00:00 It felt like a world that I didn't know about, but I wanted to.
00:10 The originality of the screenplay is very appealing.
00:13 You broke the deal?
00:15 Yeah.
00:16 Ryan's written so many insane movies.
00:20 He's one of the best writers around.
00:23 The script itself, I think it's filled with strong characters who feel very real.
00:27 As soon as I started, I couldn't put it down.
00:44 It's so rare that you do a film where the director has lived the life that you're representing.
00:51 Eat your heart out, Ray!
00:55 I'm from a family of fishermen, my grandfather was a fisherman, my great uncle, my dad.
01:00 When I got out of college, I started fishing.
01:03 I ended up doing it for about a year and a half before I found out that you could learn
01:07 how to make movies.
01:08 My first day in New Bedford, Brian drove me around and he showed me, "Oh, this is the
01:12 street that I grew up on, and this is where Mabel grew up."
01:15 Every character in the movie, I can tell you exactly who they were in real life.
01:20 Most of the people in New Bedford are from there.
01:22 They grew up there, and there's this real sense of everybody's known everybody forever.
01:27 Hey, Mabel!
01:28 Where are you going?
01:29 I fish with guys that had difficult relationships with their dads.
01:32 I don't want to tangle with you right now.
01:34 I don't want to tangle with you, Ray!
01:36 I think it's about how difficult it is sometimes for people to say that they love each other,
01:41 especially men.
01:42 I never should have trusted you.
01:44 I do not understand the way you're built.
01:47 You built me.
01:48 Mabel here says, "You guys are one-timing, but if this works out..."
01:54 Finest Kind is a family drama disguised as a crime thriller.
01:57 The crime element of the movie puts everyone in a crucible and forces all these things
02:01 to come to a head.
02:02 There's no place to hide, really, so we get to see all that.
02:05 What happens if we get caught?
02:08 Getting caught is not an option.
02:13 Action!
02:14 Brian, I think, is probably the most respectful director I've ever worked with.
02:18 He's incredibly collaborative.
02:19 He's also such a sweetheart.
02:22 He has chosen, I think, wisely to let these scenes be discovered by actors as they play
02:29 them.
02:30 He really doesn't mind coming on set and playing with some of the words or sentences or going
02:34 for improv or, you know, switching things around.
02:37 He's just a joy to work with.
02:39 Brian has a very gentle management style.
02:41 He gets everything that he needs and he's very clear about what he wants, but he's just
02:45 a very kind guy.
02:46 Thank you, everyone.
02:48 I couldn't have done it without you guys.
02:50 Finest Kind is all about the sacrifices that you'll make for the ones you love.
02:55 Tommy, please?
02:56 You okay, Pop?
02:58 And how we try to find our way together.
03:02 Brian has found a way to deal with that in an original way.
03:06 Brian happens to be someone who comes with the life experience as well as the economy
03:16 and poetry of language and understanding of narrative of the human heart.
03:22 So, of course, you want to sit up straight, listen.
03:26 You live, you die.
03:30 It's in between that counts.
03:32 [Music]
