  • last year

00:37 replaced its competitor NBC with the Golden Globe ceremony in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, on January 7.
00:43 Lowest audience
00:45 The Globes, just behind the Oscars in terms of audience,
00:49 had gathered in 2023 only 6.3 million viewers,
00:53 a lowest audience in the history of the prize,
00:55 after 18 million early 2020, just before the Covid pandemic.
00:59 A collapse despite the heavyweight presence of the film industry such as Steven Spielberg, Colin Farrell, Brad Pitt or Michel Yeo.
01:07 This year, other big names, Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Gosling, are expected.
01:15 We could also see there the stars Paul Giamatti, Bradley Cooper, Timothée Chalamet and Natalie Portman.
01:22 Last January, Cate Blanchett had canceled the ceremony.
01:25 The Globes will also honor the TV series in succession and "The Last of Us".
01:30 These first awards of the season in the United States have lost their glow
01:34 due to accusations of racism and corruption,
01:37 and some critics of Hollywood judge that the reforms engaged pose new ethical questions.
01:41 For decades, the Golden Globes have been held, managed and attributed by the Association of Foreign Press of Hollywood (AHFPA).
01:50 An eclectic group of a hundred journalists covering the entertainment section for international media,
01:55 often criticized by industry professionals for their amateurism and opacity.
01:59 These backstage spikes burst on the big day in 2021,
02:03 when the Los Angeles Times revealed that the organization did not count any black people
02:07 and that its members accepted mirrored gifts.
02:09 The ceremony was then boycotted the following year by Hollywood and remains in search of redemption.
02:17 The Golden Globes were bought back in June by investors,
02:21 including the American billionaire Todd Bully.
02:23 The AHFPA was dissolved and a new plan was adopted to try to restore the prestige of the past.
02:28 Members of the former AHFPA are now employees of the new Golden Globe company,
02:33 paid to watch movies, vote and write articles for the organization's website.
02:39 A situation potentially bearing conflict of interest.
02:42 Especially since some of the new owners are key players in the industry.
02:48 Like the production company Panske Media,
02:50 to whom the Variety and The Hollywood Reporter magazines belong,
02:53 or the Eldridge company, which has a participation in the cinema studio at 24,
02:58 regularly in the list for Hollywood rewards.
03:01 "There is something wrong with having a Globe voter be paid to write on the Globe website
03:06 about an actor he could name for a Golden Globe that will be given on the stage of a ceremony
03:11 to the company he works for," the LA Times recently pointed out in an editorial.
03:16 For the newspaper, the new model seems to be a gigantic public relations machine.
03:20 But the new Golden Globes are defending themselves.
03:23 According to the organization,
03:25 paying a $75,000 salary to Hollywood voters
03:28 "allows them to end up with a vicious system,
03:31 where precarious, often independent journalists
03:33 accept sumptuous gifts and luxurious press trips,
03:36 all paid by the studios."
03:38 More than 200 non-member and therefore non-paid voters, from all over the world,
03:42 have also been named for more impartiality.
03:46 And the new board of directors includes former industry officials,
03:50 such as former Variety editor-in-chief Tim Gray.
