Hartlepool Rail Station £12m Revamp Update

Network Rail and Northern bosses reveal when work will be finished and the new platform open to passengers.

00:08 what stage is the work at here at the station?

00:10 Well, we're close to the completion of construction now. Construction is due to complete in January

00:16 next year. We're expecting it will be open for passenger use in spring 2024.

00:23 And what will this mean for the town and the station generally?

00:27 Well, we're installing a new fully accessible footbridge, so the platform is going to be

00:33 fully accessible and the new platform that we're installing will enable greater capacity

00:38 on the rail network, which means an increase in train services, so that people will find

00:44 it easier to move around and to use around the region.

00:47 Is that something that's needed?

00:49 Yes, I think local users are very keen on having some increased capacity on the rail

00:55 network.

00:57 Okay, so can you just tell me what this extra platform will mean in terms of northern services?

01:02 So this is a great opportunity for northern to increase capacity along the busy Durham

01:07 coast routes, so between Middlesbrough and Newcastle we can put an extra service on the

01:11 buses every two hours and it's slightly quicker than the existing services, so it's a ten

01:16 minute less journey time and it just provides much needed additional capacity for local

01:22 users on this particular route.

01:24 And that's a service that's starting soon?

01:26 It is, yes, so as soon as the platform is ready we can start pulling at Harding Hill,

01:30 but even before the Harding Hill platform is ready we will be pulling services to the

01:34 city of Middlesbrough and Newcastle, just excluding the Harding Hill stop, and that

01:38 will be ready for the times it will change on the 10th of December.
