Why Leonardo DiCaprio Is RELIEVED He LOST His First Oscar Nom (Flashback)
Transcript
00:00 The nominees for Actor in a Supporting Role are Leonardo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
00:06 I remember being really paranoid about ever having to go up in front of a billion people.
00:11 Leonardo DiCaprio knows how to put on an Oscar-worthy performance.
00:16 I'm going down! I'm not gonna make it!
00:19 That diamond could be priceless! We split it and you get your family. Once again, it'd be yes or no.
00:25 You'd be relentless!
00:27 You sit there like a f***ing baboon!
00:31 In total, he's earned six acting nods and one win in 2016 for The Revenant.
00:38 And the Oscar goes to...
00:41 Leonardo DiCaprio.
00:44 Leo's Oscars journey started 30 years ago,
00:50 when the then-19-year-old was up for his first Academy Award, Best Supporting Actor, for What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
00:57 I'm gonna be your Gilbert.
00:59 'Cause I'm Gilbert.
01:00 I'd say the most difficult part was making it reality.
01:03 Lasse, before I got the part, told me that he wanted this to be...
01:06 If you met Arnie on the street, he wanted it to be somebody that you could completely believe.
01:12 The film, which also starred Johnny Depp and Juliette Lewis,
01:15 saw Leo playing a young, intellectually disabled man, a role he really put in the work for.
01:22 Each person with a disability like that has different mannerisms.
01:26 I met with about ten of them at home, and I basically just, like, made it more for myself.
01:34 I tried to use it for myself, and I got the part, and then I studied more,
01:38 and we developed more into the character by looking at more kids.
01:42 Hey! Hey!
01:46 Just to create the whole character that I made, and investing all that time in making a character,
01:52 and, like, getting into his mind frame, and it was completely different from who I am.
01:57 I'm pretty proud of myself at that age that I was that passionate about something and a character,
02:03 so that paid off a lot for me, and I'm very proud of that movie.
02:07 Following the film's release, critics raved over Leo's performance.
02:12 Mama! Stop it now! Stop, Mama!
02:17 Earning him nods at both the Golden Globes and Academy Awards.
02:22 I got nominated, and I started getting great reviews for Gilbert Grape and whatnot.
02:27 The year's been exciting, but I haven't been able to experience it with my friends and, you know, enjoy it back home,
02:32 but it's still been fun anyway. I've met a lot of new people and just enjoying life right now.
02:38 I'm definitely nervous, but at the same time, it's just--it's an honored nervousness, you know?
02:44 I'm just so happy to be here.
02:46 But once the big day arrived, there was one thing the young actor wasn't looking forward to.
02:53 I didn't quite have the concept that if you ever gave a speech at the Oscars, like, a billion people are watching you,
02:59 so as soon as I heard that, I remembered saying, "I really don't want to have a speech even prepared
03:05 because I just don't want to go up there." That's what I remember.
