David Schwimmer Honors Matthew Perry With Favorite 'Friends' Moment
Transcript
00:00 David Schwimmer remembers Matthew Perry following his untimely death.
00:04 "We all felt kind of an instant chemistry going way back.
00:08 And then when we were shooting the pilot, I think that really solidified that chemistry."
00:14 The actor shared this snap from the set of Friends alongside a letter to his late friend.
00:20 Reading in part, "Maddie, thank you for 10 incredible years of laughter and creativity."
00:26 Going on to praise Matthew's impeccable comic timing and delivery.
00:30 "We'll hit all the maple candy stores on the way back.
00:33 And if they're closed, then maybe we'll tap a tree and make some ourselves."
00:37 [laughter]
00:39 "Does that room have a closet I can lock him in?"
00:42 You could take a straight line of dialogue and bend it to your will,
00:46 resulting in something so entirely original and unexpectedly funny, it still astonishes.
00:52 "They know you're the funny one, then I swoop in with some interesting conversation,
00:57 so they'll see that I'm the brilliant, brooding, sexy one."
01:00 [laughter]
01:04 "I thought I got to make the jokes."
01:06 [laughter]
01:08 David adds that Matthew had heart, which he was generous with,
01:11 and shared with the cast so they could create a family out of six strangers.
01:15 "Over the 10 years, obviously, we really grew close as a family.
01:19 And part of the reason was that that initial success of the show
01:24 was something that no one else could relate to or was going through except the other five actors."
01:30 David explains that the pic he shared is one of his favorite moments with Matthew
01:34 from their time on the hit '90s sitcom, a flashback scene from a Thanksgiving episode.
01:39 "God, your hair sure is different."
01:41 "Yeah, we were just talking about that.
01:43 Can't believe how stupid we used to look."
01:45 [laughter]
01:48 Now, David says, the photo makes him smile and grieve at the same time.
01:53 "I imagine you up there, somewhere in the same white suit, hands in your pockets, looking around.
01:58 Could there be any more clouds?"
02:01 A reference to Matthew's character Chandler's signature inflection.
02:05 "Could I be more sorry? Could you want her more? Could she be more out of my league?"
02:11 Matthew died at age 54 in an apparent drowning at his home in Los Angeles on October 28th.
02:17 And David's tribute comes after his fellow Friends cast members, Jennifer Aniston,
02:22 Matt LeBlanc and Courtney Cox, remembered Matthew with posts of their own.
02:26 "I think it was just magic was happening.
02:29 There was just the perfect casting and just sort of magic just all happened at once.
02:35 I knew it was going to be the happiest time of my life and it sort of was."
02:38 Shortly after news of his death broke, David, Courtney, Matt, Jen and Lisa Kudrow
02:43 released a joint statement, writing that they are so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew.
02:49 "We were more than just castmates. We are a family. There is so much to say.
02:54 But right now we're going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss."
