Coach Mike Woodson Recaps Indiana's 75-71 Loss to Kansas
Transcript
00:00 Mike, I think you guys pretty much held the lead consistently for about 35 minutes,
00:05 and then it just sort of felt like Kansas, like they made like maybe six of their last eight shots.
00:09 Just what did you see in that maybe last four or five minutes?
00:12 Was it them going up a level? Was it you guys maybe just running out of a little steam?
00:16 I don't think our defensive intensity was there the second half, like we started the game and finished the first half,
00:23 and they picked their defense up, and it was obvious they held us to 31 points and we gave up 43.
00:31 But for the most part, I thought we played a solid game, but they made the plays coming down the stretch.
00:38 The two threes that they made were huge, and then the two buckets Dickerson hit in the paint
00:43 was kind of the difference in the game coming down the stretch.
00:48 Okay, we're good and ready.
00:50 Galloway, I kind of put you guys on his back for a little while there.
00:54 Career high, was it something you guys thought you could take advantage of with him,
00:59 something you planned differently with him, or was that just kind of an individual effort, him stepping up tonight?
01:04 He had a good game, you know, and it was good to see because he's had his ups and downs this season,
01:14 but tonight he had a solid basketball game, and I just hope he can build on that.
01:20 Yeah, Coach, your thoughts on Ware's performance overall, the points and the rebounds,
01:27 and his defense on Hunter Dickerson for a majority of the time that he was out there?
01:31 Well, I thought he did a good job early on.
01:35 I thought the two buckets that we gave up, we gave up a layup to Adams, which we didn't take a foul.
01:43 All I mean was, and it was Ware that let him lay it in,
01:46 and then the two buckets that Dickerson got in the paint I thought was huge,
01:52 and I don't know if Ware was tired at that particular time,
01:55 but he just didn't battle him like he did the first half and throughout the first half.
02:01 I thought those two shots were huge for him coming down the stretch.
02:06 Coach, you mentioned that Kansas picked up their defense in the second half.
02:09 They held you guys to 33 percent from the field.
02:11 What kind of adjustments did they make to assist all you guys?
02:13 Well, I mean, we had Malik and McKenzie both in foul trouble.
02:20 You know, after we built the lead, we stayed around eight, nine, ten points in the second half early on,
02:27 and those two guys picked up fouls, so you had to pull them and try to prolong the game,
02:34 and I thought that was somewhat the difference, too.
02:36 They were able to capitalize on that.
02:40 Mike, I know there are absolutely no immoral victories in this program,
02:43 but that's the number two-ranked team in the country, and you took them nose to nose.
02:47 How much can you benefit from that going forward with these guys,
02:50 knowing that if they just played just a little bit better that they're capable of competing at that level?
02:57 Well, it's really the first game that we've had.
03:00 You know, we've been in a lot of close games, even the early games that we've had,
03:04 and we didn't cave, and I thought tonight we just didn't make the plays defensively that day.
03:09 that we needed to make in a game like this.
03:13 But it's a game that we can definitely build on, especially after you come out of a game like the Auburn game.
03:21 You know, I didn't know which way we would go, but I thought we played pretty well,
03:25 and you got a tippy hat to Bill and his team because they did everything they needed to do to secure the win down the stretch.
03:33 We just didn't get it done.
03:35 Over here. Did you encourage Trey to be more aggressive and go to the rim today?
03:41 He seemed to be more aggressive than he's been the last few games.
03:45 No. You know, I just encourage him to play hard and do the things that I think he's capable of doing,
03:54 and I thought tonight he finally displayed that.
03:57 So, I mean, I don't think anybody is holding Trey back.
04:00 You know, he had a hell of a game tonight. I was happy to see that. I just hope he can build on it.
04:08 Coach, Kansas wasn't a team that was forcing a lot of turnovers coming into this game.
04:12 Did they do anything different against you guys that you didn't see on film?
04:15 I thought fatigue set in.
04:17 You know, I played Cups and Gallo the whole second half, and I thought fatigue set in.
04:24 Gallo had about three turnovers coming down the stretch and ended up with five turnovers,
04:30 and that's normally not him, but I thought the fatigue factor and the fact that we played him
04:37 the minutes that we did kind of hurt us a little bit.
04:41 Zion, would you center McDaniel?
04:44 Mike, Malik and Khalil were both under 50 percent from the field today.
04:48 Did you feel like Kansas did anything different, or what do you just think led to that today?
04:53 Well, we knew coming into the game that it was going to be our starting five pretty much against their starting five,
05:00 and their starting five won out.
05:05 No, I thought Ware didn't get a whole lot of good looks.
05:10 Malik had a few good looks inside that he just didn't complete,
05:15 but for the most part I thought they played a pretty good ball game.
05:20 I got to get Malik rebounding the ball a little bit more.
05:23 That might help us.
05:25 Daniel, front left one.
05:26 Yeah, you mentioned how kind of after Auburn you were unsure of how your team would respond.
05:31 I guess what maybe happened throughout the week or what did you see that kind of inspired confidence,
05:36 not only for Saturday but then maybe how things can play out during the week?
05:40 Well, as a coach I'm going to always have confidence in my team.
05:43 We just had to go back to work, and we put a good week of work in,
05:49 and we kind of put the Auburn game behind us because nobody wants to sit through that as a coach,
05:56 and as a player you don't want to go through that.
06:00 But we did, and I thought we rebounded tonight, but again, we didn't win.
06:07 So we got to go back to work tomorrow and get ready for our next two games.
06:10 next two games.
