00:00 Israel says fighting in Gaza will continue as long as Hamas militants are present.
00:10 Flares and explosions over the Gaza skyline on Saturday night as full scale fighting resumes.
00:17 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the assault would continue as long as
00:21 Hamas militants are still present in the Palestinian enclave.
00:24 Meanwhile, casualties of the fighting continue to arrive in the central Gaza Strip.
00:29 The Hamas-run Ministry of Health said nearly 200 people have been killed since the truce
00:33 expired on Friday.
00:38 In Tel Aviv, former hostages released from Hamas captivity joined the families of those
00:43 who are still being held in a protest calling for another ceasefire.
00:47 But talks between Israel and Hamas have broken down, with Israel accusing Hamas of failing
00:52 to honor an agreement to release all women and children.
01:00 On Saturday, more than 100 trucks of aid entered Gaza through the Rafah crossing, despite initial
01:05 efforts by Israel to ban their entry when the fighting resumed.
01:09 A senior advisor to Netanyahu said Israel was making maximum effort to protect civilians.
01:18 A German tourist was fatally stabbed in an attack near the Eiffel Tower in Paris late
01:25 Saturday evening.
01:26 The attacker injured two other people as well before being restrained by police.
01:31 French officials say he shouted "Allah Akbar" during the attack.
01:35 The assailant is well known to law enforcement.
01:38 According to the Minister of Interior Gérald Darmanin, the 26-year-old French national
01:42 served a jail term in 2016 for planning another attack and was being monitored because of
01:48 serious psychiatric problems.
01:50 The case is being treated as a terror attack.
01:56 Fifty oil companies, which are responsible for half the world's production, have pledged
02:00 to reach near zero methane emissions by 2030.
02:04 But the headline-grabbing pledge that's come out of COP28 was dismissed as a smokescreen
02:09 by environmental groups.
02:11 If it happens, the pledge would trim about a tenth of a degree Celsius from future warming,
02:16 a prominent climate scientist told the Associated Press.
02:19 Meanwhile, the EU pledged to invest 2.3 billion euros to move away from fossil fuels.
02:25 Ursula von der Leyen urged the world to switch to renewable energy.
02:30 We must roll out more renewables and we must use less energy to produce the products and
02:38 the services we need.
02:41 And the world's cheapest energy source are renewables.
02:47 Also on Saturday, US climate envoy John Kerry joined French President Emmanuel Macron in
02:52 pushing for more nuclear energy, which doesn't produce greenhouse gas emissions, even though
02:57 accidents are potentially catastrophic.
03:00 And a group of more than 20 nations called for a tripling of nuclear energy generated
03:04 in the world by 2050.
03:06 The southern Philippines was hit by a powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of
03:15 7.6 on Saturday night.
03:18 Many villagers fled their homes in panic around midnight after the authorities issued a tsunami
03:23 warning.
03:24 But there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties and no large waves hit
03:29 the coast.
03:30 In Japan, authorities issued evacuation orders for parts of Okinawa Prefecture, including
03:36 the entire coastal area.
03:38 Thousands of people were affected.
03:45 Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has accused Kiev of jeopardizing Ukraine's
03:50 defense after he was barred from leaving the country on Friday.
03:55 But Ukraine's security services say Poroshenko was planning to meet Hungarian leader Viktor
04:00 Orban, who Kiev has dubbed a friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin and said his visit
04:06 could be used for Kremlin propaganda.
04:09 Budapest called the move a political purge and said it was proof Ukraine is not yet ready
04:15 to join the European Union.
04:17 Meanwhile, the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant suffered a complete blackout overnight on
04:22 Friday.
04:23 The plant, which is still under Russian occupation, was cut off from the main power supply and
04:29 had to kick in its own diesel generators.
04:32 The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, said the incident is a reminder of
04:37 the precarious safety situation at the plant, which can be affected by events far from the
04:42 site itself.
