00:00 - Listen, actually, hello. - Hi.
00:01 - Good Lord, this is one of those movies.
00:04 I was speaking to Emerald Fennell about it a few weeks ago
00:07 and I said it's one of those that I kind of wish
00:09 I could have walked straight into one of these junket rooms
00:11 straight after the film.
00:13 - Yeah. - Dissect it immediately.
00:14 - You're feeling like somebody has like slipped a hand
00:17 under your underbelly and given a tickle.
00:19 (laughing)
00:20 That's how she describes it.
00:21 I feel like a prudish old lady watching it.
00:24 It's been out for a bit now,
00:26 your families and friends have seen it.
00:27 Like what has been the reaction you've been getting
00:29 from people, 'cause it's not an ordinary movie.
00:33 - No, no, my family has surprisingly loved it.
00:37 And you know, they are, you know,
00:39 I did not think my mum was gonna,
00:42 they're gonna enjoy some of the scenes
00:44 and she absolutely loved it.
00:45 I think that is the really exciting thing
00:49 about this film, especially is you really don't know
00:52 the way the audience are gonna react.
00:53 Like it really takes people by surprise
00:57 and I think that depends on one of the things
00:59 that we've spoken about is,
01:01 Emerald loves to challenge people's comfort levels
01:05 when talking about things like desire
01:07 and sexuality and power. - Power.
01:11 - And some people don't,
01:12 we don't often have those conversations out loud.
01:15 And so it's weird to be confronted with it on screen
01:17 because I think a lot of people that you would expect
01:20 to have, you know, quite like a,
01:22 oh, I love that film reaction,
01:23 sometimes don't and they feel quite confronted by it.
01:26 Or the people that you think might be quite confronted
01:28 about it actually really, really love it.
01:30 And it's really taking different,
01:32 it's showing itself in different ways every time.
01:36 I kind of love it.
01:37 - I watched it in a screening room right at the front
01:40 on my own.
01:41 There was like lots of people there,
01:42 but I was kind of, you know when you're at the front seat,
01:44 so I couldn't sense what was going on around me.
01:46 And if I watched it again,
01:47 I'd like to just like watch other people's reactions
01:49 to certain scenes.
01:50 I won't say it on camera because there's so many things
01:52 that you don't want to ruin for people, but Christ.
01:55 How different a sort of project did this feel?
01:58 How abnormal did this feel to other things?
02:00 'Cause Archie did "Midsommar"
02:01 which was pretty freaking out there.
02:03 But this just feels, this just feels completely,
02:07 like there must be times reading a script when you go,
02:10 "Holy crap, are we gonna get away with this?
02:12 "Are we gonna put this on film?"
02:14 - It's so, I remember reading the script in a cafe
02:17 and being like audible and fit, like I was like,
02:20 (gasps)
02:21 and like, "Oh my God," and everything.
02:22 I've never read anything.
02:24 Oh my God.
02:25 I'd never read anything like it.
02:26 And I think there is that,
02:27 that's the amazing thing about Emerald is she goes there.
02:30 I think she's one of the most fearless people,
02:34 if not the most person I've ever met.
02:35 She's so just like, "Let's push it.
02:37 "Let's just go there."
02:38 And why not?
02:41 Like I think making films or making art in any way
02:44 is a space to do that.
02:45 And so, you know, I think that's a really exciting feeling.
02:50 Are we gonna get away with this?
02:51 I remember watching it with,
02:53 she showed it to me and Richard
02:56 and Paul was with us as well in like April.
02:59 And I just remember the three of us looked at her
03:01 and we're like, "Are you gonna?"
03:03 And she was like, "Am I gonna get away with it?"
03:04 And we were like, "Who cares?"
03:06 - Who cares? - We're gonna be great.
03:07 - Who cares? - Just go for it.
03:08 - I think it's rare to get that as an audience member as well
03:10 'cause you're rarely shocked at things.
03:12 I can imagine things being weird on set
03:14 when you're filming like an awkward scene,
03:16 but to sit there and go, "The grave and the bath,"
03:18 and there's all sorts that go on there
03:20 that you're like, "Wow, this is, I'm watching this,"
03:22 which is quite a buzz.
03:24 What do you think it is the fascination people have
03:26 with the sort of like, the wealthy and the well-bred?
03:31 'Cause there's a kind of envy about it, a voyeurism.
03:35 There's a complicated sympathies
03:38 with people who seem completely different to you.
03:40 What do you guys think it is that gets us going?
03:42 - Well, the majority of us are Oliver.
03:44 You know, we are on the outside looking in.
03:47 We are, it's such a small percentage of us
03:51 that get to experience us, like I'm part of it, I'm not.
03:56 I did, this was an education for me too.
03:58 You know, there's such a small percentage of people
04:00 that get to experience life like that.
04:02 And the things that go on behind closed doors,
04:06 you know, when our imaginations kind of run wild.
04:11 And so any kind of peek behind the curtain,
04:14 knowing that you're entering a world
04:15 where people really do get away with murder,
04:18 like you, it's just endlessly fascinating
04:21 knowing what happens in our real world
04:25 of Epstein's and Galen's and all these different people,
04:28 you know, and people, what wealth does.
04:31 You know, we are just,
04:33 of course we're endlessly fascinated by it,
04:35 but also, you know, we're also attracted to shiny things
04:40 like moss, like, and it's just also, I think,
04:43 interesting to look at those things shine
04:47 and see how they do.
04:48 - Yeah, I think you got a point.
04:49 I was both like horrified,
04:50 but then there's a little dark point in me
04:51 which is going, I'd love to get that pie.
04:54 Well, congratulations guys.
04:55 - Thanks so much.
04:56 - I'm very much looking forward to watching this
04:57 with the missus and seeing her reaction live.
05:01 You don't need any more kind of best wishes
05:02 and good luck with it.
05:03 - Oh, thank you.
