Israel-Hamas War: India votes in favour of UN resolution for immediate ceasefire in Gaza | Oneindia

  • last year
The U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on December 12 to demand a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza in a strong demonstration of global support for ending the Israel-Hamas war. The vote also shows the growing isolation of the United States and Israel. The vote in the 193-member world body was 153 in favour, 10 against and 23 abstentions. The support was higher than for an Oct. 27 resolution that called for a “humanitarian truce” leading to a cessation of hostilities, where the vote was 120-14 with 45 abstentions. India was among the 153 members who voted in favour.

00:00 There is the endeavor to find a peaceful and lasting two-state solution to the longstanding
00:06 Palestine question.
00:09 In this extraordinarily difficult time is to strike the right balance.
00:15 India has voted in favor of the resolution.
00:18 There is an enormous humanitarian crisis and the large-scale loss of civilian lives, especially
00:25 of women and children.
00:26 The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on December 12 to demand a
00:31 humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza in a strong demonstration of global support for ending
00:36 the Israel-Hamas war.
00:37 The vote also shows the growing isolation of the United States and Israel.
00:41 The vote in the 193-member world body was 153 in favor, 10 against, and 23 abstentions.
00:48 The support was higher than for an October 27 resolution that called for a humanitarian
00:52 truce, leading to a cessation of hostilities, where the vote was 120-14, with 45 abstentions.
00:59 India was among the 153 members who voted in favor.
01:03 After the UN vetoed a resolution on the Security Council on Friday demanding a humanitarian
01:07 ceasefire, Arab and Islamic nations called for an emergency session of the 193-member
01:11 General Assembly to vote on a resolution making the same demand.
01:15 Unlike Security Council's resolutions, General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding.
01:20 But the Assembly's messages are also very important and reflect world opinion.
01:24 UN spokesperson Stephanie Dujarric said on Monday, "The General Assembly vote reflects
01:29 the growing isolation of the United States as it refuses to join demands for a ceasefire.
01:34 More than the UN or any other international organization, the U.S. is seen as the only
01:38 entity capable of persuading Israel to accept a ceasefire as its closest ally and biggest
01:43 supplier of weaponry."
01:45 In tougher language than usual, President Joe Biden warned before the vote that Israel
01:49 was losing international support because of its indiscriminate bombing of Gaza.
01:53 The resolution expresses grave concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation in
01:57 the Gaza Strip and the suffering of the Palestinian civilian population.
02:01 And it says Palestinians and Israelis must be protected in accordance with international
02:06 humanitarian law.
02:08 It also demands that all parties comply with international humanitarian law, notably with
02:12 regard to the protection of civilians, and calls for the immediate and unconditional
02:16 release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access.
02:21 The resolution makes no mention of Hamas, whose militants killed about 1,200 people
02:24 and abducted about 240 in the surprise attack in Syria on October 7 that set off the war.
02:29 One amendment proposed by the U.S. would have added a paragraph stating that the Assembly
02:33 unequivocally rejects and condemns the heinous terrorist attacks by Hamas.
02:38 A second amendment proposed by Austria would have added that the hostages are held by Hamas
02:42 and other groups and should be released immediately.
02:44 Both the amendments were voted down.
02:47 The war has brought unprecedented death and destruction, with much of northern Gaza obliterated,
02:51 more than 18,000 Palestinians killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
02:57 Seventy percent of them reportedly children and women, and over 80 percent of the population
03:01 of 2.3 million pushed from their homes.
