00:28 Indonesia's Mount Merapi located in West Sumatra province unleashed a violent eruption on Sunday
00:35 sending plumes of white and gray ash soaring more than 3,000 meters which is equivalent to about 9,800
00:43 feet into the sky. The eruption resulted in a cascade of volcanic debris affecting nearby villages
00:50 and triggering a massive rescue operation. Authorities revising the count of hikers on
00:56 the mountain to 75 over the weekend located the 11 deceased near the crater during Monday morning
01:02 search efforts. Overnight efforts by rescue teams have uncovered a tragic toll with at least 11
01:08 hikers confirmed dead from a group of 26. Miraculously three survivors were successfully
01:13 rescued from the aftermath of the eruption. The head of the Padang Research and Rescue Agency,
01:18 Abdul Malik shared the grim update stating that 26 people have not been evacuated. He said that
01:24 the rescue team found 14 of them, three of them alive and 11 were found dead. The challenging
01:31 terrain has hindered rescue operations with teams taking turns carrying the deceased down the
01:36 mountain. According to reports, ambulances rushed to the evacuated climbers some with burns and
01:43 rescue workers assisted injured hikers in the darkness of the night. Ongoing volcanic activity
01:48 has made helicopter air evacuations difficult. Malik remarked that visually until the morning
01:54 smoke was still billowing from the top. Malik said that visually everything still looks grey.
01:59 Rudy Rinaldi, head of the West Sumatra Disaster Mitigation Agency disclosed that some rescued
02:05 hikers required medical attention due to their proximity to the eruption, suffering burns and
02:11 other injuries. The eruption also had wider consequences with ash rain reaching Bukit Tinggi
02:17 city, the third largest city in West Sumatra. Residents in local villages were provided with
02:22 masks and advised to stay indoors as a precaution. Mount Marapi currently holds the second-highest
02:29 alert level with a three-kilometre exclusion zone around its crater. Indonesia, part of the
02:35 Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences significant volcanic and seismic activity, boasting nearly
02:41 130 active volcanoes.
