple welcome the birth of their son, Jack K. Brennan.

Five days later - on Sunday, 15 March - Kelly took part in a meeting held by the California Racing Association at the Gardena Speedway, which was at the time known as Western Speedway. On the first lap of the feature race around the 0.3-mile dirt oval Kelly's car #52 tangled with Les Crawford’s #42. Both machines hit the wall and flipped. Kelly was dead upon arrival at the Gardena Hospital.

John Brennan was thirty-seven years old. He is interred at the Good Shepherd Cemetery, Huntington Beach, California.
