00:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:43 Yes, Akshay, please.
00:45 Can I ask a question?
00:46 Yes, yes.
00:47 [LAUGHTER]
00:50 So, [INAUDIBLE]
00:53 And so all the main characters are all women.
01:03 So I just want to know whether men are irrelevant--
01:06 [LAUGHTER]
01:09 In your scheme of things.
01:11 Is dessert irrelevant?
01:14 No.
01:15 You need dessert, right, to be happy.
01:17 So men are important for us to enjoy ourselves and indulge.
01:21 And I think that a lot of this, what I could do,
01:27 including going to study, I would not
01:30 be able to do if he hadn't supported me the way he has.
01:33 And I would have still done it, but it would have been very difficult.
01:36 So he was always there.
01:38 He said, you want to do this?
01:39 Fine.
01:40 You do it.
01:41 And he didn't complain.
01:42 He didn't say, you're taking my daughter or whatever.
01:44 But he did get angry once, very angry, actually.
01:48 Because wherever I go, stories follow me.
01:51 So I was in a building, and I realized
01:53 that the person living in that building
01:55 was somebody who'd been arrested by the FBI for doing
01:59 a thing called a Vatican scam.
02:01 And then I got fascinated, and I started
02:04 wanting to chase him and get a story out of it.
02:07 And I then got another neighbor who said that he was going to help me.
02:11 And he made this plan to take a bottle of wine and knock on his door.
02:14 And this was going on, and I kept telling Akshay.
02:16 Until this friend told me, I helped a journalist who was investigating
02:20 the Russians in a visa scam.
02:22 And he got a great story.
02:23 They cut off his little finger, but he got a great story.
02:25 And then Akshay had a fit.
02:27 And he said, I'm not letting you do this.
02:29 You're living alone with my kid.
02:30 So that was the only time.
02:31 So he stops me if I'm just about to fall off the cliff.
02:36 So then he's kind of there.
02:37 I don't know, maybe he hopes I fall off the cliff,
02:39 then he can get married again.
02:40 I'm not so sure.
02:41 Thank you, Akshay.
02:42 Very good.
02:43 [APPLAUSE]
02:44 [INAUDIBLE]
02:46 Yes?
02:48 My daughter's here.
02:50 And I think most of this book I wrote at 4.35 in the morning in the dark
02:56 when she was sleeping next to me.
02:58 And there is a line in the book where Goma looks at her daughter
03:02 and says that her daughter-- she doesn't know if her daughter is
03:05 beautiful or not, but when she looks at her,
03:07 she feels the same way when she looks at majestic objects like the Arj Mahal
03:12 and the Golden Temple.
03:14 And I think I felt like that about my child.
03:16 So the one thing I can say about being a mother is the fact that you have
03:21 to really carve out that time and protect that time,
03:24 because children invariably look at-- when you're working,
03:27 they will come to you.
03:28 And another place when they want you is when you're in the bathroom.
03:32 So these two places, whenever they see that you're at your desk
03:34 or the bathroom, they keep calling out to you.
03:37 So I think sometimes you feel that you're being a little selfish,
03:40 but then if you do accomplish something,
03:42 then you're also setting yourself up to be a role model for these young girls.
03:45 And hopefully you feel a little less guilty like that.
03:48 That's all I can say.
03:50 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:53 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:57 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:03 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:06 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:09 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:12 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:15 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:18 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:21 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:24 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:27 I mean, definitely your stories will have the truth.
04:29 But the truth, I would say, in a very simple analogy, is like a potato.
04:33 You can make aloo jeera, you can make French fries.
04:35 But the chemical composition of that truth does not change.
04:38 So is the truth present in my stories?
04:41 Yes.
04:42 Will you be able to recognize it?
04:43 No.
04:44 And I'm not going to tell you which parts are true, obviously.
04:46 Otherwise, I would have written a memo of it.
04:48 And my mother would have killed me.
04:50 That's another reason.
04:51 Thank you.
04:52 Thank you, sir.
04:53 Farah, if I'm honest, my first ambition was to grow up and be Farah.
04:56 So that is what I wanted to be.
04:58 I ran away once to Delhi, because Farah was in Delhi.
05:01 And I don't know if that's a good thing or not,
05:04 but I didn't achieve that ambition.
05:06 So I didn't turn into Farah.
05:09 I was always a reader, but I never wanted to become a writer.
05:12 I wanted to become a charted accountant.
05:14 So I wanted to be basically Bimal Parikh and have glasses and look at numbers.
05:18 But life took me in a different direction.
05:22 I was always a reader.
05:23 And I'd written half a book when I was about 18, 19.
05:27 And my mother is here.
05:29 So she has a floppy disk of this book.
05:33 And when I tell her now that, Mom, why did you encourage me?
05:35 When I would show her my work, she'd say, but you're missing dance classes
05:38 or go and thread your mustache or things like this.
05:41 But now when I tell her this, she's saying, it's the right thing,
05:47 because you could be an actress at that age.
05:49 And if suppose you were successful, then what you would be doing now?
05:52 So basically, she's trying to make me feel better by saying that
05:56 I set you up for failure so that now you're doing well.
05:59 On that note, thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
06:04 And give it up to Twinkle.
06:06 [APPLAUSE]
06:10 Literally, her return to paradise goes for every author paradise is home.
06:15 And we're glad to have another book that's going to hit all the charts.
06:20 You are immensely talented, my love.
06:23 And I hope that you grow from strength to strength.
06:26 And may the force of creation always be with you.
