West Ham boss David Moyes reacts to their 2-1 win over Tottenham
Transcript
00:00 At 1-0, Tottenham were playing well. Was that a good 1-0?
00:06 You could smell blood coming out of Tottenham.
00:09 It was a really good 1-0 because Tottenham were so good.
00:12 They played really, really well, which they have been doing against every team.
00:17 I've watched them against Aston Villa and the games they've had and the result against Man City.
00:22 I said it in my interview, I think Tottenham are as good as any side in the Premier League at the moment.
00:29 We've done a containing job to try and make sure that we could always be in the game.
00:35 Is Thursday becoming your favourite day? Because last year, this year in Europe, it's got to be your favourite day.
00:43 If you look at how we've done over two years, the amount of games,
00:46 and if you look at the extra games we've had compared to most teams, Tottenham included,
00:52 it's incredible the amount of games we've had.
00:55 The praise goes to the players for how they keep turning out.
00:57 Yet we've chopped and changed. Nearly all the questions you asked me before games,
01:02 "You've made seven changes, David."
01:04 It's very difficult in a lot of the European games not to make changes when you know you've got games of this quality and this level to play in.
01:11 I thought some of our players found it tough tonight.
01:13 The speed, the intensity, the resilience which we needed to stay in the game and stick at it.
01:21 Hopefully, it will show in a few of the lessons of what the Premier League is all about.
01:25 You wanted more personality in the team. Did you see that in the second half?
01:32 Yes, I saw it in the first half a bit as well because we defended better than what we'd done.
01:36 We had to defend the box and defend around the box.
01:39 It wasn't as good as we'd have liked. I thought in the second half we stepped up a bit.
01:44 If we had opened up too quickly, Tottenham could easily have played through you and cut you open.
01:50 We had to be mindful that we weren't going to get opened up and be played through and make it really difficult for them to score.
01:58 Is it nice to get an away win? A big six-sided name. You don't get too many of them.
02:03 It's nice to get it.
02:05 Yes, I think so. I think it's nice to win any away game really.
02:08 It's not an easy thing. I think it's even harder now in the Premier League.
02:11 Tottenham are a really, really good side.
02:14 We got a result tonight against a very good team.
02:21 Is it tough to win any away game?
02:26 Yes. Jared was a little bit off at the weekend.
02:32 I think he'd been out for three or nearly four weeks since he got injured.
02:36 He just looked as if he was a bit rusty before he came back.
02:39 I thought tonight we swapped him and Mo in different positions at different times in the game.
02:46 But when it fell to Jared, I thought, 'Oh, wow, he's got himself another goal.'
02:51 I want Jared to keep… Obviously, I want him to do it for us.
02:55 But I think also, as long as he keeps doing it, he'll keep in Gareth's mind as well because he's someone who can play forward or wide and score goals.
03:04 In a competition where you're going to need people to score goals, hopefully in the summer, maybe Jared will be part of that.
03:09 But as long as he keeps scoring for me at the moment, that's the most important thing.
03:13 You talked about all that change of style and stuff, but coming here, you're under Kosh for such a long time.
03:19 Is there an extra kick when you do dig out and put a result like that?
03:24 No, I think the manager here has done an unbelievable job.
03:27 I said before, I'm surprised that a lot of people didn't think he would do well when he came here.
03:33 But over the years, I've had games like this. I've had to be resilient, hard to beat, find a way of getting a result through my career.
03:41 If you've got the best players and you've got that, then you can do that. Tottenham will get a really good group of players.
03:47 I think we've got a good group of players as well, but there's still a few of them still learning the ropes of the Premier League for what we need.
03:54 So, a great win for us.
03:56 David, you've won one loss in eight now. Do you feel that there is a momentum building in your riding?
04:08 Yes, a little bit. If I'm being honest and I'm saying it in front of the lads who see me regularly, I'll tell you this.
04:14 I'm not being pleased with the way we're playing, but we're trying. We're attempting to find a way.
04:20 We're scoring. I think there's only one game this season we've not scored in. I've been a bit disappointed that we've not defended well enough.
04:28 Tonight was the opposite. Tonight was more of what you're going to have to do against the top six sides, maybe.
04:34 That's how you're going to have to find a way of getting a result.
04:37 I don't think we're going to come and be wide open and be able to play against some of these teams.
04:41 But, look, we've got a little bit of a run going at the moment. If we could keep it going, it would be great.
04:46 We've got big games coming up, as always. Tonight, we'll be playing Thursday, which is good, which was mentioned there.
04:53 But to be on Thursday and Sunday again, I don't think anybody really enjoys that scheduling.
04:59 What do you think of the play of that half-time? It was one loss.
05:03 Well, I was pretty pleased that we weren't more than a goal down, even though I didn't think we'd given up too many chances.
05:11 But they were closing in. And even if I go to the second half, I can think of Rick Carlsen missing a big chance.
05:16 I can't really think of much after that. I thought it was the other side.
05:22 I thought when we got the ball, we gave it away after two passes. We gave it away after one.
05:26 There were opportunities for us to play people in. We didn't take it on.
05:31 We did a couple of 2v1s in full-back in wide areas to create better opportunities to cross it or get balls in behind.
05:38 And we missed all those opportunities, which would have given us a bit more confidence, a bit more of the ball.
05:44 A couple of things didn't go. A couple of ricochets came off.
05:49 Laddie's legs didn't go for a corner. We could have built up some momentum.
05:53 But overall, at half-time, I knew we were right in the game and we had to stay in the game.
06:00 As it was, we got a bit lucky with the ricochet of the ball, which felt ajared.
06:09 And sometimes you need a bit of good fortune in football. Very fine lines went our way tonight.
06:15 It was a brilliant win for us.
06:18 There was a lot of pressing from Keelerson and Bowen in the second half. Did that take a stretch?
06:21 Yes, we tried to get a little bit higher. But again, as I said, if you go and press Tottenham, it's easy saying it.
06:27 Until they do it and they pass it round you. That's why I was saying, if you look at most of the teams who have played against them,
06:32 it's very hard to... It's only Man City have probably gone toe-to-toe.
06:36 Or I could look at it that way. Tottenham went toe-to-toe with Man City.
06:41 I think it's very hard to play against Tottenham the way they're playing.
06:44 OK, all good.
06:45 Cheers.
06:46 I'll go and get a towel outside.
