00:03 My name is Nafeez Mossadegh Ahmed.
00:18 I'm an international security analyst.
00:20 I've published extensively on terrorism, imperialism,
00:23 and conflict.
00:24 And in trying to understand mass violence,
00:27 I've been looking more deeply at the systemic and structural
00:29 issues, such as climate change, energy depletion, food
00:33 production, economic crisis, terrorism as a phenomenon,
00:37 the state's militarization of foreign policy,
00:39 and how these crises interact with one another,
00:42 and how they can also aggravate and radicalize conflicts.
00:44 My view, having looked at a lot of these trends,
00:51 is that some of the most worrying predictions
00:53 are most likely to be true.
00:55 If you look at these things in their totality, what we're
00:58 seeing is industrial civilization is unsustainable.
01:03 And all of these different crises
01:04 are really just different manifestations of the fact
01:07 that this civilization in its current form
01:10 cannot survive the 21st century.

01:15 I think the urgent question that we need to be asking ourselves
01:21 is, what comes after?
01:23 What is the post-carbon, post-peak world
01:26 going to look like?
01:27 And that is really up to us.
01:29 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:32 Aware.
01:50 Alert.
01:51 Alive.
