00:45 Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I invite all of my colleagues to join me and the members of the Nevada delegation
00:52 in honoring the three precious lives that were lost to a heinous act of gun violence on December 6, 2023
01:00 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where I taught in the Political Science Department for 35 years.
01:06 Patricia Navarro-Velez, an assistant professor of accounting at the university and a mother of four,
01:14 devoted her career to educating the next generation of business professionals,
01:19 particularly among underserved populations and minorities.
01:24 She is remembered by her infectious smile and her larger-than-life personality.
01:30 Chae Jang, known as "Cherry" Chang, a professor of management information systems
01:37 and devoted UNLV colleague for more than 20 years, was known for his even-keeled, positive and unwavering presence.
01:46 He is survived by his wife and two children.
01:50 Naoko Takemaru was an associate professor of Japanese studies and a noted author, academic, and award-winning educator.
02:00 In her 20th year at UNLV, Ms. Takemaru's colleagues remembered her as "line-hearted in kindness."
02:09 Today I stand here in solidarity with my colleagues from Nevada, with a heavy heart for the victims,
02:16 their families, and all of the UNLV students, faculty, and staff who experienced this horrific event.
02:24 Mr. Speaker, in a moment, I'll ask for a time of silence to honor the lives we lost
02:30 and uplift the UNLV community during this trying time.
02:35 I ask that we not only use this time to commemorate the important and selfless contributions
02:41 of each of these individuals who were part of the UNLV community,
02:45 and also to remember the heroic actions of our law enforcement,
02:50 but also to reflect on the pressing need to enact common-sense legislation
02:55 to protect our communities from the epidemic of gun violence.
02:59 I ask all of my colleagues to consider signing on to a resolution to this effect, which I'll be introducing tonight.
