Iowa post player interview
Transcript
00:00 - It's been a tough week, a couple of losses,
00:03 and then come home and lose as well.
00:04 What have you guys learned this week
00:06 and how do you move forward and make progress?
00:08 - Yeah, I mean, like you said,
00:09 obviously a tough week losing three in a row
00:12 and, you know, coming into the week,
00:13 I think we were feeling confident
00:15 and hoping to pick up at least a couple of wins.
00:18 Obviously that didn't happen, a little bit frustrating.
00:20 I think we just got to remain positive,
00:23 continue to, you know, attack practice
00:25 and address what we need to address.
00:28 And yeah, I still feel very confident,
00:31 obviously kind of early woes of the season,
00:33 but I'm totally, you know, feeling great
00:35 about the guys we have in our locker room
00:37 and what we can do moving forward.
00:39 - They hit you with that 11-0
00:43 in the first part of the second half.
00:45 You guys had come out and scored the first two.
00:48 What changed there?
00:50 - Yeah, I think their guys,
00:53 like their main guys, McDaniel and Kamawu,
00:57 you know, we held them, I think, scoreless
01:00 in the first half,
01:01 and I thought we did a good job defensively on them.
01:04 We let Reid get going,
01:05 which I heard he got to the free throw line,
01:09 got some easy buckets in transition.
01:10 So we knew their main guys would come out
01:12 and be super aggressive, try to match Reid's energy.
01:15 Obviously that happened.
01:17 We just need to find ways to string stops together.
01:20 And, you know, I think offensively in the first half,
01:22 we did a good job.
01:24 Things got a little bit stagnant
01:25 once they started scoring
01:26 and we got out of our transition game
01:28 and weren't able to run.
01:29 So similar to other games,
01:32 we got to find ways to get stops, get rebounds,
01:34 and flap the floor like we usually do.
01:37 - You guys are going to face probably a lot of guys
01:39 similar to Taurus,
01:40 just in the way that he's built in the Big Ten.
01:42 I mean, what do you feel like you guys need to do differently
01:45 I guess to be more effective defending?
01:48 - Just obviously not let them get easy ones.
01:51 I thought, you know, we helped up
01:53 and he got some easy dump-offs to get going.
01:55 And then, like I said, with him running in transition,
01:57 we work on that every day.
01:59 So we got to find ways to get back to our work early
02:02 and obviously not let those easy buckets happen.
02:05 - Ben, Tony referenced just you guys trying
02:08 to still figure some things out,
02:09 trying to gel a little bit for some of the offensive issues.
02:13 Would you agree with that?
02:14 Or what's your assessment of why things aren't going
02:16 the way you guys want them to?
02:17 - I think so.
02:18 We just need to flow a little bit better
02:18 and just read and react.
02:20 And sometimes we're moving a little too fast
02:22 and sometimes it's okay to assess and read what's going on
02:27 and make plays based on that.
02:29 And whether that be a good screen, getting a teammate open
02:33 or driving when you're able to drive.
02:35 And yeah, we're a little bit stagnant, like I said,
02:39 with not being able to get as many stops as we would like.
02:42 And things flow better when we're in our transition game
02:46 and can get going before defenses get set.
02:50 - How'd you feel the new starting lineup went
02:53 with you moving to the four and Owen at the five?
02:56 - I thought there was good energy.
02:57 Owen brought good energy.
02:57 Obviously, ran into a little bit of foul trouble,
03:00 but he brought a good spark
03:03 and provides a little bit more room protection
03:05 and rebounding, so.
03:06 - All right, thanks, Ben.
03:09 - Thanks, Ben.
03:09 Thank you.
