00:01 Recently we drove the BMW iX and the BMW iX3.
00:06 I reckon BMW's EV game is actually not too bad, and today it's our turn to get behind
00:11 the wheel of this.
00:12 It is basically an electric version of the BMW 4 Series.
00:16 This competes with things like the Tesla Model 3, the Polestar 2, the EV6, it's in that kind
00:23 of segmentation.
00:26 Now this here is the entry level, it's called the eDrive 40 and it's priced at just under
00:30 $100,000.
00:31 There is a faster version of this available as well with all-wheel drive, this is just
00:36 the rear-wheel drive version.
00:37 Today we're going to do a detailed review of this car.

00:49 Let's talk exterior design.
00:50 So you've got 12 colours to pick from.
00:52 All but white is going to cost you between $2,000 and almost $4,000.
00:56 They are expensive colours.
00:58 One of those colours is also unique to the top specification version.
01:02 I actually quite like this colour, it's like a BMW's version of Audi's Nardo Grey.
01:07 Now, down the bottom here, let's start off with this grille.
01:10 I know that it's been a little bit controversial in terms of its appearance because it is kind
01:15 of enormous and stuff, but you get used to it I reckon and it kind of helps that you
01:19 have this registration plate on the front covering things up a little bit.
01:23 You do get these blue elements around the kidney grille and also this section here that
01:28 basically signifies that this is the full electric version of this vehicle.
01:32 Up the top here, that's all closed off.
01:33 Your main cooling elements are down the bottom, then they have a radar built into there as
01:37 well.
01:38 So, look, I don't know, let me know what you think in the comments section below.
01:40 Are you getting used to this big old grille here or do you think that they need to go
01:44 back to, you know, being a little bit more traditional in terms of their design?
01:48 Over on the headlights, you have a set of full LED headlights.
01:52 Love this design too because they have that blue section nestled into there as well with
01:57 the LED daytime running light.
01:58 A little bit of a cooling vent or an aero vent of some description on the side there.
02:03 Whip around to the side here, you've got yourself a set of 19-inch alloy wheels.
02:08 Now, this car in Australia comes with the M Sport package, which means it has the M
02:14 appearance.
02:15 So, you can see the red brake calipers there.
02:17 You've also got this pretty cool looking alloy wheel as well with the brushed chrome look
02:21 on the outside and then the darker look on the inside there.
02:25 More of that blue element in the centre too.
02:27 Now, this is a fairly low profile tyre, so I'll be keen to see how this drives.
02:31 This comes with adaptive damping, so hopefully they've figured out a way of making this actually
02:36 ride nicely if you're not going to go for a punt.
02:39 Down the side here, if you saw our review of the X3 M40i, if you didn't, you can click

02:44 There was a little scalloped section that we didn't know what it did and it turns out
02:48 it's actually for the carpet light that gets projected out onto the pavement when you do
02:53 come to the car.
02:54 So, that is what that little section is, little LEDs nestled in there.
02:59 Now, up the top here, you have body colour on the top of that wing mirror, a bit of camera
03:03 built into there and also an indicator built into there as well.
03:07 I want to talk about these for a second.
03:08 So, I don't know, they've tried to kind of go down the design path of the iX with those
03:13 inbuilt door handles.
03:15 The problem with this is when the car is on a bit of an angle, when you go to open the
03:18 door, it's really quite hard to grip this.
03:21 Your fingers just sort of slide out of it, so it's not the best design in the world and
03:25 I think they probably should have just kept it the way that it was instead of trying to
03:29 be all aerodynamic and cool with it.
03:31 It just doesn't really work all that well in my opinion.
03:34 You've got a moonroof up the top here.
03:36 Come around to the back of the car.
03:38 So, there's some cool things in the back here.
03:40 First, have a look at that shark fin aerial.
03:42 It is very aero.
03:43 It looks very nice and sleek.
03:45 Over here, you've got eDrive40.
03:47 That signifies that this is obviously the electric drive version of the 4 Series.
03:52 i4 on this side and then you have the camera built into the BMW logo just there.
03:57 A little bit more blue down the bottom as well where you would have normally found the
04:01 exhaust outlets.
04:02 Now, let me know what you think about the design of the i4 in the comments section below.

04:14 So, we're in the i4.
04:15 We'll start off with the key.
04:17 You have unlock, lock, boot.
04:21 Down here, you've got some M colours and then you have those metallic bits on the side as
04:26 well.
04:27 This is a proximity sensing key, so you can leave that in your pocket.
04:29 Then when you're inside, you have a very blue start button.
04:32 Have a look at this interior and this design.
04:35 So, we first encountered these screens in the new BMW iX and I was a big fan of this
04:40 because it is BMW's all-new infotainment system.
04:43 So, it's a huge step forward and it looks so high-end in here compared to just a regular
04:48 4 Series.
04:49 Then, they sort of follow it up with these sort of tech-savvy materials.
04:55 You know, it's not a wood grain, it's not piano black.
04:57 It's just sort of something a little bit different and all this stuff is cold to the touch.
05:01 So, I think it is displayed very nicely and the interior feels nice and premium, especially
05:06 when you're paying that $100,000 mark for the car.
05:09 Now, what about your touch points?
05:10 So, that is not too bad in the centre there and a little bit firm on the door.
05:15 How firm are they?
05:16 Well, we've got our durometer, we've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.

05:25 Build quality.
05:26 Oh, that is solid as a rock.
05:30 And our door test.
05:34 That's good.
05:35 But have a look at this.
05:36 Isn't that weird?
05:37 The window goes like half the way down.
05:39 Normally, with these pillar-less windows, they sort of just crack a little bit, but
05:43 that goes half the way down when it closes.
05:45 So, interesting stuff.
05:46 So, when I was growing up, I had a 15-inch monitor and I thought it was the ducks' nuts.
05:51 But did I think I would have a 14.9-inch infotainment display in a car?
05:58 So, this is really impressive.
06:00 When it comes to infotainment systems in cars, BMW is one of the leaders and this latest
06:05 version of their operating system, OS 8, I think just takes it up to another level entirely.
06:09 So, you've got a touchscreen for this.
06:12 You can scroll.
06:13 You've also got the iDrive controller down here.
06:15 So, this is pretty much as good as it gets.
06:18 Now, in terms of the features that you have in here, BMW has moved a lot of the buttons
06:23 that they used to nestle down the bottom here all up into this display.
06:26 So, right now, if you're doing a change of climate controls, it's done here and here,
06:30 and then you have a further climate menu as well.
06:33 And then, if you want to access all of your other functions, it's all done through these
06:36 tabs.
06:37 Now, the tabs are interesting because you can configure whatever you want on here using
06:41 widgets.
06:42 It shows you the weather.
06:43 Yes, it's freezing wet.
06:45 Just terrible outside at the moment.
06:47 Car information.
06:48 It's got a personal assistant, which is used for, you know, giving commands to the car
06:52 if you don't have a smartphone paired.
06:54 And it's simple stuff like, you know, make it quieter, louder, that sort of thing.
06:58 And then you have in-built satellite navigation as well.
07:01 On the audio front, you have AM/FM/DAB digital radio, and that's plumbed through a 10-speaker
07:07 sound system.
07:08 There is an optional Harman Kardon sound system available as well.
07:11 And I will call out at this point too that some of the stuff that I talk about now may
07:14 not be standard with the semiconductor issues.
07:17 They're pulling things left, right and centre.
07:19 So if you are buying one of these, just make sure you check what's standard.
07:22 Some of the stuff that I talk about today may not come with the car.
07:26 Smartphone mirroring comes in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
07:29 Now, Apple CarPlay wireless.
07:31 Have a look at this.
07:32 It is a full-screen integration, and then it's nice and snappy as you move through it
07:39 as well.
07:40 And it also has a wireless phone charger, which means you're not going to be stranded
07:43 with no battery given how much wireless Apple CarPlay consumes when it's running.
07:48 And this is what Android Auto looks like.
07:50 This is a wired system, so full-screen again.
07:53 Love that integration.
07:54 And your maps go full-screen as well, so pretty impressive setup there.
07:59 Just the whole infotainment system in general I think is pretty cool.
08:01 Ahead of the driver, you have another display.
08:03 It's a little over 12 inches in size.
08:05 Now, this one can also be configured in a number of ways, and it's all driven here on
08:10 the steering wheel.
08:11 So you can change the layout and exactly what appears on the screen ahead of you.
08:15 Very easy to use, and I don't know, again, I just think this is one of the coolest systems
08:20 in the business.
08:21 They've really just mastered the art of simplicity and just making it work.
08:24 What's going on on the safety front?
08:25 Well, you've got AEB that works forwards and reverse.
08:28 You've got an auto-dimming rear vision mirror, blind spot monitoring built into the wing
08:32 mirror, lane departure warning, and a lane-keeping assistant.
08:35 Also has a semi-autonomous steering function.
08:37 Works okay.
08:38 It's not sort of too bad.
08:40 And then on the parking front, you have both front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
08:44 I'll give you a sticky peek at that one.
08:46 So you can activate the camera any time while you're driving.
08:48 So this is the front view.
08:49 The good thing about this is you can save points.
08:53 They're geocached, so it means at this point, if I do want this to come on every single
08:57 time I reach here, I can just save that, which I think is a pretty clever feature.
09:00 But then when you do hit the parking button or you put it into reverse, you'll get these
09:03 cameras come up as well.
09:04 So that's your front view.
09:05 You can then select a back view.
09:07 You've got a 360 view there and then also side views as well.
09:11 Quality is okay.
09:12 Like I can clearly see what's written there, but you can see at those top sections, it
09:15 kind of just loses a lot of its clarity.
09:18 You then have a 3D view that you can play around with and move around.
09:22 Our suitcase looks like a pancake actually in the back there.
09:25 So I promise it's not a pancake.
09:28 And then also finally, you have the car wash view.
09:30 I find this one interesting because when you do go to a car wash, you don't want to curb
09:34 your wheels trying to get into it.
09:35 So this basically allows you to follow the contours of the car wash and then it will
09:40 direct you exactly where you need to go.
09:42 So pretty handy feature there.
09:43 Finally, you have a park assistant, which is a semi-autonomous parking function and
09:48 then a reverse assistant as well.
09:50 That remembers your last 50 metres worth of travel.

09:58 Let's talk about practicality and we will start with your connectivity.
10:02 So you have one USB-A port just here, a 12 volt outlet here.
10:06 In the centre console, you have a USB-C port and you have a wireless phone charger as well.
10:12 Terms of storing your phone, it lives on the wireless phone charger if you need to.
10:15 It fits my big phone, which is good news.
10:17 Phone also fits here in the cup holders and then centre console.
10:21 You can stick your phone in there if you want to as well.
10:24 What about our cups?
10:25 Well, coffee cup, you will be pleased to hear, fits beautifully into there.
10:30 It can also fit our bottle.
10:33 Big bottle, doesn't fit into there.
10:37 Fits into the door, which is good, which means our small bottle should fit in the door as
10:41 well.
10:42 Yes, win-win.
10:43 Other storage, you have a little holder here for keys and other bits and pieces.
10:47 Wow, that goes like all the way in to Never Never Land.
10:51 That's hilarious.
10:53 Centre console, a little bit of storage in there and finally, you have a glove box over
10:58 here that is okay sized.
11:01 Now what about your comfort?
11:02 So you have dual zone automatic climate control.
11:04 You set those zones just here.
11:07 You'll notice there is no seat heating.
11:09 That is optional.
11:11 Bizarrely and disappointingly, in terms of the seats themselves, this car has electrically
11:16 adjustable seats so you can go forwards, backwards, you can put your back, forwards, backwards,
11:22 you can adjust your side bolsters.
11:25 Then you have manual adjustment here for this front portion.
11:27 You also have memory for the driver's seat as well.
11:31 Seats themselves, they're pretty comfy.
11:34 They've got this sort of pretty basic looking material.
11:36 They don't really have any perforations because you don't have that sort of seat cooling mechanism
11:41 in there but you've got a nice bolster on them.
11:43 They hug you in well.
11:44 Then the steering wheel offers both manual tilt and reach adjustment.
11:49 On our reach test, this stuff is easier to reach but you do need to lean a little bit
11:52 just to get to the edges of this screen.
11:55 The second row, not a great deal of room back here.
11:58 So knee room is very cramped, toe room very cramped, head room pretty cramped as well.
12:05 So I was hoping for a bit more space back here given the other competitors in this segment
12:09 have a whole lot more leg room here in the second row.
12:12 And look, I know that this was an ice platform but have a look at this, that hump is kind
12:17 of unnecessary when you develop an EV from the ground up.
12:21 You obviously haven't done that here and you get these inherent flow issues from your internal
12:25 combustion platform.
12:27 But you do get air vents back here.
12:29 You've got a third zone of climate control in this car.
12:31 You also have two USB-C ports.
12:33 These map pockets, ISOFIX on the outboard seats with three top tethers.
12:38 Center armrest here with two cup holders.
12:40 Pop that in, there we go.
12:43 Little rubber teeth in there.
12:45 Fits inside the door as well which is good news.
12:49 Now what about our window test?
12:51 Let's see what happens here.
12:52 I'm curious to see whether that will actually go down.
12:55 No, that's sort of like halfway down pretty much.
12:57 It's pretty disappointing I reckon.
12:59 Yeah, okay.
13:01 But auto up and down on the windows.
13:03 Let's talk cargo capacity.
13:05 Open this up so it's a power tailgate.
13:08 You've got just under 500 litres of cargo capacity here in its standard form.
13:12 It's not a bad boot but these bits here just taper in right at the back there.
13:16 So you are sort of robbed of a little bit of width there but you do get these storage
13:20 bits off to the side and you also get underfloor storage as well.
13:23 This is where you'll find your tyre sealant.
13:25 This is also where you can pop your cables and stuff.
13:28 Yes, there is no storage under the bonnet though.
13:30 It is just all of the electrical components unfortunately.
13:32 So how does it go with our bags in here?
13:35 Let's give that a shot.
13:36 So that's one bag and that's our other bag.
13:39 So yeah, look, it's not too bad.
13:40 It's not the biggest space in the world but it will achieve the basics of what a boot
13:44 needs to achieve.
13:45 Over on the side here you've got a 12 volt outlet.
13:48 You also have a hook here and then some hooks down the front.
13:51 Now if you do want to expand this space you can drop the second row.
13:54 There is no release lever here.
13:55 You've got to work your way around the car to drop these down but when you drop the second
14:00 row the space expands to just under 1300 litres.
14:05 Now before we go for a drive as the sun finally decides to grace us, let's talk about charging.
14:10 So you have two charging options, AC and DC.
14:13 The battery pack is a little over 80 kilowatt hours.
14:16 On the AC front you can charge using three phase up to 11 kilowatts.
14:20 DC on the other hand is charging at around 200 kilowatts with an average of 120 kilowatts.
14:27 So charging specs are pretty good there.
14:29 It is about where you expect a vehicle like this to be in the segment and it means you
14:32 have flexible charging if you just want to do AC and then faster charging if you want
14:36 to do DC as well.
14:41 So we've just hit the road in the i4.
14:43 Before I get cracking it is so wet outside today.
14:46 It's cold, it's miserable so I'm not going to be able to do anything too crazy so hopefully
14:51 I'll be able to give you as much information as I can about the car but we won't be able
14:55 to do anything too fast in terms of driving.
14:57 Now powering this it's a single electric motor for the entry level version of the i4 and
15:02 being a BMW it is mounted to the rear axle so you get that rear wheel drive feel behind
15:07 the wheel.
15:08 I guess that's important for the BMW brand.
15:10 You don't really want it to be something like Polestar where they use front wheel drive
15:13 for their single motor variant.
15:15 This is very much a BMW feeling vehicle.
15:17 Now what does all that mean?
15:18 Well 250 kilowatts of power is how much power you can get out of this.
15:24 430 Newton meters of torque so it's a pretty decent heft there and it's enough to get this
15:29 thing up and moving and make it feel engaging behind the wheel.
15:32 It does all the great EV stuff.
15:33 If you plant the throttle it pins you back in the seat.
15:36 It even has what BMW calls iconic sounds so depending on the drive mode that you're in
15:42 it will then deliver different sort of noises inside the cabin.
15:46 They did boast that Hans Zimmer was the composer behind the sound so very fancy by the sounds
15:53 of it.
15:54 Yeah as you go through the drive modes there it changes in terms of the noise.
15:57 Now in terms of your drive modes you have Sport, Comfort, Eco, Pro.
16:00 With Sport you can also do an individual configuration as well and tell the car exactly what you
16:06 want it to do and that gives you just a little bit more configurability there in terms of
16:10 the way that it feels behind the wheel.
16:11 Let's talk about range and that kind of thing.
16:13 So BMW claims a driving economy of between 16 to 20 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers.
16:20 Now I'm going to flick through here what we're currently achieving.
16:24 We're sitting on 25 and look it's probably not ideal to be showing you that figure simply
16:29 because of the weather today.
16:31 We had to change around our filming so we did some of the faster fun driving earlier
16:35 in the day and that's bumped that electricity use up.
16:39 But when it is sitting between 16 and 20 which is what I was experiencing before we got to
16:43 the proving ground here, that's actually a decent number and that means you're getting
16:46 a decent driving range.
16:48 So they claim over 500 kilometers WLTP.
16:50 WLTP is a bit nonsense in terms of realistic driving range but I would expect between sort
16:56 of 450 and 550 kilometers in terms of real driving range and that's pretty achievable
17:01 and pretty decent for a car in this segment.
17:03 And it also weighs in at around two tons which again is pretty good for a car in this segment.
17:08 When you go to an SUV they really just supersize their weight and it just becomes far too large.
17:13 The Tesla Model 3 for example is lighter than this but it is still nudging that two ton
17:18 mark anyway.
17:19 But to give you an idea, since this car was created in the BMW factory which was 3,400
17:24 kilometers ago, they've been logging the energy use and it's sitting at 18.2 so virtually
17:28 smack bang in the middle of that range and that is a really decent figure.
17:33 Now we'll dial this up to 130, the maximum legal speed here in Australia and see what
17:41 it's like on our sine waves.
17:43 This kind of simulates a country road and cars with poor body control almost leave the
17:49 ground here.
17:50 That is fantastic, really, really nice.
17:53 So BMW, whenever I drive one it always runs the risk of being way too firm because they
17:58 do dial a lot of sportiness into their tunes.
18:01 This on the other hand is fantastic, it has adaptive damping and it means that you're
18:05 able to customise that feel behind the wheel and give you the comfort when you need it
18:09 and then the sportiness when you need it.
18:10 And in the comfort mode this isn't too firm which is great news.
18:16 Okay let's put this into sport mode.
18:18 Now like I said it is very wet out here so I'm going to be a little gingerly compared
18:23 to what we normally do because I think we will be all over the shop.
18:28 And on the throttle, yeah that's nice.
18:34 We're actually here the other day in the Mercedes-Benz C300 and that was kind of all over the shop
18:39 with the tyres they had on it and it was wet as well.
18:42 This on the other hand, the tyres are fantastic, they're really holding on nicely to the road
18:46 even when it is completely sopping wet and we hit these wet patches it feels nice and
18:51 connected to the road.
18:52 I also like the steering feel too, they haven't numbed it out or removed all the feel from
18:57 it just because it's an electric car.
18:59 It kind of still feels just like a 4 Series behind the wheel which is pretty impressive
19:03 when you think about it.
19:04 It is hard to take a vehicle that they've honed and fine-tuned as an internal combustion
19:09 car to make it feel just as good as an electric
19:16 car.
19:17 Yeah I'm really liking this, very impressed by it.
19:20 The throttle response in Sport mode as well so when you do lean onto it, it doesn't sort
19:24 of punch you in the back, it's nice and smooth but the more you push onto the throttle, the
19:29 more torque it just continues delivering.
19:31 Let's roll onto our back straight here, kick that throttle.
19:35 It's moving along nice, I can hear those iconic sounds running in the background.
19:40 Thankfully you can switch those off.
19:43 Brake pedal feels good as well so even here in the wet it is holding on really nicely,
19:47 I wasn't expecting that.
19:48 What you can do as well is switch everything off and have some fun and I think that is
19:53 probably what tells you that this is a BMW.
19:57 It feels like a rear wheel drive 4 Series.
19:59 The fact they've been able to achieve that to the point where it can even do fun, drifty
20:03 things I think is testament to how much effort they've put into this.
20:09 The BMW has engineered that M feel behind the wheel despite the fact this only being
20:15 the entry level i4 model.
20:18 BMW claims a 0-100 time of 5.7 seconds, this is how it went up against our stopwatch.
20:30 I'm going to pop this back into comfort mode.
20:42 What's it like in terms of your day to day stuff?
20:44 So the turning circle is huge for some reason, it's over 12 metres and that means when you
20:48 are doing three point turns it takes a little bit to actually get this thing manoeuvred
20:53 which is really strange, I would have thought something this size would be easy to turn
20:58 and given it's not all wheel drive there's no real limitation on the turning radius.
21:01 Now what's our road noise like at 80, 100 k's an hour on a course chip road?
21:07 There is a bit of noise coming into the cabin, it's not the end of the world but this is
21:10 what you get when you take an internal combustion platform and add electric components.
21:14 So it's not terrible but it could be just a little bit better there in terms of tyre
21:18 noise.
21:19 In terms of visibility though you can see clearly down the front there, the wing mirrors
21:21 could be a little bit bigger but they give you reasonable vision down the side of the
21:25 car with a blind spot monitor built in.
21:27 Visibility out the back is pretty poor though, the envelope is very narrow there.
21:36 So the BMW i4, today's weather has been absolutely shocking but that's been fun to drive, I wasn't
21:43 expecting a rear wheel drive electric car to actually be entertaining on a wet road
21:47 because normally they are absolutely all over the place, especially on this surface.
21:51 So yeah big up for BMW in terms of making a sporty, engaging rear wheel drive electric
21:56 car.
21:57 In terms of the downsides though, look it's not very well packaged as an electric car
22:01 because they've taken an internal combustion platform and then turned it electric so there
22:05 are some limitations there in terms of what they can achieve.
22:07 It's also probably a little expensive as well, so $100,000, that's really in the ballpark
22:12 of a performance Tesla Model 3.
22:14 Even the fast stuff coming from Kia with the EV6, that is absolutely well and truly a competitor
22:19 to this.
