Iowa coach zoom presser

00:00 So obviously coming off of the emotional game at Iowa State, I was really happy with our
00:07 defense in that game.
00:08 I thought we played really well.
00:10 But obviously we can play so much better offensively than we did.
00:14 Opening up Big Ten play in December still feels a little weird to me.
00:19 But going to Wisconsin, a place that we've had some good success over the years, we've
00:25 gotten some really great recruits out of there.
00:28 And in fact, on Friday night I'm going to go see two of our commits play against each
00:32 other, which is really unique and fun for me to be able to do that on Friday night.
00:38 So Saturday night, getting ready to play a Wisconsin team that has improved over the
00:50 years, I believe.
00:51 They have a really good center in Sarah Williams.
00:54 Brooke Schrammach has been about a four-year starter for them.
00:58 Ronnie Porter's playing really good at the point guard position for them.
01:02 So I think it's going to be a sold-out arena.
01:05 I'm interested to see what percent Iowa fans and what percent Wisconsin fans.
01:12 I feel like when we went up there in the past, it's been about 40 Iowa, 60 Wisconsin.
01:19 And so I think it'll be really interesting to see that in a sold-out arena, if that holds
01:24 true or what happens.
01:26 I have no idea what to expect.
01:28 Kyle, go ahead.
01:30 Yeah, Lisa, now that you've had a day or so to digest the win over Iowa State, what sort
01:39 of things do you take out of it that were good about that game?
01:42 And what things have you come out of it thinking, "We need to get better at this"?
01:46 Yeah, I thought that we played very well defensively.
01:51 I was extremely happy with our defense.
01:53 Again, zero three-pointers made in the second half, and that's a team that kind of thrives
02:00 on three-pointers.
02:03 Their leading scorer, Audie Crick, had four field goals at half.
02:06 She ended up with four field goals.
02:08 So I was really happy with our defense.
02:12 I think that's a really difficult place to play, and I thought we handled the adversity
02:17 of them coming back on us and handling that momentum really well in a tough place.
02:24 And so I thought there was a lot of really good things that happened with that game.
02:28 But I think, yeah, we need to do a better job of getting more people involved.
02:34 That was a low-assist game for us with only 13 assists, and that's something that we thrive.
02:40 We play the best when we're around that 20-assist mark.
02:45 Susan?
02:47 Just sort of a follow-up.
02:50 Kaitlin took almost half of your shot, and I realize she is a special player, and you're
03:00 going to leave her in there to try to get something done.
03:05 But under the circumstances of that game and the way they were playing defense, how do
03:11 you get more people involved?
03:13 What are the things you guys can do to affect that?
03:19 I think just keep talking about it with them.
03:23 People have to make themselves available for shots, and people have to take shots when
03:27 they're available, when they're there.
03:30 And so Kaitlin is going to do Kaitlin things, and she's going to do whatever it takes for
03:35 us to win a game, and I'm very happy about that.
03:39 That's something you want out of a star player like that.
03:43 You want kids that say, "I want the ball in my hand, and let's go."
03:46 But I thought Kate Martin did some great things down the line.
03:49 She took the ball to the hole hard.
03:54 And obviously, we weren't shooting threes very well, and that's usually what you have
03:58 to do to win at Aims, is to shoot threes well.
04:03 We didn't, but we still shot better than they did from three-point range.
04:08 Jeff?
04:10 Yeah, Coach, you started to talk about it a little bit.
04:14 Just tell me a little bit about Kate's surge here a little bit.
04:18 I mean, the first four games, she was scoring about seven points a game.
04:21 The last six, it's about double that.
04:25 Is she just being more assertive, or what's rolling for her right now?
04:31 Yeah, I mean, in that Iowa State game, her adjusted field goal percentage, 58 percent,
04:36 free steal.
04:39 I thought she did a great job defensively for us.
04:44 I think it's just a matter of, she understands this team needs her, where maybe last year
04:50 we didn't need her.
04:52 She was kind of that third and fourth option for us, and now she's understanding that she
04:56 might be option number two this year, especially with Hannah being out.
05:01 I think it's just more of, she understands what this team needs out of her, and she's
05:05 very confident in performing that duty.
05:09 Andy?
05:10 Hey, thanks, Bailey.
05:12 Hey, Lisa, how are you?
05:15 Good, Andy.
05:18 Before the FDU game a month ago, you talked about how it wasn't that easy to schedule
05:22 opponents during the non-conference part of the season.
05:26 Would you have liked to have had maybe a few more games against some top 10 teams?
05:31 And if so, is there a difficulty in scheduling those games?
05:36 Oh, I think our schedule's been great.
05:39 I mean, I think we'll play enough of those in the Big Ten season.
05:44 I don't think we have to be worried about that at all.
05:46 We played Virginia Tech, we played Kansas State twice, we played Iowa State on their
05:50 home court.
05:51 So no, I think our schedule was really, really good.
05:54 Gotcha.
05:55 Thank you.
05:56 I think we're sixth in the power rankings right now.
05:59 That includes our schedule.
06:01 Dargan?
06:02 Yeah, at least anybody who's covered you guys for a little bit knows that the winning streak
06:08 over Wisconsin has gotten pretty lengthy.
06:14 And knowing that whenever they do in that losing streak, it's probably going to come
06:18 out of the blue a little bit.
06:22 I know it's not something you have to stress with your team, but when you dive into Wisconsin,
06:26 is there anything that stands out as to how they've maybe improved a little bit and what
06:32 they have to offer on Sunday?
06:36 I think their defense is pretty good.
06:38 I think they're pretty intense with their defense.
06:41 They're very balanced in scoring, and I think any time a team is balanced like that, they're
06:45 harder to defend.
06:47 They have four people that shoot the three really well, actually, I mean, really five,
06:52 five people that shoot the three ball really well.
06:55 But I think it's their balanced scoring.
06:57 Yes, Sarah Williams leads them, but after that, I mean, they're very, very balanced
07:04 with four people in double figures nearly, and then two more right there.
07:09 And so anybody can hurt you, and I think that's what concerns you about a team like Wisconsin
07:13 is you're all focused on Williams, but any of those other people can hurt you, and their
07:17 three-point shooting is so much better this year than it's been in the past.
07:22 Jeff?
07:24 Just a couple quick things as Big Ten gets going here.
07:29 Has anything really surprised you, good or bad, you know, as far as teams in the conference?
07:34 And also, are you going solo to McFarland on Friday or Saturday?
07:39 Is the team accompanying you, or is that just you and the staff?
07:43 We asked if the team could accompany us, and our compliance office said no, that that would
07:47 be, even though they've committed to us already, that that would be an illegal activity for
07:53 recruiting, so they put the shutdown on that for us.
07:57 I think it would have been really nice, and the cool thing about it, Caitlin came to us
08:01 and asked us, "Can we do this?"
08:03 I think it's really neat when your players, especially, you know, seniors, are saying,
08:10 you know, "Can we go do this?"
08:12 Because that would be really fun for our team to support our future teammates.
08:16 So that's too bad that they put the kibosh on that, but they did.
08:22 And then, what was the, you asked that and then you asked this.
08:25 Just looking at the Big Ten.
08:27 Oh, the Big Ten, yeah.
08:29 You know, I think Minnesota, I think that's, you know, impressive with what they've done
08:34 up there with a new coach.
08:36 Michigan State, what they've done with a new coach has been very good.
08:42 I think the usual suspects of Indiana, Ohio State, you know, they're doing what everybody
08:50 thought that they would do.
08:53 You know, Illinois continues to be really good.
08:55 Now, I mean, I just really haven't, I really haven't paid too much attention other than
09:02 scores.
09:03 I don't really watch other than our future opponents, and like whoever interests me on
09:10 TV at the time.
09:13 Susan?
09:15 Coach, Hannah Stolke had a, drew a foul, so to speak, from Audie Crooks.
09:24 And the TV people were laughing about it as a flop.
09:31 Where did she learn that?
09:34 That isn't supposed to be posed.
09:35 I watched it, and I don't see where they're saying it's a flop.
09:37 I thought it was a great call, finally.
09:40 I mean, she lifts her arm and shoves Hannah.
09:42 I mean, how can that be a flop?
09:45 I mean, I don't understand the commentary on that.
09:51 I thought it was a good call, and I thought Hannah got shoved.
09:56 Can I just do one follow-up?
10:01 Go ahead.
10:04 It just, well, it's about sort of the physics of the post players.
10:09 When is it a foul?
10:10 I mean, Audie Crooks backs her defender all the way, you know, several feet, all the way
10:17 to the basket.
10:18 When does the offensive player have to stop?
10:22 Can she just keep muscling her way in?
10:25 When the official decides to call, you know, displacement.
10:30 I mean, that's, you know, I mean, we have just as much right to that area as she does,
10:36 so it's kind of the official's call.
10:40 All right, guys.
10:41 Thanks for hopping on.
10:42 Thanks, Coach Glitter.
10:43 Absolutely.
10:44 Thanks.
10:45 Everybody have a good weekend.
