00:00 >> The car crash that took the
00:02 life of princess Diana is the
00:04 center of controversy as season
00:06 six of "The crown" drops today.
00:08 Welcome to "Access Hollywood"
00:09 from Universal Studios
00:10 Hollywood.
00:11 I'm Mario Lopez.
00:12 In the first four episodes,
00:13 explore the events surrounding
00:14 the death of princess Di back in
00:16 1997.
00:17 Elizabeth Debicki is getting
00:19 rave reviews right now for her
00:20 portrayal, but does the show's
00:22 depiction of Diana's death go
00:23 too far?
00:24 Elizabeth reveals just how
00:25 emotional it got recreating the
00:27 tragedy.
00:28 >> There were times where it
00:30 was really hard.
00:31 There were times where you just
00:32 come to work and you just think
00:33 it's too sad.
00:34 It's like too sad to do, but
00:36 it's your job.
00:37 >> Those critical scenes in
00:38 "The crown" depiction of Diana's
00:40 final moments including the
00:41 paparazzi car chase that led to
00:43 her death.
00:44 The cast and crew maintain they
00:45 handled the tragedy with
00:46 sensitivity and respect.
00:47 Bolstering that point, the
00:48 actual grizzly crash is not
00:49 shown.
00:50 However, we do see a harrowing
00:53 recreation of the events leading
00:54 up to it.
00:55 To get through filming the
00:57 tragic scenes, Elizabeth leaned
00:59 on her co-star who portrays
01:01 Diana's boyfriend, who was also
01:03 killed in the devastating wreck.
01:05 >> We just kind of really held
01:07 each other through it.
01:08 We were really determined that
01:09 even though we know where this
01:11 is going and it's heading
01:12 towards this horrific tragedy,
01:14 that we allow them to be
01:16 themselves.
01:17 >> The show's cast and crew
01:19 maintain they handled the
01:21 tragedy with sensitivity and
01:22 respect.
01:23 >> We just kind of really held
01:24 each other through it.
01:25 We were determined that even
01:26 though it's heading towards this
01:28 horrific tragedy, that we allow
01:29 them to be as fluid and human as
01:31 they can be just before that
01:33 happens.
01:34 >> While some of the most
01:35 indelible images of Diana's
01:36 death are reimagined with
01:37 incredible accuracy, much to the
01:39 shock of many viewers, Diana
01:40 returns in several scenes as a
01:41 ghost.
01:42 >> Thank you for how you were in
01:43 the hospital.
01:44 So raw, broken, and handsome.
01:47 I'll take that with me.
01:48 >> Paul, who is known for using
01:50 his connection to Diana for
01:51 personal gain, is among the
01:53 crown's most outspoken critics,
01:55 appearing this morning on
01:56 Britain's talk show "Lorraine."
01:57 >> I can't watch that.
01:58 It's too graphic.
01:59 >> It is.
02:00 >> It's too much.
02:01 And it will upset William and
02:02 Harry.
02:03 It will upset a lot of people
02:04 watching that.
02:05 >> In 2021, Paul told "Access"
02:07 how he rushed to be by Diana's
02:09 side at the hospital, despite
02:10 the fact that by then she had
02:11 already passed.
02:12 >> I took hold of her hand and
02:14 said, you can wake up now.
02:16 Wake up.
02:17 >> You're really special.
02:18 >> Although Elizabeth underwent
02:20 an intense 90s transformation
02:21 to portray Diana at the end of
02:22 her life, the rumor she was in
02:24 the makeup chair for 30 hours is
02:26 false.
02:27 >> I can barely sit down for 20
02:28 minutes.
02:29 >> No, it was very, very good
02:31 wigs, lots of different wigs,
02:33 and then tanning and very kind
02:35 of 90s makeup.
02:36 >> I just wanted us all to be
02:37 away when your father threw a
02:39 huge 50th birthday party, if you
02:40 know who.
02:41 >> The Aussie actress nails
02:43 Diana's mannerisms and style
02:44 down to the last detail.
02:46 Perhaps the most iconic Diana
02:47 moment was brought to life when
02:49 she was photographed on Dodie's
02:51 yacht off the coast of Portofino
02:53 pensively sitting on a diving
02:54 board just one week before her
02:55 death.
02:56 >> The person on our tails
02:57 constantly.
02:58 >> I have to say, that was a
02:59 very sad little, you know, like
03:00 trying to just find peace, but
03:02 you're still being kind of like
03:04 gazed at and captured by a lens.
03:06 >> By that point in the story,
03:07 that character is really
03:08 trapped.
03:09 >> I want to check this out.
03:11 The new season is getting all
03:13 kinds of great reviews, variety,
03:15 and it's a lot of fun.
03:16 >> And the show is reclaiming
03:18 its crown.
