Unrelenting rain has caused widespread flooding in Queensland's far north. Emergency alerts have been issued for several areas including Cairns.

00:00 Parts of far north Queensland have received more than half a metre of rain over the past
00:07 24 hours and that is set to continue for some time yet.
00:12 I'm here in the Cairns suburb of Caravonica where there is significant flooding happening
00:18 at the moment.
00:19 Cars are pushing through trying to get to their homes or leaving the area.
00:25 We're seeing four wheel drives pushing through water right up against their bonnet.
00:31 Early this morning residents across Cairns were sent an emergency text message telling
00:37 them to move to higher ground.
00:40 Parts to the north and west of the Cairns area have also been told to move to higher
00:47 ground.
00:48 That's residents in the Mount Malloy, South Edge, Coranda, Byboora and Mareeba area.
00:55 People in the Barron River and Mations Beach area are at particular risk of flooding.
01:02 Roads are cut across the region.
01:05 There is no respite from this rain and it looks set to continue for some time yet.
