00:00 Blow that building up, this wall.
00:02 We're just gonna blow some stuff up
00:03 and hopefully that'll look cool.
00:05 I'm Zack Snyder, and we're on the set of "Rebel Moon."
00:08 We've been in pre-production for quite a while.
00:11 We're gonna shoot for 152 days,
00:12 so this is the start of a long journey.
00:14 These are the scarecrows, actually,
00:16 that we're gonna put out in the wheat field.
00:17 Sam and Eris will be putting those up
00:19 when Jimmy sees them.
00:20 The camera tests have gone really well.
00:21 We were reviewing all their looks.
00:23 Everyone's costumes are done.
00:24 Or at least there's, like, a prototype that we like.
00:26 The makeup is close, so all that stuff is on schedule.
00:29 What I try and do when we're making a movie
00:31 is we build a gym, we try and train everybody,
00:33 and it's part of a cathartic experience
00:35 of sort of joining the cast.
00:36 There's this camaraderie and common area
00:38 where everyone can kind of interact.
00:39 For some, it will be a place of transformation.
00:41 They really become these embedded athletes.
00:44 We built a town.
00:45 I think it took about four months to build it.
00:47 It was quite a process.
00:48 In pre-production, you have this feeling
00:50 like everything's balancing.
00:51 You're like, "I can't keep this balanced anymore.
00:53 I gotta start knocking these things down."
00:55 Yeah, we're at that point, so excited to film.
00:58 So it's day one, take one.
01:00 So we're getting ready.
01:01 Diamond's gonna be walking out,
01:03 and we're gonna see if we can't make one shot at least.
01:05 So that means that we just...
01:07 -We'll have to go pick that up again. -Yep.
01:10 If it's so good, maybe we'll just say,
01:11 "That's it, that's the movie. One shot."
01:13 What do you want to do for the other 140 days?
01:15 -Go to Bora Bora? -Coachella.
01:17 -Coachella! That'd be cool. -Yeah.
01:19 Action!
01:20 It's a really physical thing, making a movie,
01:25 especially operating.
01:26 I try and train hard as I can before,
01:28 just 'cause I don't want to miss days,
01:30 and then on the weekend, we try and train pretty hard.
01:32 Our cameras are overbuilt,
01:33 and the lenses I made are super heavy.
01:35 The camera's substantial.
01:36 The process of physically shooting is exhausting.
01:39 We're filming Tarak, Tami, the Benu today.
01:43 And be a little more like...
01:45 -There? -Even more, yeah, like...
01:46 -Forehead to forehead, I mean. -Okay, like there?
01:48 Yeah, like that.
01:50 -And eyes closed, yeah? -Yeah, sure.
01:53 [CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKING]
01:55 Today we're shooting Cora's first big fight scene.
01:58 I think it's day 47.
02:00 If we do three, two, one, go,
02:02 and go is throw.
02:04 -Okay. -Right?
02:05 Ready, and three, two, one, go!
02:08 [GRUNTS]
02:09 -Just do a little wrap around. -Sure.
02:12 [GRUNTS]
02:13 Ready, and action!
02:15 [GRUNTS]
02:16 [GRUNTS]
02:17 -If you see him like this... -Yeah.
02:19 ...he's gonna go, "Wham!"
02:21 And that's him.
02:22 'Cause the only thing is, like, right now, it's cool.
02:24 But just 'cause in the rhythm, you see him,
02:26 and you chamber, and you throw.
02:28 So just quick, quick, 'cause I wanna see him.
02:31 -Yes, that's exactly it. Perfect. -Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:33 [GRUNTS]
02:34 [GRUNTS]
02:35 [GRUNTS]
02:36 Nice cut!
02:38 It's a marathon, so you don't run too hard,
02:40 but inevitably you do.
02:41 That's just the sort of process of making a film.
02:43 It's like a creative act, it's like sculpture or something.
02:46 Through force of physical will,
02:47 you have to, like, kind of make the things happen,
02:49 and that's really satisfying.
02:50 For me, anyway, in the end.
02:51 We made it to day 108.
02:58 If everything goes well, 44 more days.
03:00 When you're in a green-screen environment,
03:02 the actors really have to sell what you don't see.
03:04 Just trying to take what you know in your imagination,
03:07 to be true, that we don't see now,
03:08 but having to always have that in your head.
03:10 And the actors have done an amazing job
03:11 sort of selling what we will see later.
03:13 That's a thing I've always felt pretty comfortable with,
03:15 working in a green-screen environment.
03:16 For me to communicate to the actors where everything was,
03:19 worked out really well,
03:20 and it actually saved a ton of time.
03:22 The cheats are always that one set piece that you have
03:24 that you kind of anchor the reality in,
03:26 and once you do that, you can pretty much understand
03:28 spatially how it works.
03:30 We are at Blue Cloud Movie Ranch.
03:37 Yesterday we're shooting on stage at Sunset Gower.
03:40 A little over a year ago,
03:41 where we were shooting the test with Sophia
03:43 to see if she would be the one to be in the movie.
03:45 Today we're back doing Cora's origin village story,
03:48 and it is the final day of shooting,
03:50 so I'm excited about that.
03:51 Everyone's done an amazing job.
03:53 It's been just really an honor to work with these people.
03:55 It's always exciting to finish shooting,
03:57 really have all the pieces of the puzzle
03:59 that you have to put together in editorial.
04:01 So get ready for Rebel Moon.
04:02 It's coming.
04:03 (dramatic music)
