00:00 The Manchester Band of Hope procession was filmed in June 1901 and actually forms part
00:11 of many exhibitions commissioned by A.D. Thomas during his two-month stay.
00:20 The Band of Hope was a temperance movement aimed at promoting abstinence of alcohol and
00:26 the banners themselves actually portray the influence of this temperance movement at the
00:31 time.
00:45 The Band of Hope was formed in order to actually safeguard the health and welfare of the children
00:51 and the processions form a popular part of their marketing ploy in order to attract new
00:58 converts to the cause.
01:11 Its target audience were children and they used the latest technologies such as the magic
01:14 lantern and the cinematograph as an instrument of education in their fight against the perils
01:19 of alcohol.
01:24 The films reflect the importance of children and women in their fight against the evils
01:29 of drink including banners such as bread and not beer.
01:36 The children often wore Sunday best and even though the nature of the exhibition and the
01:42 nature of the actual march is supposed to be solemn with sobriety the order of the day,
01:48 the spontaneous reaction of people to the camera shows that the actual procession was
01:52 a major part of celebrations in the Manchester region.
