00:18 So with that being said, I am Sean Ferrick for Trek Culture and here are ten more incredible
00:24 Star Trek concept designs you need to see.
00:28 Number ten, Picard's Lecture, Star Trek Picard.
00:31 There was originally going to be a scene in which Picard delivered a lecture to an assembled
00:36 group of delegates.
00:38 Now there was going to be beautiful artwork, there was going to be a holographic representation
00:41 of the Enterprise-E, there was going to be Commander Data in his Next Generation uniform.
00:46 Now unfortunately this scene didn't come to pass in season one, although there was a scene
00:51 quite like it in season two when he delivers his address in Starfleet Academy.
00:56 Picardist Laurent Ben-Mimon designed this room.
01:00 It was the Oxford Union.
01:02 Now that is a world famous debating society that Patrick Stewart himself has actually
01:08 already delivered an address at.
01:11 So what you would have had is Jean-Luc Picard in 2399 delivering an address to the Oxford
01:16 Union which would be a parallel to Sir Patrick Stewart delivering an address in 2013.
01:22 Now as I said we didn't get this scene even though you would have had all of these different
01:26 aliens including a Klingon in Discovery-style makeup and yes I can hear a very large portion
01:33 of the audience crying bitter, bitter tears as I say that.
01:38 You might be looking at me going "Oh Sean, any excuse for a cosplay?" and you would be
01:43 absolutely right.
01:44 But it is on theme.

02:49 NX-01 Star Trek Enterprise.
02:51 Now I know what you're thinking, you're like "we've seen the NX-01".
02:55 It was in quite a few episodes actually.
02:57 And we've also at this stage seen Doug Drexler's refit of the NX-01.
03:03 While it hasn't been in several episodes yet, it's literally had a model released
03:06 of it.
03:07 Sean, what are you on?
03:09 No I'm actually referring to the designs that John Eaves did when Star Trek Enterprise
03:15 or Enterprise as it was known then was just going into production.
03:18 Now Eaves of course he had worked on Star Trek First Contact, he had worked on Star
03:23 Trek Insurrection as well.
03:25 So he was no stranger to the series.
03:27 When he was brought on board, his designs, they were similar to what Doug Drexler eventually
03:33 ended up bringing to the show.
03:35 But you can see in them what would become inspirations for his take on the Enterprise
03:42 in Star Trek Discovery.
03:44 Although the NX-01 didn't unfortunately pan out for John Eaves, he did get one 701
03:51 which is a bit of a back of the net.
03:53 But if you look at these designs you can definitely see where the inspiration crossed over between
03:58 the two.
03:59 And you can still see the general shape that was going in, or would end up going in, to
04:04 the NX-01 as well.
04:06 So the idea is there.
04:07 The execution, obviously that never happened, but the idea is certainly there.
04:12 And I like it.
04:14 Number 8.
04:15 Starfleet uniforms, Star Trek Beyond.
04:17 If you look at the uniforms that we got in Star Trek Beyond, they're a little bit of
04:20 a development from 2009 and into darkness in that the collar goes slightly higher up
04:26 in the collar.
04:27 I have to say I do, I'm a big fan of these uniforms.
04:32 But they were not the initial plan for this film.
04:35 Costume designer Sonya Hayes designed something that was a little bit more reminiscent of
04:40 the wetsuits from Into Darkness.
04:42 You can definitely see that they are a bold choice.
04:45 They also had a kind of a ribbed undershirt, a bit like the monster maroons from Wrath
04:49 of Khan.
04:50 I get what they were going for here.
04:52 It was a bold look, it would immediately stand out.
04:53 You would never have to look at it and go "Oh, what film's that from?"
04:56 You would know straight away.
04:57 It does feel a little bit, I suppose, metallic and constrictive, which for a duty uniform,
05:04 I can see why they didn't go with this.
05:07 But it's definitely a bold image.
05:09 And yeah, what the heck's the point of the future if you can't be bold?
05:15 Number 7.
05:16 26th Century Enterprise, Star Trek Final Frontier.
05:20 No no, no no, I didn't say THE Final Frontier, I said Final Frontier.
05:27 Big difference.
05:28 After the cancellation of Star Trek Enterprise, there was almost another series greenlit named
05:35 Star Trek Final Frontier.
05:37 This would have aired on the official Star Trek website, which would have made it the
05:41 first streaming-only Star Trek series.
05:45 For several reasons, that didn't happen, but there was a design for the ship that Captain
05:51 Chase would command.
05:53 Now if you look at it, it's obviously quite different from what we're used to.
05:57 For example, your first thought would be like "Where's the saucer section?"
06:00 The primary hull more closely resembles an aircraft carrier than it does your traditional
06:05 saucer section.
06:06 And while I'm sort of hard-rooted in "I like it when it's round," I will say I get it.
06:13 I do get it.
06:14 And it's different.
06:15 You know, and you can't just keep repeating the same design over and over again.
06:19 Alright, I'm sure I'm going to eat my own words now that I've said that.
06:24 But you can see where there is inspiration for Matt Jeffery's original design.
06:28 And I mean inspiration.
06:29 I mean like lift and copy.
06:32 But also, in a way, it's like they've gone to the observation lounge in the Enterprise
06:37 D when that gold aircraft carrier was there and said "Boom, done.
06:41 Stick some nacelles on that.
06:42 We can go home for lunch."
06:43 It's funky.
06:46 Number six, the bridge, Star Trek Discovery.
06:50 First glance, you're going to be like "These are the same picture."
06:53 When you look at that and the bridge of Discovery.
06:56 But actually, what it is, is it's a little bit closer to what ended up appearing in Star
07:01 Trek Online.
07:02 Now, if you look closely, you'll see that the Ops and Con consoles are actually sunken
07:05 into the deck.
07:06 And there's a glass elevator that brings people above to the observation deck as well.
07:11 Which means that, yes, this would be a two-story bridge as opposed to your traditional one.
07:15 Now, that is something that turns up on the Odyssey class ships.
07:19 Prodigy more honors it than actually has it on the Proto Star.
07:23 But you can see that the inspiration is there.
07:25 It gives the idea that the bridge is more of a command center.
07:28 Then, if you take, for example, the bridge of the Enterprise D, which is gorgeous.
07:33 It's nice and brightly lit.
07:36 And I never for one second believed there was any work being done on that bridge because
07:41 it looked like a kind of a lounge where people went to hang out.
07:43 And look, I'm not giving it.
07:44 It's a lovely design.
07:45 It would be lovely to see it back in Prodigy.
07:47 Or something like this.
07:48 I would believe that if I was in there, I'd better have a damn good reason to be there.
07:53 You know, I'm making a delivery of like, I don't know, a warp core or something just
07:58 so that I had a reason to be on this bridge.
08:01 And that is something that can be sometimes lacking from Star Trek a little bit.
08:05 I will say that the Apple Store Enterprise of the 2009, the J.J. Abrams era, at least
08:12 that bridge, it looked busy.
08:13 There was stuff happening on that bridge.
08:16 There's a little bit more in Discovery.
08:19 Now what we saw over Riker's CGI shoulder in Picard, it looked like it was busy enough
08:24 on the Zheng He as well.
08:26 I really want to bring it to the fact that the bridge is supposed to be a center of operations.
08:30 And a lot of the time, because of the nature of episodic television, it became the hangout
08:34 room.
08:35 This does not look like the hangout room.
08:36 This looks like decisions are genuinely being made here.
08:41 Number five, Discovery's Enterprise, Star Trek Discovery.
08:44 Again, I can hear people going, "We had a whole season of it."
08:49 Strange New Worlds is also coming soon, of course.
08:52 So the one that was released in Discovery is actually a, well, not a redesign, a final
08:57 design of this initial concept that was designed by John Eaves and his team.
09:02 What they went for originally was to flatten it a little bit, to bring it closer to say
09:06 the design of Discovery.
09:08 They had the pylons jutting straight out to the sides as opposed to swept back as we would
09:13 eventually get in the show.
09:15 Now fins were more prominent on the nacelles, which were similar to the Enterprise B from
09:20 Generations, which actually John Eaves had played a hand in designing as well.
09:23 A more streamlined, much more Discovery-like version of the Enterprise.
09:29 Now when it came to actually realizing this on screen, this was refined and refined and
09:34 brought closer to Matt Jeffery's original design while also bringing in some of Doug
09:39 Drexler's additions to the NX-01 as well.
09:42 So it looked like more of a middle ground, really, between the NX-01 and I think we'll
09:48 say the movie refit of the Constitution class.
09:51 Because the general shape of the ship is closer to what we saw from the motion picture onwards.
09:57 The metallic design of the ship is obviously much closer to the NX-01, but there, Proudhon,
10:03 front for all to see, is that deflector dish.
10:06 But yes, the original concept design was much flatter, much closer to the way the Discovery
10:11 ended up looking, and also by the looks of things, much bigger than Discovery ended up
10:16 being, which of course is not the case in the show.
10:19 Number 4.
10:20 Klingons.
10:21 Star Trek Into Darkness.
10:23 In the J.J. Abrams universe, we got to see the Klingons in Into Darkness when they are
10:27 absolutely nobbled by Kan.
10:30 Now, they're definitely beefed up and badass.
10:34 Every one of these would be a bouncer I would not like to piss off on a night out.
10:39 They remove their helmets and you get their piercing in their ridges, and it's all a bit
10:44 cool and schlocky and whatever, leading to the wonderful nickname, Klingons.
10:48 I love it.
10:49 The original design, however, was slightly more alien than what we got.
10:54 If you look at those kind of diamond pattern, almost dreadlocks, coming out the back of
10:58 the head, you can actually see two things here.
11:01 One, you can see the inspiration for Discovery's Klingons.
11:06 Now it's not a direct correlation.
11:07 You wouldn't look at that and go, "Oh, alright, that's T'Kuvma."
11:10 But what it is, is you can definitely see, "Alright, we jumped off from here and they
11:14 landed on Star Trek Discovery Klingons."
11:17 But also, you look at that, and you kind of squint and turn your head to the side a little
11:24 bit, do you also see Gwyn and the Diviner?
11:30 Number three, the CSS world-raiser, Star Trek Picard.
11:35 In the second episode of the second season of Star Trek Picard, Penance, Q whisks Jean-Luc
11:42 away into a dark, dystopian universe.
11:45 On the wall, where had been hanging that beautiful portrait of the Enterprise D from the next
11:50 generation, is a new portrait of the CSS world-raiser.
11:56 This design was very clearly based on Andrew Probert's design of the Enterprise D from
12:00 the next generation, but this was done by Sean P. Tarango, who you might know as the
12:06 designer of the USS Titan.
12:09 He designed that ship for the cover of one of the novels, Sword of Damocles.
12:13 Showing that there was such a similar design crossing between universes, says that somewhere
12:19 in this dark, dystopian universe, I am 100% sure that Leah Brahms is existing in this
12:26 universe.
12:27 Now, Leah Brahms, of course, was introduced in the next generation as one of the designers
12:31 of the Enterprise D in-universe.
12:34 Then there was a slightly problematic storyline, including Leah Brahms, Hologram, and Geordi
12:41 La Forge, which, to be very honest, was as creepy then as it is now.
12:46 So that was in the good universe.
12:49 Can you imagine what's in this universe?
12:52 Anyway, the CSS world-raiser hasn't been shown on screen, it's just that painting
12:56 in his office and some beautiful concept art that is available to see online as well.
13:02 It's a bit of a badass ship, the painting shows it carving its way through a Borg cube.
13:08 I don't want to annoy this ship.
13:12 Number 2, the USS Emmett Till, what we left behind.
13:16 The USS Emmett Till was designed to appear in the proposed DS9 Season 8 that was put
13:22 together during the breaking session on what we left behind.
13:26 The design, as you'll see, it does look like what eventually became the Ibn Majid
13:31 on Star Trek Picard, which we've only seen a picture of, to be fair, and it looks a bit
13:35 like the Concorde class, which I believe is available in Star Trek Online.
13:39 The name Emmett Till was chosen to honour a horrific crime of the past, in keeping with
13:47 Star Trek trying to honour history and not let it be forgotten.
13:52 I do believe it would be a crime if we don't see the Emmett Till appear in some form or
13:56 another, even if it becomes, say, the Ibn Majid.
14:00 There's so much of Rios' story that we have yet to hear, so we may yet see this design
14:05 on screen.
14:06 I love this ship.
14:07 I love the way the nacelles sit one atop the other.
14:10 Captain Esri Dax, yes please.
14:13 And I think it would be a crime if we don't see this on screen.
14:16 So many great ship designs are just sitting in hypothetical space dock.
14:21 Let's get this one out there.
14:22 Number 1.
14:23 The Enterprise A, Star Trek Beyond.
14:27 We had a blink and you'll miss it cameo, really, from the Enterprise A in Star Trek Beyond.
14:33 Designer Sean Hargreaves was given the job of creating the next Enterprise in the series
14:38 after the destruction of the Enterprise at the hands of Kroll and the Swarm.
14:43 It's to take in an awful lot of inspiration for what went before in terms of what happened
14:47 to the ship.
14:48 For example, the pylons and the neck of the Enterprise A are much beefier, much stockier,
14:53 because they had become weak points.
14:55 Commercial model makers have not done one of the Enterprise A because it was never really
15:00 intended to be the final design.
15:02 We may not see this ship again, or we may not see an expansion of it.
15:06 There is always talk of more films, of more series.
15:10 Who knows?
15:11 It is said with hope that maybe we will see it again, because I'm always on board for
15:14 another Enterprise.
15:15 Always.
15:16 It would be great to see, you know, like we've already had a confirmation that the Kelvin
15:20 Universe exists in Discovery.
15:21 We'd love to see maybe a crossover.
15:24 Stranger things have happened.
15:26 You know, Neelix was in a show for seven seasons.
