00:02 Velodromes, our cathedrals of speed.
00:11 No start, no end.
00:16 This is where all the pain happens.
00:18 It's amazing to see how far Velodromes have come,
00:24 from their humble beginnings to this.

00:30 When you see those boards,
00:31 do you just remember the pain of training
00:33 or do you remember the glory of winning?
00:34 The bit for me that really brings it back
00:37 is when you hear the beeps.
00:39 Without this Velodrome being built in 1994,
00:42 we would have no Olympic program.
00:44 Since then, GB athletes have won
00:46 more than 25 gold medals at Olympic Games,
00:50 giving this building the nickname, The Medal Factory.
00:54 Over the last 10 years, it's just gone.
00:56 We retired and then it got really good.
00:57 It got really good then, didn't it?
00:58 You know, there were consistently gold medalists.
01:01 That's the pressure now is to continue that.
01:03 It's a safe environment to start cycling in.
01:05 Obviously, you are riding in for 45 degree banking,
01:07 but there's no cars in here.
01:09 There's also something in being comfortable
01:10 going at 60K an hour without brakes.
01:12 We have a thing called a perpendicular speed.
01:16 If you don't go fast enough, you fall off.
01:18 You haven't reached the perpendicular speed.
01:19 You haven't reached it.
01:20 I'm Rob Hales.
01:24 Quite a while ago, I won one or two medals
01:26 on Velodromes around the world.
01:27 I'll let you have that one on the photo.
01:31 So why don't you come on a little journey with me
01:33 to find out why I think they're so important.
01:36 Velodromes themselves and the buildings that house them.
