02:07 - Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Winnipeg,
02:25 the final day of competition here
02:27 at the Junior Senior Skate Canada Challenge.
02:29 I'm your host, Ted Barton, along with Jonah McPhail.
02:31 Only three events today.
02:32 We have the Senior Women's Free Program, of course,
02:34 and the Junior and Senior Pair Free Program as well.
02:37 Joni, what have you got for us this morning?
02:39 - All right, Ted, what have I got?
02:41 Day four, we had some finals yesterday.
02:44 We're gonna recap those, starting with the Junior men.
02:46 David Steingart came in first place,
02:49 followed by Grayson Long and David Howse.
02:51 I really do like David Howse's skating.
02:53 I think he has a lot of potential.
02:55 - Novice champion from this last season.
02:57 - Novice champion from last season.
02:58 - And bronze medalist so far.
03:00 - So far.
03:01 But to be honest, anybody in the top six of that event
03:05 can take a medal or can take the championships in Calgary.
03:09 I think they all have potential.
03:11 There was some struggles in the Free Program.
03:13 It was set up great after the short,
03:16 but you have to do two programs back to back.
03:19 - Yeah, and I think it's pretty clear.
03:20 We talked about this off camera,
03:22 is that in every one of these categories,
03:24 it is so tight, anything can happen.
03:26 I mean, we always say that to a degree,
03:28 but usually there's someone who's a leader
03:30 and separating a little bit.
03:32 No, not this year.
03:33 In any category, anything can happen.
03:35 - But we find that a challenge.
03:37 - Yeah.
03:38 - We get from here and then Canadians, things change.
03:39 Shout out though to David Bondar
03:41 for getting that triple axel in.
03:43 Little short, but great attempt.
03:46 I know John Kim took off like he was gonna do one,
03:49 but it didn't happen in the air.
03:50 So hopefully Canadians will have those ready to go.
03:52 And maybe some quads.
03:53 - Yeah, because both those men can do quads.
03:55 We'll see what happens to Canadians, of course.
03:57 - Junior women's event.
03:58 Again, not without difficulties in the free program.
04:01 There was some struggles and there's some strong skaters,
04:03 but I think they're gonna have to go back
04:05 and do some extra hard training on the free programs
04:08 'cause you need to.
04:10 Lulu Lin though, I mean, she is so strong technically.
04:14 She's fun to watch and a natural gifted performer.
04:17 - Or with Lulu, when you watch her skate,
04:19 you never feel nervous.
04:20 I mean, she's always looks in control.
04:22 She might make a mistake, but just a small mistake.
04:24 It's not anything more than that.
04:25 - Yes.
04:26 - And shout out to Michelle Lee, pulling up from 12 to six.
04:30 You know, and she is a strong skater.
04:31 So she went out there and proved it yesterday.
04:33 But again, waiting to see in Calgary,
04:35 what's gonna happen.
04:37 - Okay.
04:37 - Okay, on today to the finals for the senior women.
04:40 Now, top of the leaderboard, Fianne Laundrie.
04:43 - Oh, that was awesome.
04:44 - Who was 14th in junior women last year.
04:46 And here she is sitting atop the leaderboard.
04:48 - And the expression in the Kiss and Cry
04:50 when she saw the scores came up.
04:51 And I got to interview her of course after,
04:53 and she was so thrilled.
04:54 And I said, well, how did that happen?
04:55 You know, moving from that position up to here,
04:58 you really, it just always, always comes down to hard work
05:01 and a little bit of belief,
05:02 getting confidence in what you're able to do.
05:04 - Well, we're gonna see what happens today.
05:07 And I hope, because there's some strong names
05:08 right behind her.
05:09 Kaya Ryder, Justine McClelland, Sarah Maude Dupuis,
05:13 Audren Foster, Fiona Bombardier.
05:16 Like that's a strong field of women.
05:18 So I'm hoping the free programs are good.
05:20 - What's interesting is that, you know,
05:22 at least the good top half of the senior women
05:24 and even in the juniors,
05:25 all do the triple, triple combinations or triples.
05:27 They've got the content.
05:29 That's not the issue.
05:30 It's delivering at the moment,
05:31 which is always the issue for any sport.
05:33 It doesn't matter, but the pressure is always on.
05:36 At least the gap is closed and that's nice to see.
05:39 - Now, speaking of Fiona Bombardier,
05:41 interesting, she should be in the second to last,
05:44 she placed seventh.
05:45 - Second last group to free program.
05:46 - Group and free program to skate.
05:48 However, because she's also competing in pairs today,
05:51 she was given the option and she is selected to skate first
05:54 in the entire event.
05:55 - Which she did, I think she was second yesterday.
05:57 - No, she was first.
05:58 - Was she first yesterday?
05:59 - She was also first yesterday,
06:00 but she wants to go get it out of the way
06:01 so she can go focus and concentrate on pairs.
06:04 - And this is her first time, first competition
06:05 where she's actually doing both disciplines.
06:08 And I was the first time I saw her in pairs
06:10 and we'll talk about that,
06:11 but boy, did she ever look comfortable in that as well?
06:13 So that's pretty exciting.
06:14 - Well, she comes from a great skating background.
06:16 So first of all, in pairs, the junior pairs,
06:19 Bo Callahan and Christophe Roche in first place,
06:22 you know, a good skate, a new partnership,
06:24 but they did have some international experience.
06:27 - Great personality in the interview that I did with them.
06:29 They're just so cute and so bubbly.
06:32 So looking a lot, looking forward to a lot from them.
06:34 - So we're down to four teams in juniors.
06:36 We've had two withdrawals,
06:37 but I do want to also point out,
06:39 when you get a chance to watch Megan Newton and Aiden Wright.
06:42 So Megan moved from Kelowna out to Oakville
06:45 to try and find a pair of partner and do pairs.
06:48 It's a challenge because she jumps the opposite direction.
06:50 Aiden was also without a partner and they decided,
06:53 even though they go in the opposite direction,
06:55 to team up and skate together.
06:57 So not only have they had to learn to do pairs,
06:59 'cause she's never done pairs before, Aiden has,
07:02 but they go in the opposite direction.
07:04 He's had to learn to throw her in the opposite direction.
07:07 She's had to learn to twist in the opposite direction.
07:10 Spins, they've had to relearn their spins.
07:12 So it's been an uphill challenge,
07:14 but they look great and they're having fun.
07:16 - And what we mean in the opposite direction,
07:18 just different directions.
07:19 So going to the right or going to the left.
07:21 So there's no right way,
07:22 except for most-- - So wrong way.
07:25 - Exactly, get a whole word tangled here.
07:27 But they go different directions
07:29 and it's difficult to do.
07:31 - Yeah, right and left, not right and wrong.
07:32 - Yeah, exactly.
07:33 - We should clear that up.
07:34 Senior pairs, Emmy Kerrigan and Brian Piero.
07:38 They have been a team for a while.
07:39 They look strong out there.
07:41 But right behind them is Fiona Bombardier
07:44 and her new partner, Gab Farren.
07:46 And then right behind them,
07:47 Cadence Darniski and Rain Eberl,
07:50 who are a seasoned pair team
07:52 and they are so solid.
07:53 Like whenever they go out and skate,
07:55 they're well-trained, they execute,
07:57 they're always right there.
07:58 So I think it's gonna be an exciting finish.
08:00 - Yeah, it's very tight, no question.
08:02 We have a lot of pairs.
08:03 Of course, we have three teams going to the Grand Prix Final.
08:06 I think, no, we have two senior teams
08:08 and three junior teams on their way to Beijing.
08:12 So when we get Canadians,
08:13 there'll be bigger categories and lots of abilities.
08:17 - And Brooke and Ben, who are not here,
08:18 who will also be there.
08:20 All right, that recaps the skating.
08:23 Lots of fun.
08:24 - Joni's Winnipeg facts.
08:26 - Lots of fun facts left to come.
08:27 So here we go.
08:29 Winnipeg was the first city in the world
08:31 to introduce the 911 emergency number.
08:35 - I didn't know that.
08:35 - Neither did I.
08:36 - Good digging.
08:37 - Good digging.
08:38 Winnipeg, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet
08:40 is Canada's oldest ballet
08:42 and also the longest continuously operating ballet
08:46 in North America.
08:47 And my girlfriend, Angie,
08:49 used to dance for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
08:51 - Well, I tried out for it, but they didn't respond.
08:55 - And this one I also found fascinating.
08:58 Winnipeg is home to the largest
09:00 outdoor skating rink in the world.
09:02 - Really?
09:03 - Not Ottawa, as reported in Outdoor Magazine.
09:06 The path actually takes you along
09:08 the Assiniboine and Red Rivers
09:10 over eight and a half kilometers.
09:11 - That is amazing.
09:13 Wow, well done.
09:14 Well done.
09:15 - I have learned a lot about Winnipeg.
09:16 I'm really excited.
09:17 - You gotta go out to that river.
09:19 - And I got an extra jar of honeydew sauce yesterday
09:21 as a gift, so that was nice.
09:23 - Okay, that's perfect.
09:24 What's the weather like?
09:24 - Okay, we're gonna start in Kelowna for Steve.
09:27 Minus three in overcast with some light snow.
09:30 Vancouver is in for an atmospheric river.
09:34 - And what is that, you might ask?
09:36 It's just a lot of rain.
09:37 It's just like a sheet of rain coming down for one day,
09:40 but not as bad as 2021.
09:41 - Well, and I think there's some more rain in the forecast.
09:44 However, tiny township,
09:47 and I'm mentioning tiny township
09:49 'cause that's where I will be off to after Winnipeg.
09:52 Zero degrees with some snow.
09:54 - Where is that?
09:56 - It's just north of Toronto.
09:58 - And why are you going there?
09:59 - Well, 'cause that's where I live.
10:01 - Oh yes, the cottage, pardon me.
10:03 - And then also Calgary.
10:06 Minus five clear and sunny, and why Calgary, you ask?
10:10 - National championships.
10:11 - National championships.
10:12 - January 8th to 14th, don't miss that.
10:14 That's gonna be really amazing.
10:16 - Yep, that's our next stop.
10:17 And right here in Winnipeg,
10:18 much the same, minus five clear and sunny.
10:21 - Okay, and just a reminder
10:22 on the national championships coming up,
10:24 that is going to be quite a remarkable competition.
10:26 All these categories are wide open.
10:29 We've had great success internationally
10:30 in the juniors and in the seniors in pairs and dance.
10:33 It's gonna be really a tight battle, no question at all.
10:36 And the men's event, the senior men's event,
10:38 title totally open.
10:40 Madeline Skees is, of course,
10:41 she'll be going for her third straight title
10:43 in senior women, but with some challenges behind.
10:45 So that's gonna be exciting.
10:47 We'll be live streaming that.
10:48 It'll be the only way to see the Canadian championships.
10:52 We'll be on skatecanada.ca and on cbc.ca as well.
10:57 We'll have a full broadcast team
10:58 in both French and English,
11:00 and you won't wanna miss that.
