Road rage: Ex-IT exec sentenced to 16 years jail for causing Syed Danial's death
A former IT executive was sentenced to 16 years in prison by the Shah Alam High Court Thursday (Dec 7) for causing the death of bank manager Syed Muhammad Danial Syed Shakir at the KL-Seremban bound North-South Expressway (NSE) in a road rage incident four years ago.

00:00 A former IT executive was sentenced to 16 years in prison by the Shah Alam High Court
00:05 on Thursday for causing the death of bank manager Syed Mohammed Daniel Syed Shakir at
00:11 the KL Seremban-bound North-South Highway in a road rage incident four years ago.
00:17 Judge Julia Ibrahim ordered the sentence on 45-year-old Yuwei Liang to start from the
00:23 date of his arrest on August 10, 2019.
00:26 While delivering her verdict, Judge Julia said the court had taken into consideration
00:31 the mitigating factors put forth, including Yu's background and his cooperation during
00:36 the investigation.
00:38 She added, "The court also weighed the impact statement from the victim's family and that
00:43 it was indeed a great tragedy that has befallen and impacted all parties, either directly
00:50 or indirectly.
00:51 At the same time, the court has to emphasize the importance of public interest in such
00:56 a case and mete out a deterrent sentence that will serve as a lesson to the public."
01:02 Yu was initially charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
01:07 However, in delivering her judgment last Tuesday, Judge Julia amended the charge to Section
01:13 304(a) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
01:19 When met by the press, Syed Mohammed Daniel's wife expressed disappointment over the prison
01:24 sentence.
01:26 "Finally, after four and a half years, after my husband, Syed Mohammed Daniel bin Syed
01:33 Shafiq, we have finally come to the end.
01:37 It has been completed.
01:40 Alhamdulillah, there is a little bit of disappointment because the judge changed the sentence from
01:53 Section 302 to 304(a).
01:57 So we do hope that the public prosecutor will appeal.
02:04 Nevertheless, we respect the court's judgment and decision.
02:10 I hope that this won't happen to anyone else.
02:14 I hope that this case will set a precedent and lesson, especially to the police."

02:31 On August 10, 2019, Yu was involved in a fender-bender with the deceased, which led to a high-speed
02:38 chase that escalated into a fight.
02:40 The deceased bashed Yu's car with a baseball bat, and Yu then accelerated his vehicle,
02:46 pinning the man between the car and the road divider.
02:49 Syed Mohammed Danial later died at the Nilai Medical Center.
