00:00 We had a tip-off that a regional council had provided detailed information about Nathaniel
00:08 Train and the legal activity to police nearly a year before he took part in the Wianbilla
00:16 killings. We put a right to information request to the Goondiwindi Regional Council for any
00:24 correspondence between police and the council and were able to obtain emails from a council
00:30 officer that showed he had provided quite specific details about illegal activity involving
00:38 Nathaniel Train. That illegal activity was the fact that Nathaniel Train had breached
00:44 the New South Wales/Queensland border during COVID-19 restrictions. At the same time as
00:50 that breach he had been reported to be carrying firearms and had then gone on the run in Queensland
00:56 with those firearms. The council officer had been so specific he had even identified Nathaniel
01:03 Train, his name, and he provided that information to police.
01:08 So Rory, what is the significance of this email?
01:13 It appears to show police had nearly a year to investigate illegal conduct by Nathaniel
01:20 Train in the lead up to him taking part in those killings. It also seems to indicate
01:26 that they were unable to locate him or interview him or take any sort of further action to
01:34 curtail his access to firearms in the months leading up to the Wianbilla killings. There
01:43 also the Queensland Police have said they are conducting their own investigation into
01:49 the handling of that probe. They have their ethical standards unit conducting an investigation
01:56 into that and a report from that investigation will be provided to the Queensland Coroner
02:03 in February of next year.
