00:00:00 DLNS media with the best day of the week,
00:00:03 college football recap and preview,
00:00:06 focusing on the draft eligible quarterbacks.
00:00:09 This show is brought to you by our friends
00:00:11 at SeatGeek and FanDuel, more from them later.
00:00:13 But first, check in with my co-pilot
00:00:16 for these draft shows, Alex Barth.
00:00:19 Alex, how are you doing today, brother?
00:00:20 And since this is technically a Patriots show,
00:00:23 if you got any thoughts on the current quarterback
00:00:25 situation, controversy, whatever the hell you wanna call
00:00:28 what's going on right now, feel free to share.
00:00:31 Yeah, how's it going, Taylor?
00:00:32 It's fitting that we're gonna come on here
00:00:34 and talk about quarterbacks because look,
00:00:37 Mac Jones seems to be past the point of no return,
00:00:42 setting up for them to bench him.
00:00:43 There was a report from the Boston Herald
00:00:45 that he's spiraling and you can see that in real time
00:00:48 and it can be so tough for quarterbacks.
00:00:50 And I'm somebody who obviously believed in Mac Jones
00:00:52 at the beginning, and I do think the issues with him
00:00:55 are more about his setting than him personally.
00:00:59 I do think it's more of a nurture thing
00:01:02 than a nature thing with him.
00:01:03 But here we are, it's looking like they need,
00:01:05 I'm not saying that I was struck today,
00:01:07 like, oh, Mac Jones is the future
00:01:09 and then today he gets pulled to practice, oh no.
00:01:11 But it's another one of these days
00:01:13 where it's like that reality setting in of
00:01:16 they're gonna be back in that quarterback carousel
00:01:18 this off season and it's gonna be the draft.
00:01:21 Like I know some people have floated the idea
00:01:23 of Kirk Cousins, 36 years old, coming off a torn Achilles.
00:01:27 There's no future there.
00:01:28 You don't have any talent around him
00:01:30 to maximize the current window.
00:01:31 Like, no thank you.
00:01:33 They gotta go to the draft.
00:01:34 Maybe you go get your guy like Baker Mayfield or Jacoby.
00:01:36 Bursett is like a bridge guy, but no,
00:01:38 the next true franchise quarterback for the Patriots
00:01:41 is coming from the draft.
00:01:43 And the consolation, I guess, if you wanna call it that,
00:01:46 is if there is a year to need a quarterback, this is it.
00:01:49 Because the last two years in the draft
00:01:52 haven't been great draft classes.
00:01:54 This is as good of a class as we've seen
00:01:55 since that 2021 class, which obviously didn't turn out
00:01:59 as well as we thought it would.
00:02:01 But in terms of your options,
00:02:02 in terms of the number of prospects,
00:02:04 you're gonna have more chances to kind of hit.
00:02:08 You're gonna have more darts to throw
00:02:10 to kind of try to hit and find that next quarterback.
00:02:13 - Yeah, it's unfortunate too, man.
00:02:15 And this is like, the whole Mac Jones experiment
00:02:17 really emphasizes how this off season needs to be focused.
00:02:21 Like there are plenty of holes on defense
00:02:22 that need to be addressed as well.
00:02:23 But offensively, they cannot, whether it's Jacoby,
00:02:26 whether it's almost definitely a rookie quarterback
00:02:28 that they take in the first round,
00:02:30 that guy needs to be set up to succeed
00:02:32 with the offensive line and with his weaponry.
00:02:34 Because what they've done for Mac Jones
00:02:36 in his first three seasons is pretty much malpractice.
00:02:39 And yes, he's exacerbating issues.
00:02:41 Yes, he's spiraling and all these things,
00:02:43 but it all starts with the organization.
00:02:45 'Cause he is a young player
00:02:46 who needed to be guided in this league.
00:02:47 And unfortunately we're seeing that that was not the case.
00:02:50 But this is a happy show.
00:02:52 We just had to acknowledge the fact that, you know,
00:02:54 we're probably gonna get a shakeup
00:02:55 at quarterback for the Patriots
00:02:56 just to underline how important it is to be up to date
00:02:59 and have some idea what's going on with these quarterbacks.
00:03:02 So we're gonna start with our recaps.
00:03:04 First guy we're gonna take a look at was Bo Nix.
00:03:06 It's a big, obviously rivalry weekend,
00:03:08 played Oregon against Oregon State.
00:03:10 Now Bo at 33 for 40, 367 yards and two touchdowns.
00:03:15 It was another one of those kind of Bo Nix performances
00:03:17 where a lot of the throws are just kind of things
00:03:19 you know, underneath really just doing his job,
00:03:21 not making bad decisions.
00:03:23 I did like that I saw him use his legs a little bit.
00:03:25 You know, he ran some, he had a couple of throws on the run,
00:03:29 showed, doesn't have great arm strength,
00:03:31 but he can get the ball there.
00:03:32 He had one across his body.
00:03:34 And then I thought he had a couple of nice tight window
00:03:36 throws and one nice layer throw.
00:03:39 He had a couple of defenders in the area
00:03:40 and locked it to his guy.
00:03:41 So what did you think about his performance
00:03:43 and did it sway you one way or the other
00:03:45 in terms of where he could get taken?
00:03:48 - I think more what we've seen from Bo Nix,
00:03:50 there was definitely a little more of a playmaking element
00:03:52 from him in this game, but he's still,
00:03:54 I think that ceiling is capped.
00:03:56 And like you said, it's a lot around the line of scrimmage
00:03:59 through 12 games, his average depth of target is a dot,
00:04:02 is seven yards, that ranks 37th among qualifying quarterbacks
00:04:06 eligible for this year's draft.
00:04:08 So yeah, I think more what you saw from him,
00:04:11 I think the selection committee saying that
00:04:15 the part of the reason they have Oregon over Texas
00:04:17 is Bo Nix completion percentage is absurd.
00:04:20 - That is insane.
00:04:21 (laughing)
00:04:23 - Yeah, the two reasons they gave
00:04:25 were Bo Nix's completion percentage
00:04:27 and that they beat Oregon State.
00:04:28 And look, I think Oregon State's a good team, I do,
00:04:30 but if the only two qualifications for making the playoffs
00:04:32 are a high completion percentage from your quarterback
00:04:34 and beating Oregon State,
00:04:35 then we need to talk about Arizona as a playoff team.
00:04:38 Shout out to Jet Fish.
00:04:39 But I, this is this week and we'll get to this week,
00:04:44 I think is bigger for Bo Nix.
00:04:45 It's that redemption shot against Washington.
00:04:48 He continues to do what he needs to do.
00:04:51 I don't know that there's so much,
00:04:54 and the numbers are obviously good,
00:04:55 but again, a lot of it's after the catch,
00:04:57 things like that, scheme touches.
00:04:58 I need to see him go out there and really sling it again
00:05:02 for him to go over the top and really seal himself
00:05:04 as a first round pick.
00:05:06 I, again, I don't want to spoil too much getting ahead,
00:05:08 but like, again, it's all near the line of scrimmage.
00:05:10 What I still need to see from him is,
00:05:12 and I don't know why more teams aren't doing this,
00:05:14 teams step up, take away the inside stuff,
00:05:17 take away the go routes, or take away the short stuff,
00:05:19 take away the go routes, and force him to test
00:05:21 the intermediate deep parts of the field over the middle.
00:05:24 - I haven't seen that.
00:05:25 - And so far, right, and a lot of that is just because
00:05:29 of the other playmakers Oregon has,
00:05:31 and Oregon has a lot of great playmakers.
00:05:33 And it's not just Nix you're trying to stop,
00:05:35 obviously we're talking in the context of the draft,
00:05:37 these teams are trying to win games.
00:05:39 But I wonder if that's what Washington's gonna do this week,
00:05:42 if that's how they're gonna play
00:05:43 and really get some pressure on Bo Nix.
00:05:45 So we'll see, but again, another good performance from him.
00:05:48 Like he's up there for the Heisman,
00:05:49 I don't think he should win it,
00:05:50 but he's up there for the Heisman,
00:05:51 he's doing what he needs to do.
00:05:53 He really hasn't had a bad game at all this year.
00:05:55 And in a year that has been a roller coaster
00:05:58 for a lot of these quarterbacks, up and down,
00:06:01 Nix and Michael Penix, the two quarterbacks
00:06:04 we'll see Saturday night or Friday night,
00:06:06 have been the picture of consistency.
00:06:08 And I think you value consistency in the quarterback,
00:06:10 and that might be Nix best trade at this point,
00:06:13 but the top end playmaking stuff,
00:06:17 it's just, if it's there, he's not doing it right now.
00:06:20 So it's tough to kind of give him,
00:06:22 put that check in the box for him,
00:06:25 which is big when you're talking about the modern game,
00:06:27 you want quarterbacks that are gonna go out there
00:06:29 and not just distribute the ball, but be playmakers.
00:06:31 - Yeah, especially if you're talking about a guy
00:06:32 who's gonna come in and be expected
00:06:34 to kind of carry the franchise,
00:06:35 because a rookie quarterback is not gonna be perfect,
00:06:38 but you at least want somebody who, okay,
00:06:39 if they do miss their first read,
00:06:41 if the protection breaks down,
00:06:42 like if something does go wrong,
00:06:43 whether it's because they're young
00:06:45 or because something else fails them,
00:06:46 you'd like them to be able to succeed
00:06:48 outside of that structure as they find their way in the NFL
00:06:51 and start to learn what they can and can't do,
00:06:53 as opposed to like a Mac Jones type,
00:06:54 where obviously, the processing
00:06:56 and all the things he was praised for in college,
00:06:58 they showed up his rookie year,
00:06:59 and that's why he was able to have success.
00:07:01 But then we saw as the pieces around him
00:07:03 started to deteriorate and the system around him,
00:07:05 obviously last year was dog poop.
00:07:08 I almost said the other thing.
00:07:10 But when those things are against him,
00:07:11 he couldn't really do anything more,
00:07:13 and that's not his fault,
00:07:14 but you'd like to see somebody who can elevate themselves.
00:07:16 And it's why, for me, Bo, like quarterbacks always have,
00:07:20 their value is heightened
00:07:23 just because of the quality of the position
00:07:25 and how important it is.
00:07:25 And with a guy like Bo, for the reasons you said,
00:07:28 I just don't think he's a first round guy.
00:07:30 I think he's like fringe second round,
00:07:32 and that's just because he's hyper consistent.
00:07:34 And you're like, okay, I pretty much know
00:07:36 what's gonna happen if I plug him in,
00:07:37 but, and again, because it's just a position
00:07:39 where you need a guy,
00:07:40 and some teams are just gonna be pretty desperate,
00:07:42 I'm sure he'll get picked earlier than that.
00:07:44 But if we're talking like what he brings to a team,
00:07:46 I do not think he's a first round quarterback.
00:07:48 And again, I think second round is generous
00:07:50 and only because he doesn't have glaring red flags.
00:07:54 - So the only way I see Bo Nix going in the first round is,
00:07:59 and this is the kind of team that should take him anyway,
00:08:01 but I look at a team like San Francisco
00:08:03 that has all the pieces in place.
00:08:05 Maybe they don't wanna pay Brock Purdy.
00:08:07 Maybe they know, hey, in two years,
00:08:09 we're gonna have to move on from this kid
00:08:11 and let's just get the next guy ready.
00:08:12 And maybe two years, a little bit of runway,
00:08:15 a little bit too much runway,
00:08:16 especially with a guy as old as Bo Nix,
00:08:17 but like a team like that,
00:08:19 or maybe if the Jets trade back up and they say,
00:08:21 hey, look, we've got these receivers,
00:08:22 we've invested in these receivers, we have a good defense.
00:08:25 If Rodgers doesn't come back from this Achilles,
00:08:27 we want a guy that we can plug in.
00:08:29 Bo Nix is basically the guy
00:08:31 that if everything else is figured out,
00:08:34 you can plug him in and be comfortable
00:08:36 that he's not gonna make a mess of the offense.
00:08:38 - Exactly.
00:08:39 - That he's gonna get the ball to the guys
00:08:40 he needs to get the ball to.
00:08:41 So the thing is, the teams with a ton of talent
00:08:45 usually also have a good quarterback.
00:08:47 There's not that many teams.
00:08:48 I don't know, Taylor, maybe I'm missing one.
00:08:50 I'm trying to think off the top of my head,
00:08:51 but how many teams, there were a couple of last few years
00:08:54 that it was like, okay, they're a quarterback away,
00:08:57 and it feels like they've all gotten quarterbacks.
00:08:59 Maybe the Falcons, if you really believe in Drake London
00:09:03 and Kyle Petsch, you say, all right,
00:09:05 we're gonna plug Bo Nix in here
00:09:07 into the Arthur Smith offense,
00:09:09 where it's a lot of play action.
00:09:10 It's a lot of just get out and deliver.
00:09:14 Maybe something like that to kind of,
00:09:17 Gino Smith's on the older side, all right,
00:09:19 we got DK Metcalf, we got JSN.
00:09:21 That's the kind of team that should be looking at Bo Nix.
00:09:25 If you're the Patriots, where you still have,
00:09:29 what are you plugging Bo Nix into?
00:09:32 He's not real, and most teams picking high
00:09:34 in the first round, they have other needs.
00:09:36 So again, for me, these are the kind of teams
00:09:39 that I look at for Bo Nix.
00:09:40 Could one maybe get eager and move up
00:09:42 and get him at the end of the first?
00:09:43 Yeah, I think so, but to me, that's like a day two pick.
00:09:47 - Now that you said Arthur Smith's system,
00:09:50 I'm starting to think he's kind of like a safer,
00:09:52 but less exciting Ryan Tannehill,
00:09:54 where like, I think Tannehill has a better arm,
00:09:56 I think he's a better athlete,
00:09:57 obviously he's played around the receiver,
00:09:58 but he kind of has a brain fart every once in a while
00:10:00 where you're like, dude, literally,
00:10:01 like you just had to not mess up, and you did.
00:10:04 Whereas I feel like Bo Nix, again, not as electric,
00:10:07 I'm not gonna necessarily say Tannehill's electric,
00:10:09 but in terms of athleticism, he's not quite there,
00:10:11 but I think he's a bit safer moving.
00:10:13 - When you go, sorry, you go back to like,
00:10:16 when the Titans were kind of breaking out with this group,
00:10:19 and that would have been what, like 18, 19, right?
00:10:23 When Derrick Henry was on the ascent, and they had Tannehill.
00:10:26 Remember Tannehill was like in the MVP conversation
00:10:28 there for a couple of years?
00:10:29 - That was a wild, yeah, that was a wild time in football.
00:10:32 - Such a perfect fit.
00:10:33 Like, that to me is like what you want with Bo Nix.
00:10:36 Like, that to me, he can be that guy.
00:10:39 - Yep, I agree, I agree.
00:10:41 All right, you mentioned Michael Penix.
00:10:43 - It's not me saying Bo Nix is gonna win an MVP,
00:10:45 but it's like, if you put him in the right system
00:10:47 and allow you to- - Important distinction.
00:10:49 - They went to the playoffs, they came into Foxborough,
00:10:51 they beat the Patriots in the playoffs,
00:10:52 they knocked off the Ravens,
00:10:54 and then the next year they were the one seed.
00:10:56 And like, ultimately, did they ever win a Super Bowl?
00:10:58 No, and some of that was 'cause of the cap
00:10:59 on the quarterback, but again,
00:11:01 that's just the kind of thing I see Bo Nix doing,
00:11:03 where it's a good run game,
00:11:04 he's got a couple of good receivers, right?
00:11:06 AJ Brown was there, and he's just gonna kinda,
00:11:08 he's not gonna get in the way of it.
00:11:10 He's not gonna get in the way of anything.
00:11:11 He's gonna, he'll add a little bit,
00:11:12 but the biggest thing is he's not gonna get in the way.
00:11:15 - Agreed.
00:11:16 All right, mentioned Michael Penix Jr.,
00:11:18 so we're gonna talk about him.
00:11:19 Had, by his standards, you know, a pretty meh day,
00:11:23 rivalry game against Washington State.
00:11:24 Went 18 for 33, 204 yards, two touchdowns,
00:11:28 and an interception.
00:11:30 Now, this was, I felt like, in terms of Penix,
00:11:33 I didn't think this was a game where we really saw anything.
00:11:35 Similar to Bo Nix, where there wasn't anything that was,
00:11:37 "Oh, wow, I learned something from this."
00:11:39 It was more like I'm looking right now.
00:11:41 He had a couple of pretty wide open shots.
00:11:43 His interception wasn't his fault.
00:11:44 He was trying to fit it into a tight window,
00:11:46 give his guy a chance.
00:11:47 His guy didn't capitalize on it.
00:11:49 But you know, he made some of the throws
00:11:51 he had to make late to make sure
00:11:52 that they were able to win the game.
00:11:53 He had a nice throw to Roman Dunzey for the touchdown.
00:11:56 And there was a sack late in the game.
00:11:58 You know, I kind of was iffy about his ball security there,
00:12:01 'cause it looked like he was a little loose with it.
00:12:02 But again, for me, it didn't really move the needle
00:12:05 one way or another.
00:12:06 It's like, yeah, it was Michael Penix.
00:12:07 It was a, you know, a tough game.
00:12:08 And I don't know much about Washington State's defense,
00:12:10 so I'm curious what your thoughts were on the fact
00:12:12 that this was a 24 to 21 game.
00:12:14 So it was, you know, it was a competitive one
00:12:16 against a team that, as far as I know,
00:12:18 I don't think Washington State's ranked.
00:12:19 So what were your thoughts on his performance there?
00:12:22 - Yeah, well, just rivalry week as a whole.
00:12:24 And I meant to say this before the last game.
00:12:26 These games are always close.
00:12:27 It really doesn't, it sounds like a cliche.
00:12:29 You throw out the records, it really doesn't matter.
00:12:31 You saw Alabama go toe to toe with Auburn.
00:12:34 Georgia struggled with Georgia Tech.
00:12:36 Oregon and Oregon State were close.
00:12:38 I mean, those are two better teams,
00:12:39 but like this is just kind of what rivalry weekend is.
00:12:42 Now this, they're not always all so close like this,
00:12:46 all coming down to the wire,
00:12:47 but they're not your typical, you know,
00:12:50 one team has eight wins, one team has four wins.
00:12:52 And it's gonna be a little closer than that.
00:12:54 Usually it's gonna look a little closer.
00:12:56 On Panic, so I talked about the consistency thing.
00:12:58 I think Panic has been super consistent.
00:13:01 Still, this might've been his worst game.
00:13:03 I did really like the throw to Adunze.
00:13:06 I thought that was, you know, textbook him.
00:13:08 I don't know what they were doing late in the game.
00:13:11 So they have the ball five minutes to go, tie to 21.
00:13:15 They're driving down the field.
00:13:16 He does make a really good read.
00:13:18 They ran this kind of weird read option
00:13:22 where off the handoff,
00:13:24 he like flips the ball behind his back
00:13:26 to Adunze on a fourth and one.
00:13:28 I don't know if you saw that play,
00:13:31 which is a great read by him in a ballsy plan.
00:13:33 I love that.
00:13:34 But then, all right, they're like well in field goal range
00:13:36 against a tie game with like a minute and a half to go.
00:13:40 And he's making these really aggressive throws
00:13:43 and he should have been picked off once or twice.
00:13:45 He just wasn't, would have been game losing
00:13:48 interceptions probably.
00:13:50 I don't know if there's something up with the kicker
00:13:52 or whatever.
00:13:53 I don't know why they were calling passes
00:13:56 in that situation to begin with.
00:13:58 But when they were, you'd like to see him,
00:14:00 you know, handle the ball a little better.
00:14:02 I wonder if maybe it was a make a last case
00:14:05 for the Heisman thing and they wanted him
00:14:07 to throw the game winning touchdown kind of a stat ad.
00:14:10 Whatever it was, it was weird.
00:14:12 And I didn't like it.
00:14:13 Now I'm not gonna let that undo the whole evaluation
00:14:16 of the player, but it was for a guy that I think
00:14:18 has been very composed, to see him make some
00:14:22 of those decisions late in that game was very odd.
00:14:24 I don't mind the whole thing at the end
00:14:26 where like he couldn't watch the field goal.
00:14:27 He's an emotional guy.
00:14:28 We know that.
00:14:30 I've said this before, I like my quarterbacks
00:14:32 play with emotion.
00:14:33 Penix plays with his heart on his sleeve.
00:14:34 That's great.
00:14:35 I love it.
00:14:36 It's awesome.
00:14:37 That sequence at the end of the game though
00:14:38 was weird to me.
00:14:39 I didn't love seeing that.
00:14:41 - Yeah, yeah.
00:14:42 And especially with a guy like, you know,
00:14:44 you think about someone who's kind of emotional
00:14:46 and first thing that comes to mind
00:14:48 because of recent history is Caleb Williams
00:14:50 and like going up to his parents
00:14:51 after the game and all that.
00:14:52 And I'm not saying anything against Caleb,
00:14:53 but with Penix, I think, yeah,
00:14:55 you see that he doesn't wanna see it.
00:14:56 But like you said, emotion can be good for a quarterback,
00:14:59 especially when you see how much his teammates rally
00:15:01 around him and what his presence is like on the field.
00:15:04 So that isn't super, I would say, alarming as a sign.
00:15:08 Something that's maybe notable if you're really trying
00:15:10 to like get through the weeds and find like
00:15:12 your start splitting hairs is,
00:15:13 there's a whole phrase for that.
00:15:15 But yeah, definitely a weird situation late,
00:15:16 but I mean, the body of work has been very good.
00:15:20 And like I said, I personally didn't see anything
00:15:23 where I was really alarmed or thought
00:15:25 that I should really move the needle
00:15:26 for him one way or another.
00:15:27 But you're talking about how rivalry games are close,
00:15:30 not to undermine you, but I'm gonna talk about a game
00:15:32 that was not close at all.
00:15:34 Texas versus Texas Tech.
00:15:36 Texas Tech, 57 to seven.
00:15:39 Now this is one, Quinn Ewers went 17 for 28, 196,
00:15:43 touchdown and interception.
00:15:44 Archie Manning came into the game because,
00:15:48 that's 57 to seven.
00:15:49 But did you see anything from Quinn Ewers?
00:15:51 'Cause obviously, he wasn't a catalyst
00:15:54 for a 50 near 60 point game.
00:15:57 But what did you see from him
00:15:58 in the time that he was on the field?
00:16:00 - Yeah, he's coming back from that injury.
00:16:02 I think he looked good.
00:16:03 I think it's just a good sign that he got back on.
00:16:06 This is a guy that's now dealt with injuries,
00:16:07 shoulder injuries, two years in a row.
00:16:09 So for him to come back, for him to throw the ball,
00:16:12 I'm more interested to see what he does this weekend.
00:16:14 The interesting thing for me with Ewers is the decision.
00:16:18 So it's been reported that he's going back to school.
00:16:22 For him to do that, then come out and play,
00:16:24 this is a guy that's still trying
00:16:26 to win national championship,
00:16:27 still trying to win a big 12 championship, all that.
00:16:30 I just like the mentality of it.
00:16:32 I like the mentality you see that he went out there
00:16:34 and after a rough season, dealing with injuries,
00:16:36 probably not even when he's healthy,
00:16:38 the performance level he wanted, he expected,
00:16:40 the team expected, he's still out there putting it
00:16:43 on the line.
00:16:44 - Yeah, yep.
00:16:44 All right, not gonna spend too much time on that one.
00:16:46 All right, next up, we got Michigan State
00:16:48 versus Ohio State.
00:16:49 Michigan won 45 to 23.
00:16:52 J.J. McCarthy went 12 for 24, 263 yards and three touchdowns.
00:16:57 Short off some of his athleticism,
00:16:58 he made some plays with his legs.
00:17:00 I think the throw that people were really praising him for,
00:17:04 the touchdown down the seam,
00:17:06 I didn't love that because it seemed like he was trying
00:17:09 to move the safety.
00:17:10 Safety wasn't biting.
00:17:11 He throws it kind of blindly knowing
00:17:13 that he's about to get hit.
00:17:15 And the safety, as soon as the ball gets let go,
00:17:17 turns around, if the guy just stands there,
00:17:20 it's an easy interception.
00:17:21 So I saw that getting a lot of praise and I'm like,
00:17:23 yeah, I don't know about all that.
00:17:24 It was a tight window because he made a bad call.
00:17:27 But for the most part, it seemed like he had
00:17:29 a pretty solid performance.
00:17:30 He did have some nice throws in the game as well.
00:17:32 What did you think about how he played against
00:17:34 tough defense?
00:17:36 - It was better.
00:17:37 I mean, everybody knows that my thing with McCarthy
00:17:39 is that Michigan's hiding him.
00:17:40 They let him throw the ball 20 times.
00:17:42 So that's, it wasn't the Penn State game, right?
00:17:44 Where he threw it eight times.
00:17:46 He made some nice throws.
00:17:49 Again, you see that potential, but like you mentioned,
00:17:53 there was a good chance there for that
00:17:55 to be an interception.
00:17:56 There's another throw a lot of people were talking about
00:17:57 where he's rolling to the right,
00:17:59 kind of blindly throws back across his body.
00:18:01 It's completed, but that's not a throw you can make
00:18:04 as an NFL quarterback.
00:18:06 So still looks very raw to me.
00:18:09 I do wonder, he led them down late for the touchdown
00:18:14 and that showed a lot of poise for a young kid.
00:18:16 And I think that answers the question we had about him
00:18:18 that we maybe didn't have the answer to before,
00:18:21 but I still think he needs to go back to school.
00:18:23 He's still very raw.
00:18:24 His footwork was kind of falling out
00:18:25 from under him at times.
00:18:27 There were some questionable reads in that.
00:18:29 I still think he's a project quarterback.
00:18:32 And we'll see what he does this week against Iowa.
00:18:34 And again, we'll get to that.
00:18:35 But, and one other quarterback note from this game,
00:18:37 Kyle McCord, who was a top recruit at one point, sucks.
00:18:41 This is not good.
00:18:43 Ohio State needs to get a real quarterback
00:18:44 in the transfer portal so they can come back
00:18:46 and beat Michigan 'cause Kyle McCord's not gonna-
00:18:49 - Yeah, Marvin Harrison did his very best.
00:18:51 He had some freaky- - He was awesome.
00:18:53 - What you'd expect.
00:18:54 Yeah, he was fantastic, man.
00:18:55 He had some crazy catches in that game.
00:18:57 All right, last but not least,
00:18:59 the moment I'm sure a lot of people
00:19:00 have been waiting for in the chat.
00:19:01 I've already seen his name pop up.
00:19:03 One of my guys- - Wait, hang on.
00:19:04 Before your grand reveal, there's one more guy
00:19:06 I've realized I forgot to text you about
00:19:07 that we gotta talk about.
00:19:08 Not a draft prospect, but I wanted to mention him.
00:19:10 I don't know if you watched the Iron Bull, Taylor.
00:19:15 You saw- - I watched the Iron Bull.
00:19:16 I was traveling, I was traveling.
00:19:18 Yeah, it was tough.
00:19:19 - I'm sure you saw how Alabama-Auburn ended.
00:19:23 - Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:19:24 I did not see the whole game,
00:19:25 but it would have been impossible to miss that.
00:19:28 - Jalen Milrow.
00:19:30 We kind of talked about him a couple of weeks ago.
00:19:32 It's like, yeah, he's gonna go back to school.
00:19:34 Is his future as a quarterback?
00:19:35 What is it?
00:19:36 The way this kid has grown
00:19:39 from getting benched in mid-September
00:19:42 to what he did against Auburn last week.
00:19:46 Again, I would be shocked if he comes out this year.
00:19:49 He still has a lot of development to go,
00:19:51 but boy, can he, he's a legitimate
00:19:56 dual threat quarterback now.
00:19:58 He wasn't, nobody respected his arm earlier in the year.
00:20:01 He wasn't really giving them a reason to.
00:20:04 I think getting benched really helped him.
00:20:05 I think he got a week to reset his mind,
00:20:07 to kind of hone his mechanics.
00:20:09 Just gotta give a ton of credit to the game
00:20:12 Jalen Milrow played, and what a throw
00:20:13 to win the game on fourth and 31,
00:20:15 or fourth and goal from the 31.
00:20:18 I just, I gotta give him his flowers
00:20:20 'cause he was, it's been so much fun to watch him
00:20:23 these last couple of weeks.
00:20:26 - Does he remind you of another
00:20:28 former Alabama quarterback who was benched
00:20:30 and then came back and showed a lot of grit
00:20:33 to have a great performance and a great career afterwards?
00:20:36 - Mack Jones?
00:20:37 (laughing)
00:20:39 I assume you're talking about Jalen Hurts.
00:20:42 - Yeah.
00:20:43 - I actually, I think he's a better athlete
00:20:44 than Jalen Hurts is.
00:20:45 I don't know that Jalen Hurts has the speed
00:20:47 and the elusiveness.
00:20:48 Yeah, he doesn't really remind me.
00:20:52 You talk about, he's not--
00:20:54 - Not as a prospect, not as a prospect.
00:20:56 More in terms of like the mental makeup
00:20:58 and being able to bounce back in that regard.
00:21:00 - I think that's fair.
00:21:01 I think that's fair, yeah.
00:21:02 'Cause Jalen Hurts, that was a big deal for him
00:21:05 the way he came back.
00:21:06 So after that national championship game.
00:21:08 So yeah, actually, yeah, I'd buy that comparison.
00:21:12 - Yeah, I mean, I definitely think that
00:21:13 at that point in his career,
00:21:15 Jalen Hurts was a better passer.
00:21:16 And like you said, I don't think he was quite that athlete.
00:21:19 But another guy who I think mentally, at least,
00:21:21 in his ability to grow and develop
00:21:24 on a pretty rapid pace, Jaden Daniels.
00:21:28 Eight, 16 for 24, 235 yards, four touchdowns.
00:21:32 That was passing.
00:21:34 Running, he had 11 carries for 120 yards, a 10.9 average.
00:21:39 Everybody already knows he's a dual threat.
00:21:40 He really showed it.
00:21:41 Now I will say, this was a game against Texas A&M,
00:21:44 where I thought early on,
00:21:46 I just didn't see a lot of NFL quality plays with his arm.
00:21:50 You know, I didn't see like a ton of intensive,
00:21:52 granted I'm watching the broadcast,
00:21:53 so it's hard to really know.
00:21:54 But I wasn't seeing like a ton of anticipation throws.
00:21:57 I wasn't seeing any really challenging plays
00:21:59 or anything like that.
00:21:59 He was making stuff happen with his legs.
00:22:01 But then in the fourth quarter,
00:22:03 they were just like, all right, yeah,
00:22:04 we're gonna give you some goal balls, just sling it.
00:22:06 And that's where all the touchdowns came from.
00:22:08 And that's where they started to find some juice.
00:22:11 What did you think of this Jaden Daniels performance?
00:22:13 And as he is in a race for a Heisman,
00:22:15 maybe the front runner right now after that performance,
00:22:18 what did you think?
00:22:19 And do you think he really does deserve
00:22:20 to be as high in the Heisman debate
00:22:23 relative to that game as he currently is?
00:22:26 - Oh yeah, he should win the Heisman.
00:22:27 He's been outstanding and it was cool
00:22:29 to kind of see him settle in
00:22:32 and kind of have that rough start and bounce back.
00:22:34 'Cause there's been other guys like Drake May.
00:22:36 Drake May had a rough start this week
00:22:37 and we didn't get to him a ton.
00:22:38 I didn't think he was great.
00:22:39 I thought he had another down performance.
00:22:41 Drake May didn't start great and it snowballed off.
00:22:45 Whereas Jaden Daniels, and that's a game that,
00:22:47 I mean, Texas A&M just fired Jimbo Fisher, right?
00:22:50 They're bringing in a new head coach.
00:22:52 I could understand how else you might overlook that game
00:22:54 or at the very least it's a tough game to prepare for.
00:22:57 So I get it.
00:22:57 He came out a little slow,
00:22:59 bounced back in the second half.
00:23:01 Yeah, it's not, Texas A&M isn't the most talented team
00:23:04 despite all the money they spent on NIL.
00:23:07 Or if they are talented,
00:23:08 they're not using the players right.
00:23:09 But it's an SEC defense.
00:23:13 It's a top half of the SEC team that he tore up.
00:23:16 Yeah, he was outstanding again.
00:23:19 I talked about it before, like he's the anti-BoNix
00:23:21 where that big play potential is,
00:23:24 there's so much, you're just drooling seeing
00:23:27 what he can do if he's put in the right situation
00:23:30 in the NFL and he flashed a little bit more of that.
00:23:32 So, I see people in the chat talking about his size.
00:23:36 That is obviously the chief concern.
00:23:38 You know, his size and just, does he take care of himself?
00:23:41 He's very reckless when he runs the ball
00:23:43 in terms of taking tackles
00:23:44 rather than going out of bounds or sliding.
00:23:47 But no, he's been, I said this year,
00:23:50 he's been a rollercoaster for a lot of quarterbacks.
00:23:53 And I mean that in like, a lot of guys are not
00:23:57 where they were when the season started
00:24:00 in terms of draft expectations.
00:24:03 Jaden Daniels, his draft projection's
00:24:05 hardly been consistent, but it's just constantly,
00:24:08 I mean, it's shooting up.
00:24:10 It's just shooting straight up and it continues to do that.
00:24:13 - Yeah, real quick.
00:24:15 Dane Brugler came out with his first mock draft.
00:24:18 At number two, he had the Patriots taking Drake May.
00:24:21 Now, if you listen to the athletic podcast
00:24:23 that he does with Nate Tice,
00:24:24 they were all talking about Jaden Daniels
00:24:26 and how he is shooting up draft boards.
00:24:28 Like, the explosive plays that he's accounted for are insane.
00:24:31 Again, like I compare him to Hertz
00:24:33 because Hertz is someone who every single year
00:24:35 of his career has taken significant strides.
00:24:38 Where it's like, it's a completely different person.
00:24:40 And Jaden Daniels, you know, a lot of the talk
00:24:42 is the same thing, where even when he was at Arizona,
00:24:45 or Arizona State, I'm getting mixed up.
00:24:46 - Arizona State.
00:24:47 - Arizona State, that's what I thought.
00:24:49 Even in his last year there,
00:24:50 you started to see him make strides.
00:24:52 And then at LSU, he's not turning the ball over as much.
00:24:55 He's still making the big plays.
00:24:57 So, in that kind of conversation,
00:24:59 'cause I'm having this debate in my head.
00:25:01 Do you take Drake May,
00:25:02 considering that everybody just kind of agrees,
00:25:04 it seems, that he and Caleb Williams are 1A, 1B?
00:25:07 Or are you in the mindset of, this is kind of where I'm at,
00:25:11 where maybe, honestly, if you get a two or three pick,
00:25:14 you trade back to the end of the top 10,
00:25:16 maybe even top 15,
00:25:17 depending on where Jaden Daniels is projected to go.
00:25:20 Try to get some more capital, and then get him there,
00:25:23 because he's still a really good prospect.
00:25:25 And because the Patriots have so many holes,
00:25:27 I think getting more capital is probably ideal for them.
00:25:31 - Yeah, so I think the idea of,
00:25:32 do you trade back a couple spots, take QB three,
00:25:34 then trade back into the first round,
00:25:36 and take a tackle or receiver in that second tier.
00:25:38 I think that that's a real conversation.
00:25:41 What I would add to that though,
00:25:42 is Jaden Daniels QB three, or is he QB two?
00:25:46 I think there's a real chance there.
00:25:47 - That's the thing, I think by the time we, yeah.
00:25:49 - By the time we're all said and done,
00:25:51 that Jaden Daniels passes, in the eyes of some teams,
00:25:54 I don't know that every team will see it this way,
00:25:56 but all it takes is the team with the pick, right?
00:25:58 The big thing is gonna be, when we get to the combat,
00:26:02 so the senior bowl would be a big one for Jaden Daniels,
00:26:05 and honestly, Drake May, he should probably go,
00:26:07 'cause he just hasn't had that performance
00:26:10 since a good defense yet.
00:26:11 We need to see him throw against top players.
00:26:13 But when we get to the combine,
00:26:15 does Jaden Daniels put on 10 pounds?
00:26:19 Between the end of the season and the combine.
00:26:22 - It's like 215.
00:26:22 - And then if he does that, right, yeah.
00:26:25 If he can get up to even 220, even if he puts on five pounds.
00:26:29 But I'm saying like, if he's listed at 215 in college,
00:26:31 he's probably 210.
00:26:32 - Yeah.
00:26:33 - Which we'll get to real,
00:26:34 guys usually weigh in less at the combine,
00:26:36 but like if he can come in at 220 at the combine,
00:26:39 and still run, you know,
00:26:42 there's been unsubstantiated reports he runs a four-four.
00:26:46 But I don't know how realistic that is.
00:26:47 - I was thinking four-four-eight.
00:26:48 Is that what I texted you?
00:26:49 That he probably runs a four-four-eight?
00:26:51 - I think so.
00:26:52 Let me say that, if he can get to the combine at 220,
00:26:55 and run a four-six,
00:26:57 it's gonna be, there's a real conversation
00:27:02 about him and Drake May.
00:27:03 - Yeah.
00:27:04 - A real conversation.
00:27:05 Now, we just don't have those numbers yet.
00:27:07 And yes, playing quarterback at 215 in the NFL
00:27:11 is a big ask.
00:27:12 Especially, odds are a team drafting him
00:27:14 doesn't have a good offensive line,
00:27:15 he's gonna get hit a lot.
00:27:16 - Yeah.
00:27:17 - But yeah, if he can bulk up a little bit,
00:27:19 and still show he's as athletic,
00:27:22 there's gonna be real questions about him and May.
00:27:25 'Cause right now I think Drake May's floor
00:27:28 is a little higher, the ceiling's comparable.
00:27:30 - Yeah.
00:27:31 - I do believe the ceiling on the two is comparable,
00:27:32 there's just a little less boss potential
00:27:35 with Drake May because of his size.
00:27:37 And I think the pedigree is part of it.
00:27:38 Drake May was a five-star recruit,
00:27:40 originally committed to Alabama, all of that.
00:27:42 Jane Daniels, this guy that's,
00:27:44 he's kind of had a journey,
00:27:45 five-year college player, had a transfer,
00:27:48 multiple college coaches,
00:27:50 that's sort of what's setting them apart right now.
00:27:53 Jane Daniels comes in and shows he has,
00:27:56 can physically hold up to the NFL in interviews as well.
00:27:58 Yeah, he's gonna be right there with Drake May.
00:28:00 - I agree.
00:28:01 And again, I need to watch y'all 22,
00:28:02 and that's been my thing,
00:28:03 is I'm trying to get my hands on enough tape,
00:28:05 that I can definitively really see these guys
00:28:07 as quarterbacks, not as athletes,
00:28:08 not as guys with arm talent.
00:28:10 Like I honestly, like arm, having a good arm is great.
00:28:13 Obviously everybody wants somebody with an arm,
00:28:15 that just doesn't do it for me.
00:28:16 I need to see how you play the position,
00:28:18 how you process the game.
00:28:19 And from what I've seen,
00:28:20 Jane Daniels in terms of like consistency
00:28:22 and using his athleticism as a bonus rather than a crutch,
00:28:25 I think that it's like him in a class by himself.
00:28:28 And then it's like Caleb Williams and Drake May
00:28:30 as guys who are more physically, maybe,
00:28:32 I wouldn't even say more exciting,
00:28:33 'cause like you said, Drake May, I think is comparable.
00:28:35 But yeah, I absolutely agree that he could really sneak up
00:28:37 and make it a conversation.
00:28:39 Before we get to the previews for next week,
00:28:41 we're gonna send it over to our friends at FanDuel.

00:29:19 FanDuel, official partner of the NFL.
00:29:21 - All right, so for next week, championship week.
00:29:28 First one we're talking about Oregon versus Washington.
00:29:32 Now this is gonna be fun, little rematch action.
00:29:35 What do you got?
00:29:36 - So I like Washington in this game overall.
00:29:39 I think when it comes to the quarterbacks,
00:29:40 I kind of talked about this before with Bo Nix.
00:29:43 Can he, he, he, so I said his eight dot for the year,
00:29:48 seven yards per attempt, seven flat.
00:29:51 Against Washington in that game, it was six.
00:29:55 So I need to see him actually test this defense a little bit.
00:29:58 And I think the Washington defense
00:29:59 should force him to do that.
00:30:01 Come up, take away the short stuff,
00:30:03 put your speedy corners on the outside
00:30:05 against Troy Franklin, take away that nine route,
00:30:07 that goal ball and see if he can hit you on cut routes
00:30:10 over the middle and the intermediate
00:30:11 and deep parts of the field.
00:30:13 If he does that, okay,
00:30:15 we need to re-examine Bo Nix a little bit.
00:30:18 I just think that's kind of the story for him.
00:30:20 And I'm sure Oregon wants to come in
00:30:22 and run the offense they've been running.
00:30:25 Can Washington take that offense away?
00:30:28 And if they do, how does Bo Nix adjust?
00:30:31 That is the story of this game to me for Bo Nix.
00:30:33 For Michael Penix, he's already beat this defense once.
00:30:35 He beat him pretty good.
00:30:37 Can he beat him again?
00:30:38 And especially, you know, it's, it's what's at stake here.
00:30:41 If Washington wins,
00:30:42 they're going to make the college football playoff.
00:30:43 Oregon, see, like they could get it.
00:30:47 If Washington wins,
00:30:47 they're going to make the college football playoff.
00:30:49 So he probably gets a shot against the Georgia defense
00:30:53 or the Michigan defense.
00:30:54 Like what this is all about right now,
00:30:56 from a draft point of view,
00:30:57 I'm not saying this is how necessarily these guys view it,
00:30:59 but this is how we look at it.
00:31:00 Taylor, I say this a lot.
00:31:04 I want to tape against the good defenses.
00:31:05 I don't care what they do against these sub 100.
00:31:09 I don't care what Michael Penix
00:31:13 did against Arizona State.
00:31:14 I don't care what Jaden Daniels did against Vanderbilt.
00:31:17 I don't care what, you know,
00:31:20 Drake May did against,
00:31:22 I don't even remember if they played Pitt, but Pitt.
00:31:24 Like these bad-
00:31:24 - Unless it's like egregiously bad.
00:31:26 Unless it's egregiously bad against bad teams,
00:31:28 it's like, all right, whatever.
00:31:29 - You can't win against bad teams.
00:31:31 You can only lose as a prospect.
00:31:32 You can't win against bad teams.
00:31:33 You can only lose.
00:31:34 So can Michael Penix put himself in a position where,
00:31:38 yeah, if he gets to go against Georgia
00:31:41 and he has a good game,
00:31:42 that draft stock's going to keep going up, right?
00:31:45 Same goes for Bo Nix, but again,
00:31:46 Oregon might get in with the win, might not.
00:31:48 We'll see.
00:31:49 Michael Penix, can you go out, big game.
00:31:52 You don't have a home field advantage this time,
00:31:54 neutral site.
00:31:55 Vegas has Oregon as a nine and a half point favorite,
00:31:58 which is mind blowing to me.
00:32:00 Can Oregon win this game?
00:32:01 Yes.
00:32:02 Are they going to win by two scores?
00:32:03 That would be genuinely surprising.
00:32:05 I think a lot of people are caught up
00:32:06 in the Oregon mystique right now.
00:32:08 - I know where I'm going, my buddy.
00:32:10 - Right, so, exactly.
00:32:13 There's a lot of weird lines.
00:32:14 We'll get to some of these.
00:32:15 There's a lot of weird lines in these games.
00:32:17 - Okay.
00:32:18 - Can Michael Penix come out,
00:32:19 prove that what he did against Oregon last time is repeat?
00:32:23 Oh, and that's the other thing I meant to say this.
00:32:25 You don't always often get to see a college quarterback
00:32:27 face the same team twice in a season.
00:32:30 And that's obviously something you have to do in the NFL.
00:32:32 And we talk about this a lot in the NFL with the rookie wall.
00:32:35 Once teams get tape on a guy, it becomes a little easier.
00:32:39 Can Michael Penix beat a defense for a second time?
00:32:43 Can Michael Penix beat a good team for a second time?
00:32:46 You're talking about these are things
00:32:48 when we go and we debate,
00:32:50 what's going to be right now,
00:32:51 looks like we'll see where Daniels ends up
00:32:53 at that second tier of quarterbacks.
00:32:54 Daniels, Penix, Knicks, McCarthy, maybe yours.
00:32:59 These are the kinds of things they're gonna set them apart.
00:33:02 You know, NFL teams are gonna be like,
00:33:04 look at what he did the second time a defense saw him.
00:33:06 Look at what he did in this big stage in this neutral game.
00:33:08 If he gets a chance to get against Georgia,
00:33:10 hey, look at what he did against Georgia.
00:33:12 Look at what he did against Michigan.
00:33:14 So for Michael Penix, it's not so much
00:33:15 this game can help his stock, it can,
00:33:17 'cause again, facing that team for the second time,
00:33:19 but he can get himself in a position
00:33:21 to really accelerate his stock
00:33:23 with a good performance in the college football playoff.
00:33:26 - Yeah, so for Bo Nix, this is like,
00:33:28 you can legitimately, you know, make yourself some money,
00:33:30 actually move yourself up.
00:33:32 But yeah, I think for Penix, like you said,
00:33:34 it is a nice test to see how he does
00:33:36 in that kind of environment,
00:33:37 but it's gotta be more like the cherry on top,
00:33:39 'cause I feel like we pretty much know what he is.
00:33:41 All right, next up, we got Texas versus Oklahoma State.
00:33:45 What do you got for us?
00:33:46 - Yeah, so again, with Quinn, yours,
00:33:49 this is a really interesting one,
00:33:50 'cause there's been a lot of reports
00:33:52 that Quinn Ewers is gonna consider going back to school,
00:33:54 which I get, he was supposed to be a first round pick.
00:33:57 If you don't know Ewers' background,
00:33:58 he's, some people call him
00:34:00 the second highest rated recruit of all time.
00:34:03 So he was a five-star recruit,
00:34:06 but he was like a true five-star.
00:34:07 Trevor Lawrence is the only other guy
00:34:09 that's been graded as high as Quinn Ewers was graded
00:34:14 coming out of college, coming out of high school, that's it.
00:34:18 So this is a guy that came in with a massive pedigree,
00:34:20 monster expectations.
00:34:22 Look, he's been good,
00:34:24 but Quinn Ewers' story wasn't supposed to end
00:34:27 with him being a day two pick
00:34:28 and fighting for a starting quarterback job.
00:34:31 You know what I'm middling.
00:34:32 - What happened exactly?
00:34:34 Why the drop?
00:34:35 'Cause I am not familiar with his background.
00:34:38 - I mean, he's gotten hurt.
00:34:39 He's gotten hurt the last two years.
00:34:41 You know, last year when he played well,
00:34:43 this year it was kind of mixed results.
00:34:44 I think that game against Oklahoma hurt him.
00:34:49 So I understand him maybe wanting to go,
00:34:51 he has the talent.
00:34:52 And if he goes back to school next year
00:34:54 in a weak quarterback class,
00:34:55 he has a good year in 2024 at Texas or if he transfers,
00:34:59 yeah, he's gonna be a first round pick.
00:35:00 He'll have another shot at being a first round pick.
00:35:02 The thing is, let's say,
00:35:04 and I don't think he's gonna become a first round pick
00:35:06 based off what he does against Oklahoma State,
00:35:08 but it's kind of like what I just said
00:35:09 with Michael Penix.
00:35:10 He gets Texas this win,
00:35:14 and they sneak into the college football playoff,
00:35:16 and they play Georgia.
00:35:18 And he goes off against Georgia.
00:35:20 People are gonna look at that and say,
00:35:22 all right, this is the Quinn Ewers we saw
00:35:25 coming out of high school.
00:35:26 This is the first round pick we expected.
00:35:29 Now all of a sudden, maybe the narrative changes,
00:35:31 the stock changes.
00:35:32 He's starting to hear from NFL teams that,
00:35:34 oh yeah, we wouldn't use a first round pick on you.
00:35:36 And boom, he comes out of school.
00:35:38 The way I kind of phrased it,
00:35:39 and this is a little tongue in cheek,
00:35:40 can he convince himself to declare for the draft?
00:35:44 That's kind of what's at stake for him.
00:35:46 But the only way he's gonna do that,
00:35:47 the only way that happens is he wins this game
00:35:50 and Texas gets in the college football playoff.
00:35:52 And he's gotta have a good showing too.
00:35:53 This is not a good Oklahoma State defense.
00:35:55 They got to this point by scoring a ton of points.
00:35:58 I'm blanking on the running back's name, Ollie,
00:36:00 one of the best running backs in the nation,
00:36:02 not draft eligible.
00:36:03 He's a true sophomore,
00:36:04 hence why I don't have his name off the top of my head.
00:36:06 But yeah, I think that for Ewers,
00:36:09 there is something on the line here,
00:36:11 even if he's considering going back to school.
00:36:14 - Opportunities abound for Ewers.
00:36:15 We'll see if he can actually capitalize.
00:36:17 Next up, we got JJ McCarthy in Michigan against Iowa.
00:36:21 And we talked about this one earlier today in the locker room.
00:36:24 There's some pretty interesting context around this game
00:36:27 if you want to fill in the audience.
00:36:29 - Yeah, so I was like,
00:36:31 I was either having the best disappointing season
00:36:37 or the worst successful season in the history
00:36:39 of maybe not just college football or football, but sports.
00:36:42 So their offensive coordinator, Brian Ferentz,
00:36:47 they've had a really bad few years on offense.
00:36:50 And coming into this year, Ferentz needed to score,
00:36:52 or not Ferentz, the Iowa,
00:36:54 it could have been defensive points.
00:36:55 Iowa needed to score 250 points for Ferentz
00:36:58 to keep his job or his contract was gonna void.
00:37:00 They're gonna come up well short.
00:37:02 They've played in a lot of close games there.
00:37:04 I think outside the top 100 in scoring,
00:37:06 they've only crossed the 20 point threshold, I believe, once.
00:37:09 Four of their games have set the record
00:37:11 for the lowest scoring total, betting-wise,
00:37:13 in college football history.
00:37:14 Last week against Nebraska, the total was 24 and a half.
00:37:18 It hit.
00:37:19 I had that.
00:37:20 That was awesome.
00:37:21 But this is the kind of team we're talking about.
00:37:23 Yet they're ranked and they're playing
00:37:25 for the conference title
00:37:26 because their defense is that good.
00:37:28 So Iowa winning the Big 10 would be hilarious.
00:37:32 In a season that the fans hate,
00:37:34 they might win the conference championship,
00:37:36 which is the ultimate goal
00:37:37 for 99% of college football teams.
00:37:39 The college playoff is kind of like a cherry.
00:37:43 And it might knock Michigan out of the playoffs.
00:37:45 At same time, for J.J. McCarthy, right?
00:37:49 Here we go.
00:37:50 Another good defense.
00:37:51 A really good defense with NFL talent on the other side.
00:37:53 Cooper Dejean, their number one corner.
00:37:56 If he plays, I know he's banged up.
00:37:58 He might actually be out for the season.
00:37:59 I'm forgetting now.
00:38:00 But yeah, no, it's, this is another tough test
00:38:04 for J.J. McCarthy.
00:38:06 And if he wants to show that he can lead an NFL team,
00:38:09 you gotta beat Iowa.
00:38:10 You gotta beat Iowa good.
00:38:11 This game is a 23 and a half point spread.
00:38:14 It's the biggest of any championship game.
00:38:16 I don't know that Iowa's allowing 24 points.
00:38:19 The highest point total they've allowed all year
00:38:21 was it was 27 or 31 to Penn State.
00:38:24 Earlier in the year, they got, it was a blowout.
00:38:26 But Iowa doesn't allow a lot of points.
00:38:28 So Vegas thinks J.J. McCarthy can light up the scoreboard.
00:38:31 We'll see.
00:38:32 But it's another chance for him to kind of prove himself.
00:38:35 - Do you think he's gonna actually get the opportunity
00:38:37 or do you think Michigan's gonna play
00:38:39 a little more conservative like they did
00:38:40 a couple of weeks ago and just be like,
00:38:41 all right, we're gonna lean on a run game.
00:38:44 We're gonna sprinkle you in every once in a while.
00:38:46 Or do you think they're gonna say, all right,
00:38:48 you know, we have to maybe, we may have to throw the ball
00:38:50 just to make sure this is more competitive
00:38:52 against good defense.
00:38:53 How, where do you see that going?
00:38:54 - It's tough to say just 'cause they've gone both ways.
00:39:00 They took the ball out of his hands against Penn State.
00:39:02 They put it in his hands a little more against Ohio State.
00:39:05 I think it comes down to if it's close or not.
00:39:07 I think they may try to, if they can run the ball
00:39:09 and get up a couple of scores early, they'll keep running.
00:39:12 If Iowa can show something on offense,
00:39:14 which I wouldn't count on it,
00:39:16 or just their defense plays outstanding against the run,
00:39:20 then yeah, they're gonna have to throw the ball.
00:39:21 They're gonna have to do it.
00:39:22 - All right, next up, we got Carson Beck in Georgia
00:39:25 against Alabama.
00:39:27 As we said, Jalen Milrow came up with a crazy win last week.
00:39:31 So it should be a fun game.
00:39:32 I was talking to your co-host, Brian, about Carson Beck.
00:39:36 And he was saying like, this isn't just any, you know,
00:39:38 run-of-the-mill Georgia quarterback
00:39:40 that we usually think of,
00:39:41 where basically the team is carrying this guy
00:39:44 who makes plays every once in a while,
00:39:45 but he's not really the star.
00:39:46 'Cause Carson Beck is kind of in a different category.
00:39:49 What are your thoughts there
00:39:50 and how do you see this game playing out?
00:39:53 - Carson Beck's another really interesting one
00:39:55 because he was, like he's a four-star recruit,
00:39:58 but he wasn't a top 10 quarterback in his class.
00:40:01 Don't get me wrong, the guy's not a scrub.
00:40:04 He's not coming out of nowhere.
00:40:05 He's not a walk-on, but he's not,
00:40:06 a lot of these guys we're talking about,
00:40:08 May, Williams, Bo Nix,
00:40:11 even though he got there a little bit weird.
00:40:14 These are like five-star blue chip
00:40:17 from the time they were sophomores in high school,
00:40:20 were highly recruited, you know, quarterbacks.
00:40:23 That's not what Carson Beck is.
00:40:25 And when he stepped in, the expectation was
00:40:29 he was gonna basically pick up
00:40:30 where Stetson Bennett left off.
00:40:32 He was gonna be point guard, a distributor.
00:40:35 He was just gonna kind of be there and not mess up.
00:40:37 And he was just gonna kind of lead the offense.
00:40:39 But you saw Brock Bowers missed time,
00:40:42 Ladd McConkie missed time, they're two best receivers,
00:40:46 yet the offense still produced.
00:40:47 And Carson Beck was a big part of that.
00:40:50 So you see that happen.
00:40:51 Those guys come back, the offense really starts clicking.
00:40:54 And I'm like, all right, what's going on here?
00:40:56 So you go, you take a closer look at Carson Beck,
00:40:58 six-four, 225, throws a great ball.
00:41:03 Between his size, the way he throws the ball,
00:41:06 the mechanics, the release point,
00:41:08 he's throwing fastballs, he's throwing heaters.
00:41:11 There's a ton of zip on the ball.
00:41:12 He can get the ball down the field.
00:41:14 Now, his accuracy isn't great.
00:41:17 And that comes with time.
00:41:19 He's not as accurate as you'd like him to be.
00:41:22 I'm not gonna say he's unathletic,
00:41:25 but in the NFL, he's a pocket passer.
00:41:28 Like he can maneuver within the pocket
00:41:31 and he'll make the first rush or miss
00:41:33 if he sees him.
00:41:35 His legs are never gonna be a plus.
00:41:37 It's just not his game.
00:41:38 But the way you see him throw the ball,
00:41:43 okay, this may work.
00:41:44 He still may be able to play at that pro level.
00:41:49 So I don't know.
00:41:51 Like, I don't think he's a first-round pick.
00:41:53 I don't think he's a top 50 pick.
00:41:55 I don't think he's an obvious potential franchise guy.
00:41:59 Could he get there maybe down the road?
00:42:01 I'm not gonna say he can't,
00:42:02 but like, that's not the kind of guy you're looking at.
00:42:04 But coming into the year,
00:42:07 nobody was talking about him for the draft.
00:42:09 He's a redshirt junior.
00:42:10 Everybody thought he was going back to school.
00:42:11 Of course he would.
00:42:12 Now it's like, all right,
00:42:13 he's entering that fringe top 100 spot.
00:42:16 He goes out, beats up on an Alabama defense
00:42:20 that's playing as well as any defense
00:42:22 in the country right now.
00:42:24 You're gonna start hearing him talked about
00:42:25 as like a day two guy, as a top 100 guy,
00:42:27 as somewhere in that 50 to 100 range.
00:42:30 And you really don't have that guy in this draft.
00:42:33 Those guys who are supposed to be the day two,
00:42:35 you know, late day two, day three intermediate guys,
00:42:38 there's another one we'll get to in a bit,
00:42:40 but they've either ascended like Jaden Daniels did,
00:42:44 they're going back to school like we think Quinn Ewers is,
00:42:47 or they fell off.
00:42:49 Like guys like DJ Uyungle is a name
00:42:51 that comes to mind there.
00:42:53 Or KJ Jefferson entered the transfer portal.
00:42:55 He was kind of supposed to be in that range.
00:42:58 I'm blanking on other names.
00:42:59 I know there's a couple in there, but like you don't,
00:43:02 Cam Ward's probably gonna go,
00:43:04 Joe Milton sort of fell off.
00:43:06 So you don't have that guy.
00:43:08 Carson Beck can be that guy.
00:43:10 Let's see what he does against Alabama.
00:43:12 I'm not saying he's there yet,
00:43:13 but he does well against Alabama.
00:43:15 They're gonna go to the playoff one way or the other.
00:43:16 Let's see what he does against one of these playoff teams.
00:43:19 He's, if the Patriots are gonna do,
00:43:22 are gonna go, you know, wide receiver tackle
00:43:25 to start the draft and just say, you know what?
00:43:27 We're gonna give back to us one more year.
00:43:29 We're gonna bring in a developmental guy.
00:43:31 Carson Beck could kind of be that guy.
00:43:33 I don't think his ceiling's that high.
00:43:35 Like I think he's the,
00:43:37 and I know these names won't excite people,
00:43:38 but you gotta think of them as prospects,
00:43:40 not what they are now.
00:43:41 He has a chance to be like the Davis Mills
00:43:43 or the Kyle Trask of this draft.
00:43:46 If this was 15 years ago,
00:43:48 we're talking about him as a potential first round pick
00:43:50 because he's really good throwing the ball from the pocket.
00:43:53 Doesn't do much beyond that.
00:43:54 And you need to do that now,
00:43:55 but he is a guy that's gonna interest some NFL teams.
00:43:58 The question is how much?
00:43:59 Is it enough that he's willing to go to the draft
00:44:01 instead of going back to school?
00:44:03 Big performance against Alabama.
00:44:04 I think there's a good chance he enters the draft.
00:44:06 And I think there's a good chance he goes in the top 100.
00:44:09 - Yeah, this does sound like a big opportunity
00:44:11 'cause you talk about a guy who has great size,
00:44:12 is an accurate as a pocket passer.
00:44:14 Like you said a little while ago, that's fine.
00:44:16 We'll work on the accuracy, but now, you know,
00:44:18 if you're not able to move
00:44:20 and the accuracy is gonna be a problem, then okay,
00:44:22 where exactly do we wanna take you?
00:44:24 And yeah, we'll see how he does against Bama.
00:44:27 All right, last one of the previews
00:44:29 before we get to a little bonus section a little bit.
00:44:32 We got Tulane and Michael Pratt against SMU.
00:44:35 Now I'm not very familiar with Michael Pratt.
00:44:37 I don't watch a lot of Tulane football.
00:44:39 I'm sorry.
00:44:40 I see we do have some Tulane people in the chat though,
00:44:42 represent, but yeah,
00:44:44 break this one down for all of the uninitiated.
00:44:47 - Yeah, shout out Tulane.
00:44:48 I love New Orleans, a fun city.
00:44:50 So yeah, I wasn't super familiar with Pratt either.
00:44:53 I kind of did some more work on him this week.
00:44:55 So the first thing you notice with Pratt,
00:44:57 true senior four-year starter.
00:44:59 Well, he took over four games
00:45:02 into his freshman year at Tulane.
00:45:04 He's been the starter the whole time.
00:45:05 The last two years, Tulane's been a wagon.
00:45:07 They've arguably been the best group of five team
00:45:09 in college football, so that's like non-power five.
00:45:12 And, you know, with Pratt,
00:45:14 I think there's some things that stand out
00:45:16 with that experience.
00:45:17 He's made the most of that experience.
00:45:18 He sees the field really well.
00:45:20 I think he's a guy that's very comfortable in the pocket,
00:45:23 that sits really well in the pocket,
00:45:25 throws a really accurate ball,
00:45:28 throws like he puts it on guys.
00:45:30 Now, down the field, he doesn't quite have
00:45:34 that downfield presence you're maybe looking for.
00:45:38 And again, he's a better athlete than Beck.
00:45:40 He can move around a little bit, but he's not a guy
00:45:43 I don't think is gonna be like a plus plus.
00:45:45 You know, you're not gonna design the running game for him.
00:45:48 I look at him again as a prospect.
00:45:50 I see a lot of Bailey Zappi.
00:45:52 Now, Bailey Zappi had the numbers of Western Kentucky,
00:45:54 'cause that was that offense.
00:45:56 Pratt doesn't quite have those numbers,
00:45:58 but, you know, he can get back, make the read,
00:46:02 get the ball out quick, deliver the football.
00:46:04 And as a high-end backup potential, you know,
00:46:08 bridge starter in the NFL, like I think kind of,
00:46:10 he's in that again, him and Beck,
00:46:13 or he's kind of a little more low floor,
00:46:17 a high floor, low ceiling option to what Carson Beck is.
00:46:20 But some people are gonna really like him,
00:46:22 'cause they're gonna see a guy
00:46:23 that's played a lot of ball that, you know,
00:46:27 has that high football IQ and throws the ball
00:46:31 where the coaches wanna throw.
00:46:32 And some teams may look at that and say,
00:46:35 "Hey, you know, we can make this work.
00:46:37 "We'll go out, we'll get a good tight end,
00:46:39 "good intermediate receiving tight end,
00:46:41 "put a running back behind him."
00:46:42 It's not like the JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix thing,
00:46:45 where like, he's just gonna be a distributor.
00:46:48 You really need like pieces around him,
00:46:50 but there might be some teams that look at him and say,
00:46:52 "We're gonna bring him in.
00:46:54 "He's gonna be very valuable in the room
00:46:55 "because he's played a lot of football.
00:46:56 "He has that high football IQ,
00:46:58 "and we will see what he can turn into,
00:47:00 "but at the very worst, we would trust giving the offense
00:47:04 "to him if we're in a spot where we need a backup
00:47:06 "for three or four games or something like that."
00:47:08 So I know that doesn't sound like much, it's quarterback.
00:47:12 Those guys still go in the top 100,
00:47:14 definitely the top 150, sometimes in the top 100.
00:47:16 And again, you don't really have,
00:47:18 you have Caleb Williams is in tier one,
00:47:21 Drake Mays in like halfway between tier one and tier two
00:47:24 with Jayden Daniels, they're kind of passing each other.
00:47:27 You have the Penix, Bo Nix group,
00:47:30 JJ McCarthy's a wild card, and then that's kind of it.
00:47:34 And then you have these two,
00:47:35 and then a bunch of day three guys.
00:47:37 So somebody doesn't want to invest
00:47:38 a premium pick in a quarterback,
00:47:40 but doesn't want a guy that's a total flyer either.
00:47:43 I think that in this case, again, to put them together,
00:47:47 Beck is certainly one of those guys.
00:47:49 And I think Michael Pratt's a guy, different quarterback,
00:47:52 but a guy that's going to be in that window as well.
00:47:54 So I don't know, like for the Patriots,
00:47:57 these guys to me, I don't know that either of these guys
00:48:01 are the pick is like you're giving to us
00:48:02 the future of the franchise.
00:48:03 But if they want to try another year with Mack
00:48:06 and just have a better plan B than Bailey Zappi,
00:48:08 or just a new plan B, or if they want to do the,
00:48:12 you know, Washington, RG3, Kirk Cousins thing,
00:48:15 one in the first, one in the fourth,
00:48:17 fourth might be a little low.
00:48:18 Maybe they move up or maybe one of these guys falls.
00:48:20 But like, I think these are the guy,
00:48:22 I've seen a lot of people ask
00:48:23 about the RG3 Kirk Cousins thing.
00:48:25 Could the Patriots do that?
00:48:26 And look, they may need a new backup.
00:48:28 Bailey Zappi comes out this week and sucks.
00:48:29 And it's like, all right, he's not the guy.
00:48:31 You may need a draft starter and a backup.
00:48:33 It's not ideal, both those guys are rookies,
00:48:35 but I think these are the guys,
00:48:36 however you want to frame it,
00:48:38 Beck and Pratt are the guys you're looking at
00:48:40 kind of in that range.
00:48:41 - And when you need some.
00:48:43 - Although Beck, sorry, Beck could maybe move up
00:48:46 if he really plays well the next couple of games,
00:48:48 could potentially move up into that next year.
00:48:50 But I don't think, I'm talking about like,
00:48:52 you know, 400 yards, five touchdowns, no picks.
00:48:55 - Right, I'm saying if you need the deep cuts,
00:48:58 if you need the quarterbacks behind the quarterbacks
00:49:00 everybody else is talking about,
00:49:02 you come to the show and you come to Alex Barth.
00:49:04 And in the next section,
00:49:06 we're going to be previewing some guys who aren't quarterbacks.
00:49:09 Some of the best players who are draft eligible
00:49:11 that we're going to be seeing this weekend
00:49:12 in these championship games.
00:49:14 Before we get to that though,
00:49:15 going to throw it to our friends at SeatGeek.
00:49:17 We'll be back.

00:50:23 to download the app.
00:50:24 All right, so like I said, to close out,
00:50:33 some of the guys are gonna be playing
00:50:35 and are draft eligible,
00:50:36 who are gonna be playing this weekend
00:50:38 and should be on your radar.
00:50:40 First up, we got a couple big boys out of Georgia.
00:50:42 Alex, you got.
00:50:43 - Yeah, so again, I just remind people,
00:50:46 like it's not a lock the Patriots
00:50:47 are gonna take a quarterback.
00:50:49 And these are some of the,
00:50:50 these are like, look,
00:50:52 especially the SEC Championship, right?
00:50:53 You want to know the draft eligible players to watch.
00:50:56 Look at the depth chart.
00:50:57 It's all of them.
00:50:58 But these are the, you know, first round picks
00:51:01 you want to get yourself familiar with.
00:51:02 From Georgia, Brock Bowers,
00:51:04 the tight end we've talked about.
00:51:06 Real do it all tight end.
00:51:07 There's a reason he's drawn comparisons to Gronk.
00:51:09 I think it might be a little early for that stuff,
00:51:11 but he can catch, he can run routes.
00:51:14 He's got the ball in his hands.
00:51:15 He can block, you know, he's gonna be a top 10 pick.
00:51:18 And then Amarius Mims is their starting tackle.
00:51:20 I think with Mims,
00:51:22 if the Patriots don't go alter for Sean,
00:51:25 but we talked about this thing
00:51:26 where they maybe trade down a little bit
00:51:28 and trade back up into the first round.
00:51:30 Amarius Mims is a guy that is gonna be,
00:51:33 and we'll talk about another guy
00:51:34 that's gonna be in this conversation as well.
00:51:36 But Amarius Mims is a guy
00:51:38 you're gonna potentially talk about.
00:51:39 Sort of situation, 6'7", 340.
00:51:42 He's mostly played on the right side for Georgia,
00:51:45 but probably, you know,
00:51:46 maybe bring him along as a left tackle.
00:51:49 So for all you tackle people,
00:51:50 if it's not alter for Seanu
00:51:52 and they might go a little lower,
00:51:54 well, again, so if it's not, you know,
00:51:56 if you want them to take a quarterback
00:51:58 or take Marvin Harrison Jr.
00:51:59 and still get a first round tackle,
00:52:00 Amarius Mims is one potential option
00:52:03 that we'll be playing this week.
00:52:04 And there's another guy in this game,
00:52:06 Taylor from Alabama's, JC Latham.
00:52:09 Latham right now is ranked a little higher.
00:52:11 He's a fringe top 10 pick.
00:52:12 So this one may be a bit of a stretch
00:52:13 if they're gonna do trade down, trade up.
00:52:15 But Latham's just an absolute mauler.
00:52:18 I mean, he is a Patriots tackle through and through.
00:52:22 He is a 6'6", 360.
00:52:25 Plays, I assume, look, I bet he's a very nice kid.
00:52:30 Plays like an a-hole, plays with a mean streak.
00:52:33 - We love that.
00:52:34 - He won't let guys get his hands on him.
00:52:37 Yeah, I'm a fan of his.
00:52:38 I actually think there's a chance.
00:52:40 We talked about guys kind of jumping tiers, right?
00:52:42 So there's Alton Fashano at the top.
00:52:44 Latham, it would not surprise me
00:52:46 if he works his way into that group.
00:52:48 And we're talking about three elite tackles instead of two.
00:52:50 I don't know that we're there right now,
00:52:51 but I think there's a real possibility we could get there.
00:52:53 So maybe Latham's a little unrealistic
00:52:56 instead of in terms of the trade down, trade up.
00:52:58 But definitely, guy, if you want the Patriots
00:53:00 to take a tackle in the first round,
00:53:02 this is a guy you should know about.
00:53:04 - Yeah, I feel every single draft, podcast, show,
00:53:07 whatever, everybody's like, there's a ton of good tackles.
00:53:10 We're gonna see more tackles going in the first round
00:53:12 than we have in a long time.
00:53:13 It feels like maybe not now more than ever.
00:53:16 You're not finding athletic left tackles all over the place,
00:53:19 but it feels like there's a pretty desperate need
00:53:21 all over the league.
00:53:22 I mean, I'm really curious about these guys
00:53:24 'cause like you said, they're both right tackles.
00:53:26 Patriots, God willing, are gonna re-sign Mike Iwenu,
00:53:29 and he's your right tackle.
00:53:30 So I am curious if these are guys
00:53:32 who could switch over to the left side
00:53:33 and be just as good just because they fit the mold
00:53:36 of a Patriots right tackle.
00:53:37 Ginormous guys who can just move people
00:53:40 and be assets in the ground game.
00:53:42 But these guys also have the athleticism
00:53:45 where they can hold up on pass protection.
00:53:46 So I'm really curious how that's gonna go.
00:53:48 While we're already on Alabama,
00:53:49 let's go with Dallas Turner.
00:53:51 Give us a little preview on him, the edge rusher.
00:53:54 - Yeah, so I mean, look, Alabama edge rushers,
00:53:57 it's one of the spots,
00:53:58 and they're known for a lot of spots
00:53:59 producing a ton of talent,
00:54:00 but this guy stepped into Will Anderson's role.
00:54:03 They had two of them last year.
00:54:05 It was really unbelievable play.
00:54:07 Real chance, I think, Dallas Turner
00:54:08 to be the first defensive player
00:54:09 off the board in this draft.
00:54:11 And look, we can't rule out,
00:54:12 especially if Bill Belichick comes back,
00:54:14 them taking defense first with their first pick.
00:54:17 And Josh Huche is gonna be gone.
00:54:19 Anthony Jennings might be gone.
00:54:20 Matthew Judon's in his 30s,
00:54:22 entering last year with his contract,
00:54:23 coming off an injury.
00:54:25 They need an edge rusher.
00:54:25 I'm not saying they should use their first pick on it,
00:54:28 but if they feel that way,
00:54:30 Dallas Turner's a hell of a player.
00:54:33 He looks like Will Anderson.
00:54:35 He clearly learned a lot from Will Anderson.
00:54:38 They're similar guys.
00:54:39 Freak athletes, very flexible, high motor.
00:54:44 Anything you want from an edge rusher,
00:54:46 Dallas Turner's gonna give you.
00:54:48 So another guy to watch,
00:54:50 and I just think we'll see how much,
00:54:51 they move around a little bit,
00:54:52 we'll see how much he lines up on Amarius Mims,
00:54:57 because that's one of those spots where when you go,
00:55:00 if Amarius Mims can put out good tape against Dallas Turner,
00:55:04 you're gonna look at that and say,
00:55:05 here's what he's doing against the guy
00:55:06 who's probably gonna be a stud in the NFL.
00:55:08 Like, how does he hold up in that matchup?
00:55:10 I think that pairing specifically,
00:55:13 again, we'll see how much it happens.
00:55:14 They move their front around a little bit,
00:55:15 but Dallas Turner on Amarius Mims
00:55:18 is certainly a matchup to watch when we get it.
00:55:20 - Yeah, and the Patriots at edge position
00:55:23 is a much more glaring area need that people realize.
00:55:25 You mentioned Judon, you got Josh Huche,
00:55:28 who did suffer an injury,
00:55:29 but like really hasn't been the force
00:55:31 that you would hope from somebody
00:55:32 who is strictly a pass rusher pretty much.
00:55:34 Sometimes drops on the cover, sometimes plays run.
00:55:36 Really that's his bread and butter.
00:55:38 And you've seen what happened to the Patriots pass rush
00:55:40 once Matt Judon went out.
00:55:41 So, edge rushers are one of the highest paid positions
00:55:44 in football.
00:55:45 So if you can get one of those guys on a rookie contract,
00:55:46 as well as like a quarterback and a receiver or a tackle,
00:55:49 you're in good shape.
00:55:50 So definitely one to look for.
00:55:51 Now we're gonna go to FSU with two guys
00:55:54 who are three athletes at the receiver position,
00:55:57 but one is a wide receiver,
00:55:58 and one is more of an athlete.
00:56:00 Tell us about Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson.
00:56:02 - So Keon Coleman is in the conversation
00:56:07 for that wide receiver two spot
00:56:08 behind Marvin Harrison Jr.
00:56:10 And it's really gonna come down to,
00:56:11 I'm gonna combine a couple of games
00:56:12 you're gonna talk about here.
00:56:14 Coleman, Roma Dunze, and then Malik Nabors,
00:56:17 who's not playing this weekend,
00:56:18 but he's also in the conversation,
00:56:19 like who is the wide receiver two?
00:56:22 I think it's a bit of a flavor thing.
00:56:23 I think they're all very good players.
00:56:24 What do you want?
00:56:26 Keon Coleman is, we were talking earlier,
00:56:28 there's something Andre Hopkins in his game.
00:56:30 Like he's at his core,
00:56:32 he's a big body, true X, jump ball, 50/50 receiver,
00:56:36 but he's more athletic than most of those guys are.
00:56:38 He's a guy that has an ability to create
00:56:40 after the catch with the ball in his hands.
00:56:42 He's a better route runner than you'd expect.
00:56:43 I think Roma Dunze, you want a technician,
00:56:46 you want a guy that's gonna run excellent routes.
00:56:49 You want a guy that reads the ball really well
00:56:51 at the catch point.
00:56:52 You want a guy that can get himself open
00:56:54 with route running and body control.
00:56:56 That's Roma Dunze.
00:56:58 Kinda reminds me a little bit of Stefan Diggs,
00:57:00 watching him, I think kind of similar players.
00:57:02 Or do you just want an athlete?
00:57:04 Do you want the guy that can run the fastest,
00:57:06 jump the highest, has the most agility,
00:57:09 just the guy that you're gonna mold, right?
00:57:11 That's Malik Neighbors from LSU.
00:57:13 So that whole battle is kind of playing out
00:57:17 through these next couple of games,
00:57:19 and we'll see if Neighbors plays in the bowl game.
00:57:22 I'm curious to ask you,
00:57:23 I don't know how much you've watched Coleman,
00:57:27 just 'cause I don't know how much you watched
00:57:29 Jordan Travis, who unfortunately,
00:57:31 obviously is out for the area, that serious leg injury.
00:57:34 Like where you're at with those three guys,
00:57:36 and specifically for the Patriots.
00:57:38 'Cause like I want a Dunze,
00:57:39 I want the Patriots to get their own Stefan Diggs,
00:57:42 'cause we've seen what Stefan Diggs can do
00:57:43 for a quarterback.
00:57:45 Off the field stuff, brother tweeting aside, right?
00:57:48 (laughing)
00:57:49 Like you said, what he did to JC Jackson.
00:57:51 But I'm really curious where you are on that.
00:57:53 'Cause I feel like,
00:57:54 I love seeing how people break down
00:57:57 the wider receiver two conversation.
00:57:58 'Cause everybody I read has a slightly different take on it.
00:58:02 It's really fascinating to me.
00:58:04 - Yeah, so I think Rome,
00:58:05 like I think we talked about it.
00:58:06 He reminds me of DeAndre Hopkins.
00:58:08 Like just because he's that guy who can stick it X,
00:58:11 and he can win one on one.
00:58:12 - Rome or Coleman?
00:58:14 - Well, I honestly, kind of both.
00:58:17 So they're a little different.
00:58:19 So with Rome, I think he's like the DeAndre Hopkins type
00:58:21 where you stick him an X
00:58:22 and you want him to win one on one.
00:58:23 But you can also put him in the slot
00:58:25 if you're an empty or something like that,
00:58:26 where you can create some other matchups
00:58:27 just because he's so good technically
00:58:29 and also has the physical gifts.
00:58:31 Keon Coleman, honestly reminds me of Nikhil Harry.
00:58:34 And I think part of it's like the size.
00:58:36 No, but like you just-
00:58:37 - Okay, you're every Patriots fan.
00:58:39 I know he has a prospect, but.
00:58:42 - Right, and like Nikhil Harry,
00:58:43 if he was who we thought he was.
00:58:44 Like at the speed that you saw
00:58:46 when he was really doing great in college,
00:58:48 if that translated to the NFL,
00:58:49 or it was just, you know,
00:58:51 he actually had it to begin with.
00:58:52 That's what it reminds me of.
00:58:53 Because you see the pot returning skills from Keon Coleman.
00:58:56 That was one of the things where I'm like,
00:58:57 okay, you can use this guy in different ways.
00:58:59 And then the work at the catch point,
00:59:01 like whatever you want to say about Nikhil,
00:59:03 he was always dominant at the catch point.
00:59:04 He didn't get a lot of opportunities
00:59:06 because of the Patriot scheme.
00:59:07 If you go back and look at like his deep targets,
00:59:10 you're not seeing it like go off his hands or anything.
00:59:12 Like he had the size and he won those battles.
00:59:14 But I think Keon Coleman is someone,
00:59:16 and again, like this is why I don't want to get too deep
00:59:18 in the weeds because I haven't studied these guys enough
00:59:19 to just give confident takes.
00:59:21 I'm like, this is who he is.
00:59:22 But in the games that I've seen,
00:59:24 it's just the ability to catch point, the athleticism,
00:59:26 the explosiveness and the size.
00:59:28 They're the things that you were sold on with Nikhil Harry,
00:59:30 where he's not just, you know,
00:59:31 this guy who's great before and at the catch point.
00:59:34 He can also make stuff happen with the ball in his hands.
00:59:36 I think that's really exciting.
00:59:37 I feel like after the catch stuff,
00:59:39 maybe from what I've seen, he might have the edge on Rome,
00:59:42 but again, could definitely study more.
00:59:45 And then who else were we mentioning?
00:59:46 Well, I guess-
00:59:47 - Let's go back to the Florida State guys real quick
00:59:49 on Coleman and then Johnny Wilson, who you talked about.
00:59:52 Johnny Wilson's a really interesting player.
00:59:54 He's 6'7", 240, supposedly ran a 442 in high school.
00:59:59 So you look at it and you're like,
01:00:00 this guy's bigger at a tight end.
01:00:02 He's faster than most wide receivers.
01:00:04 Why isn't he in the conversation?
01:00:06 He can't catch.
01:00:07 He's had a massive problem with drops this year.
01:00:10 So, you know, can you coach that out of him?
01:00:12 Maybe, but he's still a fascinating player.
01:00:14 I think Florida State's in this really interesting position
01:00:17 where they're undefeated.
01:00:18 If they beat Louisville,
01:00:19 they'll be an unbeaten conference champion
01:00:22 that should probably get in,
01:00:23 but they're on a backup quarterback.
01:00:25 Will the committee put them in at risk of a bad game?
01:00:28 And I think, no disrespect, I'm blanking on his name,
01:00:31 to Florida State's backup quarterback,
01:00:33 but he's not Jordan Travis.
01:00:34 And I think these wide receivers,
01:00:37 and really, the tight end, Jaheim Bell,
01:00:39 who's a projected top 100 pick,
01:00:40 Trey Benson's their running back.
01:00:43 He's gonna be one of the first running backs
01:00:44 off the board this year.
01:00:46 They've gotta show that they make the offense go.
01:00:48 And I think it's really on Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson
01:00:52 to carry, against a good Louisville defense,
01:00:55 to carry this team into that college football playoff spot.
01:00:58 - Yep, and while we're on the topic of receivers,
01:01:00 we might as well get to Troy Franklin.
01:01:01 I feel like he's gonna remind people of Taekwon
01:01:04 because he's tall, he's thin, and he's fast.
01:01:06 - He reminds me of Taekwon.
01:01:07 - Right, but here's the thing, he's actually elusive.
01:01:09 Like, what Taekwon never had
01:01:11 was that you give him a bubble screen
01:01:12 and he's gonna like make guys miss.
01:01:14 That was never him.
01:01:14 It's more you give him a lane and he'll explode through it.
01:01:17 But he wasn't one of those guys
01:01:18 who was gonna beat you horizontally
01:01:20 or like really twitched up.
01:01:21 And additionally, he didn't have the same prowess,
01:01:24 I think, against press coverage,
01:01:25 where you don't want Troy Franklin living outside for sure,
01:01:28 but he's more competitive in those situations
01:01:30 than a Taekwon Thornton.
01:01:31 I haven't watched his route running closely enough,
01:01:33 so I don't wanna compare them in that vein.
01:01:34 But if you're talking about like,
01:01:36 at the very least a gadget guy
01:01:37 who at least you like scheme touches for him
01:01:39 and kind of make his life easier,
01:01:41 I think you're gonna get much more out of Troy Franklin
01:01:43 than you are currently getting
01:01:44 or even could possibly get out of a Taekwon Thornton
01:01:47 as well as having the vertical ability.
01:01:49 So I'm curious what your thoughts are on him
01:01:51 and where the differences are
01:01:53 and just as him as his own player where he stands.
01:01:56 - I worry about, again, just for the Patriots,
01:02:01 you know, that thin, lanky, speedy receiver.
01:02:05 Let somebody else develop.
01:02:07 Let's, on Troy Franklin, that's where I'm at with the Patriots.
01:02:09 - I agree, by the way, I agree.
01:02:11 - They just tried with this guy.
01:02:12 I think, you know, to me,
01:02:14 if you're in that range of the draft
01:02:15 and we can add some of the Texas guys here too,
01:02:19 we're kind of in that next year,
01:02:20 late first round, early second round receivers.
01:02:22 Xavier Worthy from Texas who, yes, is tall and skinny,
01:02:26 but I just, I think he's a much better player
01:02:28 than Troy Franklin is.
01:02:29 He's such a good route runner.
01:02:31 He's so good at the catch point.
01:02:32 A.D. Mitchell, also from Texas, is, you know, 6'4", 216.
01:02:37 He is that true X guy that transferred from Georgia,
01:02:40 has some of that SEC pedigree.
01:02:43 Go after, like, again, to go back to Worthy,
01:02:47 I feel like Troy Franklin wins with his speed.
01:02:50 He can do other things, but he has to win with his speed.
01:02:53 And those guys, especially coming from the Pac-12,
01:02:55 which is the slowest conference,
01:02:56 as Evan Lazar will tell you,
01:02:58 they have trouble translating to the NFL res.
01:03:02 Worthy can win with his quickness.
01:03:04 He can win with his route running.
01:03:06 Mitchell can win with his release.
01:03:08 He can win with his size.
01:03:10 He can win with his strength.
01:03:11 Those are the kind of guys I want to see the Patriots
01:03:13 investing in.
01:03:14 I don't need just the true burst burner.
01:03:18 They just did that, and it didn't work.
01:03:19 And honestly, I don't know about that guy.
01:03:22 I think that guy's a really good number two or three.
01:03:24 I think if your number one receiver
01:03:26 is gonna win on speed primarily,
01:03:28 he has to be Tyreek Hill.
01:03:30 Like, he has to be so freaking fast.
01:03:32 - And even Tyreek doesn't just win with speed.
01:03:34 It's that his speed is insane,
01:03:36 but, like, even he's not an actual one-trick pony.
01:03:38 - So I don't think Troy, shocker, hot take,
01:03:41 I don't think Troy Franklin's Tyreek Hill.
01:03:42 I don't think he's six to be Tyreek Hill.
01:03:44 So yeah, let another team take a shot on him.
01:03:48 - Totally fair.
01:03:48 All right, we're gonna go back to Washington
01:03:49 with our last player, Braylon Trice, edge rusher.
01:03:53 What do we got?
01:03:54 - Big time, like, assuming it's the current Patriots
01:03:58 making the pick, like, big time Patriots draft pick.
01:04:01 Three down, stout, edge setting, no nonsense,
01:04:06 bold rushing, yeah, exactly, exactly.
01:04:09 Kinda reminds me, kinda reminds me of Keon White.
01:04:11 I think he's more polished than,
01:04:14 so Keon White, right, was a tight end move over.
01:04:16 I think Braylon Trice is a better prospect,
01:04:18 coming from a better program,
01:04:20 more polished at the position, more experience, all of that,
01:04:24 but just, like, a big, imposing presence on the edge.
01:04:27 Probably, I don't wanna say he's a better athlete
01:04:29 than Keon White, but, like, he's quicker.
01:04:30 He can be more of that backside pass rusher
01:04:33 if you need him to be.
01:04:34 That's probably not his ideal role in the NFL,
01:04:37 but I look at what he does against the run.
01:04:38 I look at what he does as an imposing presence.
01:04:41 I don't really know where the Patriots pick him,
01:04:43 'cause he's supposed to be a mid-first round pick,
01:04:45 so I just don't know how that fits in their plans,
01:04:48 but you never know, and hey,
01:04:51 if you like watching offensive linemen get bullied,
01:04:53 if you like watching offensive linemen
01:04:54 get their lunch handed to 'em,
01:04:56 you'll enjoy watching Braylon Trice.
01:04:58 So, maybe not as much of Patriots
01:05:00 as some of these other guys,
01:05:01 but if you wanna have fun watching the game,
01:05:04 check out number eight, you might enjoy yourself.
01:05:07 - I do think, honestly, the Patriots,
01:05:08 I mean, it's so hard to project, like,
01:05:10 who is a good fit or not,
01:05:12 because we don't know who's gonna be
01:05:12 running this team next year,
01:05:14 but in terms of those big, stout guys
01:05:16 who can really play all three downs,
01:05:18 I think Keon White, he has that potential,
01:05:20 hasn't quite lived up to it yet, obviously,
01:05:22 that was the whole thing with him,
01:05:23 and then you think of a Dietrich Wise,
01:05:25 who, you know, he can play every down,
01:05:27 he has the scheme versatility,
01:05:28 but he's also getting up there in age,
01:05:29 and as a guy, I would like to have somebody
01:05:31 who could probably take over
01:05:32 and kind of be in that role.
01:05:33 Osam Roberts is also there as well,
01:05:35 but not the same pedigree of player,
01:05:37 but I think this is our longest show yet.
01:05:39 - I had a blast, thank you so much, Alex.
01:05:41 - Excellent.
01:05:42 - What do you got coming out this week?
01:05:43 Let the people know.
01:05:44 - I'll have, I don't know when it's dropping,
01:05:46 'cause there's gonna be a video element with it,
01:05:48 we gotta get done.
01:05:48 I will have a championship weekend breakdown,
01:05:51 just like this, we'll get into
01:05:53 some of the top quarterbacks,
01:05:54 some of the top other players,
01:05:55 some of the not top players at some of these programs,
01:05:58 there's a corner from Toledo everybody should know about,
01:06:01 and also some Army-Navy preview stuff,
01:06:03 if people wanna start getting into that.
01:06:05 Went to the press conference today,
01:06:06 and you wanna talk about football guys,
01:06:08 the way the coaches talked about this game was really fun,
01:06:10 so I'll have something on that too.
01:06:12 And catch 22 tomorrow with Evan Lazar.
01:06:14 - Great stuff as always from you, buddy.
01:06:16 Thank you so much once again.
01:06:18 Thank you all so much for watching.
01:06:20 Take care of yourselves, take care of each other,
