00:00 There are some hidden gems of music schools in the Valley,
00:03 but one that isn't, and that is Rosie's House.
00:05 And with me is Marvin and Michael here,
00:07 who's one of the instructors.
00:08 And we're very excited to have you here,
00:10 because I said, this is a hidden gem.
00:11 How long has this been around now?
00:13 - Rosie's House has been in the opera for 27 years.
00:15 - Wow, that's amazing.
00:16 And some amazing artists have come out of there
00:18 that have moved on to teach
00:20 or gone on to be professional performers.
00:22 It's amazing.
00:23 And I thought,
00:24 'cause I usually hear you guys during the Christmas time
00:26 with the mariachis doing Christmas music,
00:27 but how many different programs are there?
00:29 - We have 11 program areas.
00:32 We have pretty much the full range of opportunities
00:35 for kids to get involved in music.
00:36 We have a mariachi ensemble,
00:38 we have a choir ensemble, a band,
00:39 we have a strings ensemble.
00:41 We have private lessons
00:42 in all the different instruments.
00:43 We teach saxophone, clarinet, flute.
00:47 We have all the mariachi ensembles.
00:48 We have guitar, digital music,
00:50 and now even early childhood.
00:52 - Oh my goodness, this is crazy and amazing,
00:54 because we've been noticing that some high schools
00:56 have been having to cut their music programs
00:58 or pull back a little bit.
00:59 So this is an opportunity for kids
01:01 from all over the valley to come to one place
01:03 to be able to continue their love of music.
01:07 - Yeah, at Rose's House,
01:08 we offer high quality music education
01:09 for those who would not be able to afford
01:11 that opportunity on their own
01:12 or where they may be lacking it in their schools.
01:14 And so families come from all over Phoenix
01:16 to participate in our program.
01:18 - I like that.
01:19 Okay, coming up this December
01:20 is a great weekend of performances going on.
01:23 What's gonna be happening?
01:24 - Yeah, so we have in December two incredible concerts.
01:26 First featuring our mariachi ensembles,
01:29 both the beginning, intermediate, and advanced
01:31 on December 2nd, Saturday at the Herberger Theater
01:35 at seven o'clock.
01:36 We also have a special guest artist,
01:38 Mariachi Pueblo Viejo from Tucson coming
01:40 and performing with us on that concert.
01:42 And then on Sunday at five o'clock at the Herberger again
01:45 is our annual holiday concert
01:47 featuring many more of our ensembles and soloists as well.
01:50 - Oh my goodness, so we gotta get tickets for that.
01:52 That's just gonna be amazing.
01:52 And of course, Michael,
01:54 you guys are kind of like the beginning
01:57 of this whole weekend of celebration and everything.
01:59 But I wanna talk about how important the mariachi music is
02:03 to this community, but continuing on,
02:05 because as I said, some programs have been cut short.
02:07 Some people don't even keep the mariachi band tradition
02:11 in some of the schools.
02:12 So how great is this for you to be teaching this?
02:14 - This is definitely just a great opportunity all around,
02:17 especially here in Phoenix,
02:19 Rosie's House being featuring the mariachi ensemble,
02:23 where of course, like you said,
02:25 which is not really so much in the school system.
02:27 There are a couple of schools now in the Valley
02:29 that have a mariachi program,
02:31 but I don't think anything compares
02:33 to the ones that we have here at Rosie's House.
02:35 - And how young do you start them?
02:37 - So we, right now, the youngest I have is a fourth grader,
02:41 but we go all the way through high school senior.
02:43 - I like it.
02:44 And I'm gonna put you on the spot
02:45 'cause everyone wonders about with the mariachi band,
02:47 what's the most important instrument in there?
02:49 - Oof.
02:50 (laughing)
02:53 Well, we need a heartbeat.
02:54 - A heartbeat?
02:55 - Kind of like a band needs drums.
02:56 - There it is.
02:57 - This is the instrument that would feature that.
02:58 - But you said, and I love this,
03:00 the cherry on top of the whole band is the--
03:03 - Trumpet.
03:04 - Yeah, it is.
03:05 You just like to hear that.
03:06 - Definitely.
03:06 - This is great.
03:07 Well, this is awesome that you guys are gonna be performing
03:08 to kick off this weekend.
03:10 You're gonna perform right now
03:10 for us a little holiday song.
03:12 - That's right.
03:13 - I want you to hop back in there.
03:13 Tell them very quickly where they can find tickets
03:15 and everything to come and enjoy Rosie's House.
03:17 - Go to rosieshouse.org online,
03:19 and then you can have tickets.
03:20 They are for free for both of the concerts at no cost.
03:23 - I like it.
03:24 All right, let them take it away.
03:25 Come on.
