Cardiff looking to improve whilst Wrexham challenge at the top: Wales football roundup

  • last year
Cardiff City require improvements in their Championship form, with Wrexham sat in second place in League Two.
Transcript
00:00 Cardiff City sit 10th in the Championship on 30 points, but only 3 points away from
00:08 6th place Sunderland and a spot in the playoffs. Their recent results though have not been
00:13 up to scratch, they lost 1-0 at home to Birmingham City under their new manager Wayne Rooney
00:19 most recently, although they were on the winning end at home to Millwall on the 9th of December.
00:25 Upcoming fixtures include a trip to Hull, a trip to Sheffield Wednesday and then home
00:30 fixtures against Plymouth and Leicester. Hull are doing very well this season and are in
00:36 with a shot of being in the playoffs. Sheffield Wednesday presents an opportunity for Cardiff
00:40 to get back to winning ways, as does Plymouth at home, although Leicester will provide a
00:46 tough test on the 29th of December.
00:51 If Cardiff are serious about playoffs and promotion, their goal difference will have
00:56 to improve. It sits at +4, which is ok for the teams around them, but for the teams in
01:01 and amongst the playoffs, +12 and +15 are the norms.
01:06 They have also both won 9 games and lost 9 games, another element of their performances
01:12 to improve on. Whilst teams above them have not won too many more matches than Cardiff,
01:17 they have significantly fewer losses, picking up more draws along the way, highlighting
01:22 the importance of 'if it is not possible to win, do not lose'. Cardiff must improve
01:27 on this if they are to be serious contenders for the playoffs.
01:32 As mentioned then, Cardiff take a trip north and east to Hull in their next game.
01:40 As for Wrexham, well they're very much in a promotion race in League 2. Currently, they
01:45 sit second with 37 points, but only a point ahead of Notts County, who they came up with
01:51 last season, who sit in 6th place on 36. Runaway leaders are Stockport on 43.
01:59 Wrexham's recent form has been rather good, winning all but 2 games in November. In December,
02:05 they are yet to actually play in the league. They defeated Yeovil 3-0 in the FA Cup, before
02:11 losing to Burton in the EFL Trophy. Then a league game away at Forest Green Rovers
02:16 was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. In the rest of December, they are set to face
02:21 Colchester at home, and then Newport at home, before two away trips to round off the year
02:26 away at Swindon and Walsall. Wrexham have certainly had a fantastic year
02:32 in terms of football, getting promoted as champions from the National League, before
02:37 then challenging at the very top of League 2 shows just how much work behind the scenes
02:42 Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have done to transform Wrexham's fortunes. Some may
02:48 say that the Hollywood money gives them an unfair advantage, but those in Wales supporting
02:54 Wrexham will claim otherwise. Plenty of football still to be played, but they are certainly
03:01 on the path to back-to-back promotions.
