Ken Norton vs Pedro Lovell in a 12 round non-title heavyweight fight

Date: January 10, 1976

Venue: Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas

Norton stance: orthodox

Lovell stance: orthodox

Ken Norton handed Muhammad Ali his second defeat in March 1973, when he broke Ali's jaw and won a split decision. A rematch six months later saw Ali win by a hotly disputed split decision. Norton's reward for these two bouts was a shot at George Foreman's undisputed title. Norton lasted just two rounds. Norton bounced back with a couple of routine stoppage wins over journeymen, followed by wins against Jerry Quarry and Jose Luis Garcia - both in the fifth round.

Pedro Lovell was from Argentina, but nearly all his pro fights were in America. He was unbeaten in his first 12 bouts, and starting to gain a reputation as a knockout artist when he was rendered unconscious by Terry Krueger. Lovell won the rematch, breaking Krueger's nose. He won his next four bouts and was given an opportunity to break into the big time when he faced Norton.
