00:00 In the run up to Christmas now more than ever independent businesses are calling on locals for their support.
00:08 Last year has been a really strange year for everyone really in the independent scene in Liverpool.
00:13 But yeah we're all here, we're still fighting, we're still alive and yeah this Christmas we're looking out to buy local, shop local and support your local shop or your restaurant that's been there for a long time.
00:27 The cost of Christmas is up nearly a quarter in three years. This is according to analysis from the Centre for Economics and Business Research.
00:36 If you don't use them you lose them and that's a lot of places in Liverpool, if that's cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs are declining, restaurants are declining and it's been really tough but the ones that you really want to stay open they need your money this Christmas.
00:52 A government backed study showed that for every £10 spent at your local shop £3.85 was recirculated back into the local economy.
01:01 The report reveals that by choosing to support local independent businesses online or in person they can actually double the amount of money that stays in their local economy.
01:12 It's basically very very simple if people use my shop and spend money there I can employ local staff and I can buy products from local other businesses so that money sort of stays in the area.
01:24 Mersey made stocks a wide range of products created by local artists and makers.
01:31 Four years ago we started and we had 30 businesses who we were selling and showcasing their work now we've got 150.
01:38 So a lot of them are local to here, they're all within 50 mile radius of the shop and we actually also opened a small store over in West Kirby at the end of July.
01:47 So over there we're also showcasing a lot of whirl makers so you've got pictures of Hilbury Island and things like that for example so yeah you can support basically people in your community.
01:56 According to a survey from YouGov, 8 in 10 Britons who celebrate Christmas find giving presents to be important.
02:04 You know we've been really really lucky and I think the support we've got since we've opened those few years ago has been just been wonderful to see.
02:12 You know we've managed to win some awards recently, Best Retail Business and the MIB Merseyside Independent Business Award.
02:18 And that was a real recognition for us that people are sort of understanding what we're trying to do.
02:22 After a few years of disruption from the pandemic, it seems people will not let cost stop them from celebrating.
02:29 However, the impact of inflation means consumers are spending much more and ending up with less.
02:35 During lockdown we've had the busiest time we've ever had in our shops history and the community spirit was great.
02:42 Everyone was saying we'll shop local, we're happy to use the small independence.
02:46 People realised that if you didn't have them and you did only have a supermarket that was five miles away from you, if you need a few items it's not really convenient at all.
02:56 So the community spirit during lockdown was amazing. Let's get back to that, let's get back to that community spirit, shopping local.
