00:00 My favorite and it's a coincidence that I've met him for the first time in person, Salman Khan.
00:06 In all these years, this is the first time I have met him in person and I said that to him when I saw him down.
00:14 I said it's unfortunate that we never met before but welcome to Kolkata.
00:21 Welcome to Kolkata.
00:24 Honorable Speaker of the Assembly, respected dignitaries on the dais,
00:30 please allow me to take the names of people on the dais because today it's not my platform.
00:36 You know I belong to the world of sport but today is a platform for people who are sitting on this dais
00:41 and they deserve a lot of respect because today the Kolkata Film Festival or the Tollywood
00:47 or the film fraternity which we speak in Bengal or in Calcutta is because of the people who are on the dais.
00:53 So just allow me two minutes to take the name of everyone.
00:56 Shobha Shashi Babu, Paranda, Savitri Di, Madhubedi, Chiranjit Babu, Gautam Babu, Ranjit Babu, Sundeep Babu, Anjanda,
01:09 film dignitaries from Bombay, Anilji, Maheshji, Sonakshi, Satrughanji.
01:16 I felt that it's important that I mention all of them because today what you see and today what we all enjoy,
01:24 today what we all call as entertainment is because of all of them.
01:29 My colleagues, my friends from the film industry who are here down, Bhoombada, Prashanjit, Dev,
01:36 and I can see them Nusrat, Koel, Ritu Parna in front, all of them, Shravanthi, Mimi,
01:44 and just pardon me if I keep forgetting names but I'll mention it in due course of my speech.
01:51 And I say this because this industry started in the early 1890s.
01:56 1890s when cinema was different.
01:59 It went through a lot of transformation from cinema which was mute, cinema which you could not hear,
02:06 from cinema to where it is today, from black and white to color.
02:11 And this is a city and this is a state which has not only produced actors,
02:18 not only given birth to actors who've entertained the Bengali, not just the Bengali industry
02:23 but also in Mumbai and in other parts of the country, but they've given stalwarts who may not be actors
02:29 but who've taken the world by storm with various films, their direction, their art, their culture,
02:36 and the way they have taken Indian cinema forward.
02:40 Salman is a huge name in the film world, not just in India but outside the country as well
02:46 and he will agree with me that a lot of success, a lot of successful Bengalis from the state of West Bengal,
02:55 whether it's music, whether it's direction, whether it's filmmaking, whether it's acting,
03:01 have made a mark in Mumbai and in our country because of the talent they have.
03:06 Because this is a state, this is a city which has produced enormous talent over a long period of time.
03:14 Salman wouldn't know that the name Tollywood comes because it's a mixture of where the film industry in Calcutta
03:20 started in Tollygunge and a mixture of Hollywood, so they've combined together to make it as Tollywood.
03:26 I don't know where Bollywood comes from because I presume it's Bombay and Hollywood and that's why it's Bollywood,
03:31 but that's the name Tollywood comes from.
03:34 My sincere respect to Prasenjit, Dev, I can see both of them here because for what they have done for Bengali cinema
03:43 and what they have achieved over a long period of time, it's their day and so many people who are in this wonderful auditorium
03:51 is because of them.
03:53 I take this opportunity to thank Honorable Chief Minister for inviting me here
03:58 and I feel so honoured and proud with the respect and care she gives not only just to me but to everybody.
04:04 Everybody in this auditorium, the actors, the producers, the senior actors and everyone who participates
04:11 to make this Kolkata Film Festival a very special one.
04:14 My sincere thanks to Raj and his team, I'm told Bumbada is also a part of the organising committee here,
04:21 so my sincere thanks to him for making this such a wonderful success because this has really grown over the years
04:27 and this is my third time in this film festival and I see so many people wanting to come and watch it.
04:35 Today is the beginning, it's the fifth, it will go on for a week.
04:38 There are juries from all over the world, from Australia I presume and from Australia,
04:43 and I don't want to miss anyone from Australia, from Russia, from Spain, from USA.
04:48 There are filmmakers from Australia and I hope they'll enjoy the movies here, not only just the movies
04:55 but this beautiful state of West Bengal and the city of Kolkata.
04:58 And for this entire week, for the next seven days as Raj said, there's going to be films from various parts of the world,
05:06 international films, local films, Bengali films and I hope all of you here,
05:11 because I know people come and watch it, it's not just the inauguration but it's also the week which follows the inauguration
05:17 where people come and watch the movies and enjoy themselves.
05:20 It's a beautiful time to be in Kolkata, it's the winter and this is Salman's first time in the film festival
05:26 and I hope he'll like it, he'll enjoy it, he'll meet a lot of successful people from our fraternity here
05:31 and I wish him all the best, wish him all the success.
05:35 He's entertained people for years, for years and hopefully he'll continue to do that.
05:40 And once again thanks to Honourable Chief Minister, his team, his cultural team, his immediate office
05:47 for making this program such a grand success.
05:50 And thank you so much for having me once again here. Thank you.
