00:03 Congratulations to the bar examiners, to our new lawyers,
00:10 including Rose, who is now 62 years old, and is now a lawyer.
00:19 [Dramatic music]
00:40 And when it came out, she cried and cried.
00:49 Thank you Lord! Thank you!
00:51 Lord, thank you so much!
00:53 [Dramatic music]
00:57 Thank you Lord!
01:00 But one of the 3,812 bar passers-by,
01:05 was really a crybaby, Ms. Rose.
01:10 [Crying]
01:13 I'm not doing this!
01:15 Who passed?
01:16 Me!
01:18 Who will now be known as Attorney Rosula Calacala.
01:23 It was her first time taking a bar exam.
01:26 She passed right away at the age of 62 years old.
01:31 She is now a senior citizen.
01:33 I'm so happy to be an attorney all of my life.
01:37 Thank you Lord!
01:38 For those who want to fulfill their dreams, watch the story of Mother Rose, our new lawyer.
01:47 [Dramatic music]
01:49 Here in the small town of Jones Isabela, Mother Rose lives inside their home.
01:55 This corner is full of books.
01:59 I read all of them. I still have a lot to read because I read a lot online.
02:04 Before she was able to hold the Kodal, or the book that contains all of the Philippine laws,
02:11 Mother Rose preferred pocket books.
02:15 It's up to you to write, to have a frame of mind when you read.
02:20 Your English is really good, which is a great factor in the bar exam.
02:26 To have knowledge, you have to read.
02:29 I was taught that even if you have a printed copy of the book, you have to read it.
02:36 She loves to read. She passed it to her children, Mark, Ruth, and Jyre.
02:44 Every weekdays, when we go to Santiago City, my children are there.
02:50 My children also love to read because they can see me.
02:54 She's really kind. In school, she really supports us to study.
02:59 Even after her children graduated, Mother Rose still continues to work.
03:04 She serves in their local government.
03:07 I used to be an employee of a bank. I became a school director of a school.
03:13 But our former mayor said, "Why are you here? You're old. You have to come to Jones."
03:19 Even if your salary is small, you can just live in the municipality.
03:24 I took that opportunity because my children are done.
03:27 My husband is the only one left in the house. It's really a blessing.
03:31 Most of the time that I was in the municipality, I was really taught to be a scholar, to be an LGU.
03:37 And every day, she serves in the government.
03:41 Mother Rose was moved by the lack of lawyers.
03:45 I want to help my constituents in Jones, Isabela because there are no lawyers living there.
03:50 Maybe I'm the only one who can survive there.
03:53 Because young lawyers have a lot of opportunities in the cities.
03:57 This is what pushed Mother Rose to try to become a lawyer.
04:01 Since the time of my children, I was their tutor.
04:05 When I arrived, even if I was really tired, I have to tutor three small kids.
04:10 I still cook. There's no one to help me.
04:13 So after they graduated, they have a job.
04:17 She made a lot of sacrifices for us.
04:19 We were still young. She really had to put us first.
04:23 What else can I do with my life?
04:25 From 65 after the retirement, what can I do for more or less 30 years of my life?
04:31 I have nothing to do. I just have to work.
04:33 Why not study?
04:35 I thought from the beginning of going to law school, I'm not smart.
04:41 But I'm patient. I will do everything to get what I want.
04:47 So I have to double time.
04:49 Every time I'm in a car, I'm in a meeting, when my boss orders me, I have a code.
04:57 Actually, every day of your life, you want to give up in law school.
05:00 But if you started one thing, you should finish it.
05:04 So I didn't give up.
05:06 I saw her hardships. I told her, "Don't work anymore. Just stay at home."
05:12 Day and night, you will see her perseverance.
05:16 It's very hard to be a law student.
05:19 You have to memorize laws.
05:21 Because I know I'm very weak in memory, I have to read, read, read, read.
05:27 Every day of your life, if you're a law student, you don't want to anymore.
05:31 You give up. You give up.
05:34 But you shouldn't give up.
05:36 But in 2020, the biggest challenge came, the pandemic.
05:42 I really gave up.
05:44 Our exam was online.
05:46 I couldn't answer because I was a COVID patient.
05:49 I let go of the ballpoint pen.
05:51 I said, "Daddy, I'll stop. It's up to the teachers to fail you."
05:56 You know, my professors were very considerate during that time.
06:01 They knew that I was a COVID patient. They gave me a 75.
06:05 My husband was always there to help me.
06:09 During my law school days, my husband was the one who did the housework.
06:16 Until 2022, Rose finished her law school.
06:22 But to become a lawyer, she had to pass one of the most difficult bar examinations.
06:30 Your answers were not yet certain.
06:33 But I said, "Lord, I always pray after the bar exam and up to the time the results come out,
06:42 I pray that you use the bar examiner to pass me."
06:48 But Rose was not a pious person.
06:51 Especially not all of her prayers were answered.
06:57 Rose was born early in her life.
07:00 She was only 10 years old when she became a member of the household.
07:05 My father died when I was 8 years old.
07:08 My mother was the only one who took care of us.
07:11 Every opportunity, she would see someone who wanted to teach me.
07:16 She sends me off to those people.
07:19 I was 10 years old. I helped them wherever I went to study.
07:25 Our food was oil.
07:28 Now, we remember that those were ricado.
07:31 But for us, that was our food.
07:34 In 1984, she graduated Commerce in Northeastern College, Santiago, Isabela.
07:41 The following year, she became a certified public accountant.
07:46 It is not in vain that it is difficult to finish your studies.
07:51 Just don't be ashamed to be an assistant or to work.
07:55 In 1990, Rose became a family member.
07:58 And a few decades later, she was appointed as a lawyer.
08:06 But it seems that fate really took her.
08:11 Because a few months before the bar exams,
08:14 I was chosen.
08:15 This is painful. Everything here is painful.
08:19 I was lying down for five months and I was sweating.
08:22 Imagine the strain of the eyes when lying down.
08:25 I endured it because I wanted to be a lawyer.
08:28 There is another one.
08:29 My mother died in February.
08:31 Imagine if your mother died every day.
08:34 Even if you sweat, you will cry.
08:36 But I said, "This is not a distraction for me, my mother's death."
08:40 But before sleep, I remember my mother.
08:43 All the exams were very difficult.
08:48 I didn't know how to start the sentence.
08:51 What I did was I did my best to answer it to myself.
08:56 But when I was in the Supreme Court, I will go there because I will just watch.
09:01 I was just here in Manila, so I said I will just watch what will happen.
09:06 So when the result came out, in an instant,
09:11 all her hardships came back to her.
09:16 [Music]
09:20 [Crying]
09:21 Thank you, Lord!
09:22 [Crying]
09:25 [Crying]
09:28 When I saw my name, I was so surprised.
09:32 I didn't expect that I would pass.
09:35 After I saw my name, I thought, "Oh, Lord, thank you, Lord."
09:43 Thank you, Lord, I will have no more regrets.
09:46 I will have no more regrets.
09:48 [Crying]
09:49 Oh, my God!
09:51 [Crying]
09:55 I didn't expect that I would pass.
09:58 Everything that is happening to us now is really a blessing.
10:02 We take everything to God that everything has a purpose.
10:07 I want to tell her that I'm very proud of her for taking the leap of faith.
10:13 If I compare myself to now, I'm so far away, I can't help anymore.
10:19 I'm still an attorney. I didn't expect to be an attorney all of my life.
10:25 [Music]
10:29 God has a purpose. He will serve other people.
10:33 [Music]
10:36 This Friday, Rose returned to their hometown in Jones, Isabela.
10:42 What she didn't know is that she prepared a surprise for her friends and family.
10:48 Congratulations!
10:51 [Cheering]
10:53 Thank you, God!
10:55 [Crying]
10:57 I didn't expect that I would pass.
11:00 I didn't expect that I would pass.
11:02 Congratulations!
11:05 [Clapping]
11:06 One by one, Rose's friends embraced her.
11:10 She couldn't help but cry.
11:13 This is my husband!
11:15 [Crying]
11:16 Without him, I wouldn't be who I am now.
11:19 I'm so grateful to you for having welcomed me this way as an attorney, Rosoladi Calacala.
11:28 [Clapping]
11:30 [Music]
11:34 Her mother brought her to the school where she finished her law degree.
11:41 [Cheering]
11:46 Her professor visited her.
11:48 I was really confident that you will make it. I have no doubt about it.
11:54 My God! Our president is here!
11:59 And the school's president, where she was also a witness as an assistant.
12:04 Many people will be inspired.
12:07 I think it's not too late to dream of becoming a lawyer.
12:12 My advice to them if you want to become a lawyer, it's 100% commitment.
12:18 All of your energy, all of your time, just focus.
12:23 Train yourself as a law student so that when you go to court, you will be able to fight for your love life.
12:32 How much more of the life, limb, and freedom of other people.
12:37 So you should have a strong heart.
12:39 In our life, while we are aging, while we are senior citizens,
12:44 so that society won't look down on us and say, "Oh, she's a senior citizen, she's useless."
12:49 No, let's make the remaining years of our life productive.
12:54 It is really the ability to live in age or state that is not measured.
13:00 A person with ability, intelligence, and a good heart will do everything for their dreams to be fulfilled.
13:11 I'm done with my best years of my life.
13:14 But my best years is yet to come because I didn't expect to become a lawyer.
13:20 But there are so many chances that I might die.
13:24 The worst COVID patient that is about to die, why did God spare me?
13:29 There must be some purpose why God spared me from death.
13:34 Thank you, Lord!
13:36 Oh my God!
13:38 Oh my God!
13:40 Oh my God!
13:42 [Music]
13:45 Thank you so much, Kapuso!
