00:01 We have lost about half the coral colonies
00:04 of the Great Barrier Reef in the last two years alone.
00:08 Dr. Charlie Varon is the world's leading expert
00:10 on the Great Barrier Reef.
00:12 He's been studying it his entire career.
00:15 There are about 340 species of coral
00:18 on the Great Barrier Reef.
00:19 For years, Varon has been warning people
00:21 that global warming would eventually destroy the reef.
00:25 His worst fears came true in 2016,
00:28 when 30% of the reef was decimated
00:30 by warmer water temperatures.
00:33 It happened again this year,
00:34 when another 20% was bleached.
00:37 The first thing you notice is lack of color.
00:39 Everything goes white,
00:41 and then if you stick around for a couple of weeks
00:43 or months, the algae starts growing on the coral,
00:46 and it's just covered with slime.
00:48 To view the damage firsthand,
00:50 we traveled with Dr. Varon 20 miles out
00:53 to a section of the reef called Turtle Bay.
00:57 They call Varon the godfather of coral,
01:00 because he knows every nook and cranny of the reef.
01:02 From our boat, we spoke with him as he went below
01:07 to assess what had become of his life's work.
01:25 Charlie, is there a correlation between the condition
01:28 of any particular coral and the number of fish around it?
01:32 - Yeah.
01:33 Now if this was alive, this would have been crawling
01:36 with fish, and I can't see a single fish here.
