00:25 seven years after this fight was first mooted here they are round one then
00:33 willie limond who's got himself in incredible shape for this has been saying in the build-up
00:42 it's a very canny gamesmanship from willie to say all the pressures on ricky burns everyone
00:46 expects he's going to win he's the three-weight world champion so all the pressures on him
00:51 taking the pressure off himself the biggest pressure as ricky burns was saying his wife's
00:57 telling me he must be mad doing this but yeah they just keep on going don't they
01:02 yeah it's unbelievable really what we're witnessing right now
01:06 both of them very good starts as well both looking very sharp

01:18 good body shot as well i think he's got to have a strong start here i think the longer this fight
01:24 goes the more that'll tilt in favor of burns he is younger he's so durable never been stopped
01:30 you do wonder how will he will be coping if it goes deep into the 9 10 11 area he forgot to
01:38 mention that that ricky is also unbelievably fat he's got weird condition and he's uh his engine is
01:47 unbelievable he's super fat i think he's still to this very day outruns the the lads that are top
01:55 amateur boxers i think he and the young professionals and stable i think he can outwork them
01:59 all still to this very day well i remember when he left billy nelson after a defeat and they had
02:04 such good years together as of course did willie limond with billy nelson but he went down to the
02:09 tony sims gym in essex and there was a whole bunch of champions and they were all blown away by his
02:15 work ethic all of them that's why i say he's a pros pro i mean his dedication talk about living
02:19 the life ricky burns lives it it's a nice combination coming in from burns as well
02:24 and the right hand coming through ross limond back a little bit yep that was good combinations for
02:29 ricky there well he has to get that head moving as well or come back with his own shots possibly
02:35 his best form defense could be attack you know they used to say in that sims gym in essex they
02:55 said we almost have to slow ricky down he used to run everywhere he'd you know he'd run from his
03:01 apartment to the gym he'd run from the gym to the to the running track i mean he was just
03:06 just a dynamo wouldn't stop super super fit guy
03:10 the body shot there and uh nicely blocked off by burns great amateur stable as well

03:50 it's a really sharp combination that burns got through that might have brought that up you know

05:37 limon's got to try and find something with the right hand a little slip from burns just a

05:46 how many times has ricky burns been on the floor in his career and got up and seen it out
05:53 nothing wrong with his heart or his chin or his chin look over that draw he got against
06:02 ray beltran and he was fortunate to get that draw but he was uh fighting with a broken jaw
06:06 from round two onwards still saw it out so unbelievably durable i remember hitting ricky
06:15 burns with punches and just thinking to myself yep that's it that shot that's going to be the
06:19 one he's going to go down now he just didn't go down and when he did he gets up again doesn't he
06:23 gets roman martinez and over that day and slatted can slatted chad in night
06:28 put him on the floor in the first round got up from that
06:34 of course taking terence crawford 12 rounds as well yeah
06:37 i think you called that one that i did yeah i was doing the analytical stuff behind you guys and
06:45 terence crawford that was his that was his his appearance basically saying that's me here
06:51 he oozed class that he was unbelievable there was nothing ricky could do about it at all
06:56 and he tried and he tried everything
07:01 yep that was terence crawford statement to the world that he was here
07:04 and what has he went on to achieve remarkable stuff body shot dipping in there in many ways that
07:10 their best nights have been in defeat haven't they ricky going up against terence crawford
07:14 and going the distance and will he so close to getting that knockout against amir khan yeah

07:33 and just took his time didn't rush anything and that'll suit willie i think
07:38 well there has been some talk hasn't there amongst the uh the so-called experts alex that uh
07:52 ricky burns as you look at this incredible pedigree of his i mean just look at some of
07:57 the names that he's been in with that night against kevin mitchell michael katsidis what
08:02 a night that was lucky against raymundo beltran but what heart he showed and the losses to
08:08 crawford and slatted shannon and then coming back to kelly de rocco and it just goes on and on and
08:14 on and uh who's that guy that beat him for all those titles back in february 2006 i think that's
08:21 the tribute to him though you lose two british title shots and he lost the second one to carl
08:24 johansson it wasn't bad but was never world class that's usually it isn't it you're not
08:28 a world-class operator but what he did with his career after that remarkable stuff
08:33 round three then just gonna say that there is a school of thought that
08:47 burns has got that great engine might come out and set a really fast tempo and just try to
08:53 draw the legs out of lemon and he's been uh very compact and composed at the moment
08:59 not rushed anything picked some nice shots like that body shot there
09:02 little smile there from burns as he was made to miss badly and struggling with range again
09:19 limond uh yeah doing a nice job of job of judging the distance yep like what i said to you earlier
09:24 that you know wally has got great feet work as well oh that's a lovely little exchange

09:35 he's got a great right hand over the top as well while he whips it over real quick just waits on
09:42 you missing with that jab and he he almost hooks it over your guard he's really really good at that

10:20 to give each other any room you know burns lands a good body shot i'm sure lemon they'll come right
10:25 back and vice versa while he tries that overhand right there that's probably shot again burns

11:32 now we've talked about the body of work of ricky burns all those title fights 21 in total 13 world
11:44 title fights willy's record not too shabby either recovering from that loss against the massively
11:50 overrated alex arthur to uh come on and pick up a variety of belts and the only the only loss
11:58 to a non-future world champion came right at the end there against tyrone nurse
12:02 nurse was a real handful for anybody yeah he really was huge for the weight as well
12:12 he talked about his best shot of the fight so far that right hand getting around the
12:17 back of the guard there from lemon that got ricky's attention
12:21 you know boxing is usually sold at this level isn't it on the good guy versus the bad guy
12:32 who are the hometown guy against the raider from yeah obviously who's the bad guy here
12:36 there just isn't one what's great guys yeah you know credit to themselves to their professions
12:43 good family men absolutely superb professionals can't root against either of these two
12:53 burns digging in that body shot once again as you talked about it money in the bank just chipping
13:04 away a bit of blood coming from the nose now of limond as well
13:10 so burns is starting to make a bit of a breakthrough here in round four

13:34 still looking for those body shots isn't he burns yeah good counter punch for all
13:45 eleven day although that left it was real sharp that
13:49 good defense for wally as well yeah there's a lot being blocked
13:54 just ricky burns his engine it's the only thing that you've got to overcome and it's right there
14:02 till the end he does not tire this this is the problem for limond isn't it you know he's not a
14:08 knockout artist burns has never been stopped burns has this fantastic engine he'll go from first round
14:13 to last and that blood is starting to uh cause a bit of a problem here for willie limond
14:19 anybody who thought this was going to be an exhibition fight yeah forget that
14:27 this is serious business for these two
14:41 yeah that blood really is starting to become a problem
14:47 oh lovely right hand counter from lemon oh that court burns cold
14:58 super shot that was yeah brilliant shot for wally
15:07 well burns certainly knew about it and of course he's got good powers of recovery
15:13 and has seemed to have shrugged it off okay but it's just a little warning to burns
15:17 again he gets through
15:23 with that right hand there burns
15:27 and that is a lot of blood coming out and i wonder if that's even a broken nose you know
15:34 it's certainly going to affect his breathing and they've got some work to do in the limit
15:39 corner and yeah you saw him gesticulating in the direction of that nose yeah his corner men have
15:43 got some serious work to do here as burns goes back and takes a breather it's all serene in
15:48 that corner and it's far from serene in this corner

16:00 how quickly burns recovers is unbelievable really
16:13 i mean that's the shot of the fight and it's barely made a difference
16:18 it affected him for about a second unbelievable
16:23 let's see if they can just stem the bleeding there
16:37 in the limit corner as we go into round five here

16:51 well ricky's going to get a little bit of a telling off here for being borderline

17:14 looking for the big single right hand
17:17 burns catches one but actually lands one as well at the same time yeah
17:29 i think ricky knows he has more time on his hands than willie here
17:40 nick he's being a little bit more patient indeed
17:45 well they start to mark up swell up a little bit as well around the eyes

17:58 i'll tell you these jabs are really causing lemon the problem i mean it's
18:10 all about exploiting weaknesses in this game or any sport isn't it of course and at the moment
18:16 burns can see the limit weakness big big problem with the nose and he's targeting it so effectively

18:31 the problem that willie limberd has got is i just don't think he's got the
18:40 shot that will really get burns his attention

18:52 someone keeps stopping just getting a sense that lemon is slowing here you know a little bit good
18:58 right hand though it's a little flash of defiance isn't it just as i say that but i think he is
19:04 feeling this pace that left hand a bit higher as well nick ricky burns will start looking
19:09 now he's been so effective with the job he'll start looking for the right hand soon
19:17 it's a great job for a couple of hours
19:18 really very very clever for burns well lemon and we did talk about it before the fight as well he
19:29 shed four stone to get down here you do wonder if that's going to have an effect
19:33 but willie limond is is in with a guy who you'll know it's just a relentless motor
19:40 you can't feel tired against ricky burns if you do you're in a world of trouble
19:45 so he saw the frustration there yeah it's driving up nuts the bleeding nose yeah
19:53 whereas burns barely a mark on him look yeah
20:12 in fact there's not a mark on him not barely it's not a mark on him at all
20:16 i've never even really seen him swell up at all or you know have a black eye or nothing like that
20:25 but it's the breathing when you've got an issue with your nose like that it's
20:40 got to be a big problem hasn't it yeah you know what say this is all but we're all the fighters
20:45 as well you know it's uh something that actually happens over the years you know that your nose
20:50 becomes more blocked and more blocked yeah age sucks now i get the sense you're speaking from
20:57 experience there as well all those hundred amateur contests and then all the professional
21:08 contests and all the sparring matches he knows is not designed to get punched on a regular basis
21:14 and it's bleeding straight away right at the start of this set around i mean there's just
21:19 no respite for for limonde at all it's very very difficult to stem that kind of nose bleed as well
21:26 especially if there's a break in there look you know it's going to be uh it's just going to
21:30 continue to bleed right to the last bell no matter how good a cornerman you have or a cut man or
21:38 yeah really difficult to stem that kind of nosebleed man's got to watch these body shots i
21:42 mean he was low again there and he acknowledged it himself i mean he's not doing it deliberately
21:46 but he's he's straying south of the border a bit too much another slip on that again yeah
21:52 i think it's his own blood i mean it is i mean it is really a mess
22:05 i had to watch that amir khan fight back earlier this week when billy nelson pulled him out on his
22:10 stool with that suspected broken jaw he just would not quit and khan was giving him a battering
22:15 so there's no way he's gonna throw in the towel on this one not at all but now
22:23 and now burns has turned the slip on this uh slick surface now
22:30 but uh that nose really is a mess and it must be giving him all sorts of problems
22:34 it's not landing any good flush shots in this round so far ricky
22:46 it's got a minute to change that but it's been effective with the jab keeping willie at bay
22:57 but he's not dropped in any bombs yet and missed with that heavy body shot nick the attempt to just
23:00 skiff the waistband of willie but
23:07 burns again just looking so sharp
23:16 yeah the referee was kind of in my way there was like a right uppercut like a side and right uppercut
23:23 exactly guys trade jabs like he's looking to work inside a little bit more there
23:37 well he's struggling to get his sight there as well he was blinking his eyes and
23:44 must be going in his eyes as well now nick
23:49 we are at the halfway point of this one the frustration there for willie lemon
23:54 he can't breathe no let's just say they can't breathe
23:56 i mean he's absolutely gasping for air on his bench while we're looking at these replays
24:07 all right this is this is a horrible situation for him there's just no stopping it

24:38 lemon absolutely determined to get off his stool and get back in there
24:50 and uh victor laughlin just making sure this stays clean which is how we want it to stay
24:59 he's only been deliberate from burns he's not that type at all
25:03 all right so let's keep an eye on that nose
25:08 i guess they've had a nightmare with it in the corner
25:12 and that's not down to bad corner work or anything but when the nose goes the nose goes
25:19 yeah it's very difficult you know again to stem that kind of bleed is really really difficult
25:25 especially if it's broken in there mick the way that's bleeding i think it probably is broken to
25:31 be honest well seeing the amount of blood three or four rounds ago i thought there's every chance
25:35 that's a break and burns just keeps popping in those jabs look he's pink glove is now red i was
25:45 going to say his left glove yeah he's got more blood on it than uh than pink as you say it's just
25:52 it's just being used as a battering ramp
25:57 liman just can't get his range can't land clean and not with any consistency
26:03 and it is literally just so hard for him to breathe he's open mouthed in there
26:12 blood's getting in the mouth i mean it's just a mess
26:14 another little flash of defiance there with the right hand from limit
26:25 and burns just ties him up while we're trying to dig in some body shots there
26:38 try to get the uppercut in their limit
26:45 burns continuing to soften his man up
27:05 burns said he'll turn it into a war if he can
27:07 and it's a war that he is winning at the moment and pretty handily as we
27:12 get down to the last 30 seconds of round seven
27:24 this is this is a tricky question i've got for you alex here
27:33 given the career he's had there's no way willie limit will want to end it retiring on his stool
27:37 but is there an argument to say that maybe that's what needs to happen here
27:42 well someone will have to do it nick because he won't pull out himself he won't
27:46 he definitely won't do it not it'll take a very brave corner man to pull out

28:06 honestly the contrast in corners is stark we can just see it's so calm in the burns corner here
28:23 willie limon is literally gasping for air yeah well he can't breathe it's very very difficult
28:29 now victor lachlan's being called in here the referee just took a look he was happy
28:37 that's the first sign of some serious concern in that corner
28:46 yeah i think they're maybe gonna let them go one more round i think
28:51 a few words between the two of them there yeah this may well be the last act for these two
29:02 round eight these guys have got a lot of mutual respect for each other they know each other very
29:07 well they're both coaches on the scotland boxing team the both of them together yeah
29:14 pretty good ones from what i hear yeah they're very good experience there is no nothing that
29:21 can cover experience back in the sport you know these guys have been there and done it all yeah
29:26 well can lemon find a different dimension here because burns is just pretty much picking him
29:38 off well a nice bit of work with the jabs didn't affect burns in the slightest but a bit of success
29:43 for lemon but success has been very very limited for him just not been able to get through four
29:50 rapid jabs in a row ricky was just having a little dance there to his cell just taking a little break
29:56 he knows when to take breaks as well ricky he only knows he's got enough experience to
30:00 to know when to just sit back and catch a breath of breath of air and let his opponent miss
30:10 comes in from burns to get to the midway point of this round
30:15 good job from bombs out heavy job from wally's left cheekbone planted
30:37 some effort this from lemon isn't it 44 years old and second best and with that nose from what the
30:42 third round and here he is still giving it a go yeah what's a testament to his fitness and his heart
30:50 remarkable guy to do what he done and put himself through this and training camp it is unbelievable
30:59 just to get himself in condition to go eight rounds with yeah i know you know a former world
31:06 class operator three-time world champion it's getting pretty one-sided this alex it really is
31:13 ricky's just dominating with his jab and he's just far far too too fat there's a long way
31:17 this is where it's getting dangerous because fatigue is kicking in and he's going to be more
31:23 open to these lemon and if he is a long way behind on the cards which he certainly is on my card
31:29 has somebody got a decision to make i don't know who's got the authority in the lemon
31:34 camp though as you say it's going to be a big call to pull him out
31:39 and we're inside the final 10 seconds of this eighth round
31:44 another shake of the head from willie limon and i think victor lockwood has said he's absolutely
31:55 right that's enough it's all over yeah just had nothing left and there was there was no point
32:03 in prolonging the agony was there so it ends with smiles and hugs two of the great legends of scottish
32:13 boxing have put on a terrific performance once again ricky burns what an engine

32:36 well i'm glad that decision was made whether it was a referee decision whether it was agreed in
32:52 the corner one more round whatever it was it was absolutely the right decision because willie was
32:56 really really running out of gas pretty badly he was but he would not have stopped he would
33:01 not have stopped it took the referee and willie's corner to end that there will he would have kept
33:06 going right until he was flat on his back he really would have but we were seeing more and
33:11 more of that sort of shot going on will his defense is really getting opened up and burns so strong
33:18 and so fresh after eight rounds you know he's going the full distance and his tempo won't slow down at
33:24 all there's no hard feelings there victor laughlin eventually waving that off and i think in his heart
33:32 of hearts willie limon himself knows that's absolutely the right decision as well yeah i'm
33:36 quite sure he does you know there's plenty that's bad in this business of boxing but
33:46 there's an awful lot that's good oh yeah this is this is this is a really magical moment
