00:00 He understood what we wanted to do.
00:04 He thought about it for not that long and he said,
00:09 "Okay, I'll do it."
00:11 There were little adjustments with Andy and Christina discussing.
00:20 >> There were a lot of conversations because he was excited as much as I
00:25 was about bringing Batman to life, but there was a lot to talk about.
00:30 Where do we find Bruce Wayne 30 years after we saw him for the last time?
00:37 I wanted to find Bruce in a place where people do not expect to find him,
00:46 a moment of his life.
00:49 That's why basically I get Batman I quit some years ago for a reason that you won't see in
00:56 the movie, but you're going to see it in the deleted scenes, scene where they explain why
01:01 Batman quit.
01:03 >> You can't just tease that, Andy.
01:06 You can't just dangle that out there.
01:07 That's mean.
01:09 >> Let's say he did something that he's not proud of.
01:14 He made a mistake.
01:15 >> Okay.
01:16 >> The very reason that he knows so much.
01:20 When you were watching the movie, you didn't wonder how does he know so much about time travel.
01:27 >> Oh, no.
01:31 >> He must have made a similar mistake then.
01:36 >> Well, maybe he tried to fix things.
01:39 >> To fix his parents from being killed.
01:41 >> To save his parents.
01:41 >> Yes.
01:42 >> Whoa.
01:43 >> Andy, wait.
01:46 Did you film a scene of Keaton going back to that moment?
01:51 >> No, I didn't.
01:51 I never said that he achieved it.
01:55 >> True.
01:56 >> I never managed to travel back in time, but I think he made a mistake
02:01 that he couldn't live with.
02:03 Of course, if you see the movie, he says he has a whole narrative about it.
02:10 He says, well, Gotham, when the Barry's asking,
02:14 how, what, you don't want to be Batman anymore?
02:15 He's like, well, Gotham doesn't need me anymore.
02:18 It's one of the safest cities in the world.
02:20 Bullshit.
02:22 [ Laughter ]
02:27 In one universe, Gotham is the safest city in the world.
02:31 >> Right.
02:31 >> It's a thing that you can believe or not.
02:34 And in this scene, in this deleted scene, they're traveling to Siberia.
02:41 And the two Barry's are like, you know, whispering in the back.
02:44 It's like, well, anyway, I'm not going to spoil it.
02:49 Barbara!
02:49 >> Let him talk!
02:54 >> He was right there!
02:55 >> He was right there.
02:56 Anyway, there's --
02:58 >> Look at this.
02:59 >> This all comes from --
03:01 [ Laughter ]
03:04 Yeah, this all comes from discussing the Batman,
03:09 the state that we're Batman in.
03:12 And this is one of the discussions I had with --
03:14 ongoing conversations I had with Keaton.
03:18 And we finally agreed that we would find Bruce in that state, at that time,
03:26 having quit being Batman and a reluctant hero.
03:29 I needed that transformation to happen in this movie.
03:32 Definitely didn't want Bruce Wayne that was, you know,
03:38 basically in front of his fireplace, just like,
03:40 stirring a glass of whiskey, just like that thing happened.
03:44 Anyway, but we had a beautiful -- it was beautiful work that I did with --
03:50 that we had with Keaton.
03:52 And of course, it's so much fun, you know, to speculate on things that are sort of so iconic,
03:59 which is not only the character, Bruce Wayne, but also what is the future --
04:03 what was the future of that movie?
04:05 You know, what --
04:07 it's like -- and you can see it in the design of things.
04:10 You see the Batcave, you see the costume, the Batman suit, the Batwing.
04:18 They all have different alterations that talk to you about an evolution in his work as Batman.
04:27 All the years that he continued being Batman after we last saw him in Batman Returns.
04:32 It's like a nightmare sequence. It's a nightmare sequence Batman suit looked like almost.
04:37 Yeah.
04:39 The only thing that didn't change is the Batmobile.
04:44 I wanted to keep that basically untouched,
04:48 because it's one of the funny things that you really don't want to change.
