The gunman shot dead by police after he killed three professors and wounded a fourth at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), was a financially struggling academic who was denied employment by several higher education institutions in Nevada, police said on Thursday (Dec 7).

00:07 Our suspect is identified as 67 year old Anthony James Polito, P-O-L-I-T-O.
00:15 He lived in Henderson, Nevada.
00:16 He had a previous criminal history of computer trespass out of Virginia in 1992.
00:22 Detectives learned prior to the shooting,
00:25 the suspect had earlier visited a Henderson post office and
00:29 sent 22 letters to various university personnel across the country with no
00:34 return address.
00:35 We are currently working with the postal inspector and
00:38 our federal partners to begin processing these letters.
00:41 I wanna stress that we're still learning a lot about this suspect,
00:44 still trying to understand motive.
00:46 We know he applied numerous times for a job with several Nevada higher
00:50 education institutions and was denied each time.
