00:00 When I was young, I would often hike these hills.
00:05 I knew if I didn't get outside that I'd just want to cry.
00:10 My father was the oldest son of Ernest Hemingway.
00:13 Cheers!
00:14 It was kind of like the Kennedy family.
00:16 The Kennedy had these horrible tragedies,
00:18 and we were sort of the other American family
00:20 that had this horrible curse.
00:22 [music]
00:24 My grandfather, Ernest,
00:25 was one of the greatest writers of the 20th century,
00:28 and yet he suffered tremendous mental illness.
00:31 I come from seven suicides, perhaps more.
00:35 [music]
00:42 My sister, Margo, was obsessed with the whole mystery
00:46 of Ernest Hemingway.
00:47 [cheering]
00:49 I love bullfighting. I love great wine.
00:52 I love great living.
00:53 This is my grandfather's house.
00:55 He spent a lot of time there riding,
00:57 and that's where he took his life.
00:59 She idolized the very thing I hated about my family.
01:04 Great wine.
01:05 My parents fought all the time.
01:07 No.
01:08 I would clean up the blood, the glass.
01:11 We were good wasps, you know?
01:13 You don't speak about your problem.
01:15 I really haven't told you that much about the family
01:17 and all the suicide stuff,
01:18 because I don't think that I ever wanted you to feel
01:22 burdened by it.
01:24 I want to change the dynamic,
01:26 and I want to change the viewpoint
01:27 that it's not a family of tragedies.
01:28 It's actually a family of complete and total,
01:30 like, embrace of joy.
01:32 [music]
01:34 They say in spirituality,
01:35 you're done with something when it doesn't affect you anymore.
01:38 [music]
01:41 I'm not there yet.
