00:00 Well, the discovery, first of all, it's a mystery.
00:03 It's a mystery to be solved.
00:04 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the creepiest unsolved
00:09 mysteries that occurred between 2010 and 2020.
00:13 Theories on how a plane could vanish into thin air have gripped the world for almost
00:17 a decade, but so far, none have been proven.
00:19 Number 10.
00:20 Clowning Around.
00:22 Remember the infamous clown sightings of 2016?
00:25 2016 has been the year of the creepy clown craze. Reports from all over the country of
00:31 people dressed as clowns standing outside of buildings or along roads in the dead of
00:35 night struck a very real fear in the hearts of those just trying to live their lives.
00:40 But the craze actually began six years earlier.
00:43 Back in 2010, two photos appeared on Facebook that sent chills through those who saw them.
00:48 They showed a large clown in the middle of the forest, first leaning to its left and
00:52 then appearing right in front of the camera.
00:55 The photos were posted by one Jarrett Young, who claimed that he saw them on his game camera.
01:00 None of these situations have actually involved anyone dressed up like a clown.
01:04 They've all been social media pranks, online ruses.
01:08 But Snopes later contacted Young and discovered that he was just 10 years old when he uploaded
01:13 the photos.
01:14 According to Young, he was just trolling and probably got the pictures off of Google.
01:18 Unfortunately, the real source of the photos has never been determined.
01:23 People in more than two dozen states have reported seeing the creepy characters. In
01:27 most cases, it's all a hoax, but it has turned serious in others.
01:30 Number 9. Radio Bursts from Space
01:33 The field of astronomy closed out the decade with a startling discovery. Canadian researchers
01:38 found a repeating pattern of fast radio bursts, or FRBs, coming from space.
01:43 Fast radio bursts were only first detected 13 years ago from immense explosions millions
01:48 of light years away. The signals raced through the galaxies in the nebulae, stretching as
01:53 they go.
01:54 According to the researchers, the pattern occurred every 16 days, with one burst every
01:58 hour for four days, before radio silence, no pun intended, for the next 12.
02:04 The signals have now been detected over four days, and then silence for 12 days.
02:09 The pattern would then repeat. But that's not all. Another FRB was detected that lasted
02:14 three seconds, with high bursts of radiation occurring within this three-second window
02:19 every 0.2 seconds. But, creepily repetitive as they are, and while we still don't know
02:25 for sure what's causing all of these FRBs, it's most likely they're coming from distant
02:30 neutron stars.
02:31 Delaney says a more likely scenario is a binary star system, with a signal coming from one
02:36 star that is lost temporarily when it orbits behind the other.
02:40 Number 8. Arkansas Bird Deaths
02:43 On December 31, 2010, an estimated 5,000 blackbirds died and fell to the ground in the Arkansas
02:49 city of Beebe.
02:51 In a matter of hours on New Year's Eve, thousands of birds fell from the sky to their death.
02:56 The image is certainly biblical, but it actually has a very reasonable explanation. Experts
03:01 theorize that New Year's fireworks startled and disoriented the birds, causing them to
03:06 fly into objects like houses and trees.
03:09 Dozens of U.S. Environmental Service crews spent the day picking up the birds, walking
03:14 between homes, and climbing on people's roofs with protective hazmat suits and breathing
03:19 masks.
03:20 Creepy story for sure, but it didn't end there. The very next year, someone seemingly killed
03:25 a further 200 birds by setting off fireworks in their roost. The exact same thing happened,
03:30 with the fireworks causing the birds to flee and slam into various obstacles. Unfortunately,
03:36 the mysterious perpetrator has never been identified.
03:39 Experts say something like fireworks likely scared the animal, but it's impossible to
03:43 know for sure.
03:44 Number 7. Tragic and Terrifying Phone Call
03:48 You never want to wake up to a dramatic voicemail. Unfortunately, that's what happened to
03:52 Corrine McCabe when she woke on the morning of September 7, 2015.
03:57 Authorities confirmed the disturbing middle-of-the-night call came from Henry McCabe's cell phone.
04:02 It was Labor Day, September 7, at 2.28 in the morning.
04:06 McCabe was in California when she received a voicemail from her husband Henry, who was
04:10 at home in Minnesota. McCabe heard a series of strange growling noises, followed by the
04:15 sound of Henry's voice, who claimed that he had been shot. The voicemail ends with
04:20 another voice saying, "Stop it."
04:22 I tried to picture where he was, what it might have been like, what circumstances would have
04:31 made him sound like that.
04:35 The story got even weirder on November 2, when McCabe's body was found in Rush Lake.
04:41 It did not bear evidence of a shooting, and an autopsy claimed that he had drowned.
04:46 Now, police will continue investigating Henry McCabe's death, along with New Bright Police.
04:50 They also confirmed there were no wounds or marks found on McCabe's body.
04:55 It's unclear who the other speaker was, or why McCabe claimed that he had been shot.
05:01 Number 6. Submarines in Sweden
05:03 To understand this story, we have to go back to the Cold War. Between 1966 and 1990, Sweden
05:10 had to deal repeatedly with foreign submarines.
05:13 The search in the Baltic Sea, less than 30 miles from Stockholm, began on Friday and
05:18 reawakened memories of the final years of the Cold War, when Sweden repeatedly sought
05:24 out suspect Soviet submarines along its coast.
05:27 The most famous incident occurred in October 1981, when the Soviet sub U-137 ran aground
05:33 near Karlskrona. Russia claimed that the presence of U-137 was an accident following a navigational
05:40 error. But there were many further sightings over the years, and the origin of the submarines
05:45 has never fully been proven.
05:47 Swedish defence analysts have speculated that a foreign submarine may have been in the area
05:52 to replace old spy equipment.
05:55 These subs have usually been attributed to Russia, but no one knows if they all are.
05:59 And even if they were all Russian, no one knows what they were doing in Stockholm. But
06:04 we can guess.
06:05 Rear Admiral Anders Grenstad told a news conference the sightings had taken place in an area that
06:10 is of interest to a foreign power, but added he was not in a position to link the observed
06:16 activity to any particular nation.
06:19 Number 5. Creepy surveillance video
06:21 When it comes to creepy surveillance footage, the tragic murder of Missy Beavers has to
06:26 be mentioned. Beavers was killed inside Midlothian's Creekside Church of Christ on the morning
06:31 of April 18, 2016.
06:33 Beavers was preparing to teach a fitness class inside a Midlothian church on the morning
06:38 of April 18, 2016.
06:39 A fitness instructor, her body was found by a student shortly after 5 a.m. Police checked
06:45 the church's surveillance system and were met with an eerie sight. A person could be
06:49 seen walking the halls in a full SWAT outfit while periodically breaking glass and opening
06:55 doors.
06:56 The killer recorded on surveillance video roaming the halls of the church with a distinctive
07:00 gait and dressed in police-style garb.
07:03 It's believed that this was the person who killed Beavers. The creepy footage was released
07:07 to the public in hopes of identifying the perp, but to no avail. They have never been
07:12 identified and the case remains unsolved.
07:15 I know personally they have great investigators still working on the case. There's still a
07:19 lot of manpower to go into this case and I think the only way it will be solved is with
07:24 the community's help.
07:26 Number 4. North Korean Ghost Ships. Since 2011, many old boats have washed ashore on
07:32 the coasts of Japan.
07:34 North Korean boats, sometimes called ghost ships, keep washing up on these beaches.
07:39 While this phenomenon likely began prior to 2011, that was the year that record keeping
07:43 began. Since then, hundreds of empty boats have washed up, with 156 appearing in 2019
07:50 alone. These ghost ships are often very old and without modern amenities like GPS.
07:55 The sad fact is that for every dead North Korean who washes up here, there are probably
08:01 many more sailors who never make it to dry land.
08:04 It makes for a creepy visual, and we don't really know why it's happening. That said,
08:09 we have a very good idea. The leading theory is that the boats belong to North Korean fishermen
08:15 who venture out to sea and sadly perish in the dangerous waters. But there's no certainty.
08:21 Why they're going so far out to sea and what's happening on board remains a mystery.
08:26 What's known is that these boats are washing up on Japan's shores in record numbers, and
08:31 people here are spooked.
08:33 Number 3. Cicada 3301. There have been a number of internet mysteries throughout the years,
08:39 but none quite like Cicada 3301.
08:42 Very good, you have done well. There are three prime numbers associated with the original
08:48 final dot jpeg image. 3301 is one of them.
08:53 The name refers to a series of puzzles that were postage to 4chan every January between
08:59 2012 and 2014. While the first two were eventually cracked, the third remains unsolved. The user
09:06 who uploaded the puzzles went silent in 2017, and nothing new has since been reported.
09:11 Its last verified message refuted ownership of puzzles released by copycats.
09:16 It's unclear who exactly this mystery user was, or even if it was one singular user.
09:21 Multiple theories have also been made regarding the nature of the puzzles.
09:25 The song you hear is one of Cicada's riddles.
09:34 Some believe that it was all a harmless internet game, while others think they served as some
09:38 kind of secret recruitment tool related to cyber security.
09:43 Number 2. Havana Syndrome. Mysterious health scares are very creepy, and that's what's
09:48 been happening to American government officials all over the world for years.
09:52 Tina, Kate, and Doug didn't know it then, but they were among the first victims of a
09:57 still unexplained phenomenon that has come to be known as Havana Syndrome.
10:01 It's known as Havana Syndrome, and it's caused hundreds of people to report signs of illness,
10:06 which range in severity from a simple headache to full-blown cognitive dysfunction.
10:11 I was falling over in my room. I thought I was going to vomit. I was incredibly nauseous.
10:15 I had this incredible ringing in my ears, and I knew something was really wrong with
10:19 me.
10:20 The name is taken from Havana, Cuba, which is where the first cases of sickness were
10:24 reported in 2016. Since then, over 1,000 cases have been reported. No one knows what's causing
10:30 the illness, although, albeit controversially, it's believed to be some kind of mass psychological
10:36 issue.
10:37 Seven different intelligence agencies completed a review of the case in 2023, concluding that
10:42 foreign adversaries were not involved.
10:45 Found it, quote, "very unlikely" a foreign adversary was responsible, "very unlikely"
10:50 a weapon or any device purposely or accidentally caused the symptoms, and there's not even
10:55 a consistent set of physical injuries that could be characterized as Havana Syndrome.

11:17 Number 1. Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
11:21 A mystery that has endured in the popular consciousness, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
11:26 vanished on March 8, 2014.
11:28 The Beijing-bound flight departed Kuala Lumpur and was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6.30
11:33 a.m. It went missing two hours into the flight.
11:36 The plane was flying from Malaysia to China when it deviated from its flight path and
11:40 crossed over the Andaman Sea. This is where search efforts were initially held, before
11:45 further study concluded that the plane had apparently gone south towards the Indian Ocean.
11:50 It was in this ocean that several pieces of debris later washed ashore, confirming that
11:55 the plane had been destroyed.
11:56 This broken bit of airplane wreckage, more than six feet long, washed up on the French
12:01 island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean. A first step toward closure for the families, who've
12:08 had no real answers until now.
12:11 But we still don't know how it was destroyed or why it deviated from its course. Countless
12:16 theories have been put forth, including a hijacking, a shoot-down, gradual decompression
12:22 and confusion related to loss of oxygen.
12:25 It's a cold case, basically. I mean, the files still exist. The people who looked into it
12:30 are still around, but they've sort of put it on the back burner and they're waiting
12:33 to see if anything happens.
12:35 Which of these mysteries give you the chills? Let us know in the comments.
12:39 Says he still has faith in Midlothian detectives, who have been working the case for seven years.
