00:00 2023 has been a big year for Newcastle and for the whole of the North East. So we are
00:07 taking a look at a few things that have happened in Newcastle and beyond this year. Of course
00:12 in January the Clean Air Zone launched in Newcastle so it has now been in place for
00:16 nearly a whole year. When it was launched people didn't seem very sure on what it actually
00:21 was.
00:22 So do you know what the Clean Air Zone is?
00:23 Well yeah that's where they're gonna strip people off and charge a motor and come visit
00:26 people for go shopping, hospital visits.
00:29 I asked you before a bit about the Clean Air Zone so I'm just gonna ask you again. Do you
00:32 know what it is?
00:33 I don't actually really know Pet, I'm sorry I don't.
00:36 But now a year on the public seem to understand it a lot more. Also at the beginning of the
00:41 year we heard the news that the North East was going to receive a devolution deal. The
00:46 deal would give more power to the North East and there will be an elected North East Mayor
00:49 in the future. We also celebrated a big birthday for a landmark in the region. Yes the Angel
00:55 of the North turned 25 this year and kids from local schools came out to celebrate.
00:59 There was more good news at the beginning of the year as Newcastle United had made it
01:03 to the final of the Carabao Cup.

01:25 However the luck didn't continue as they did lose but the Geordies continued to celebrate
01:30 despite the loss.
01:31 More news came out as we went into the year about the Tyne and Wear Metro trains. The
01:35 brand new trains made their way to the North East and will hopefully be ready to use in
01:39 the new year.
01:41 Once again this year there was a lot of focus on knife crime in the area with a lot of campaigns
01:45 popping up to help people understand the dangers. One of those was created by the friends of
01:50 Tomas Olijac who started a petition to get more lights along the lines where Tomas sadly
01:55 lost his life.
01:57 During the summer there was a lot that went on from Sam Fender performing at St James's
02:00 Park to the Bike Grove reboot being announced and of course we had the Showing the Sheep
02:05 trail launch in Newcastle City Centre.
02:07 There was also a huge fire along Carlisle Square that closed the central motorway for
02:12 a while and caused a lot of disruption in the city.
02:16 But back to the sporting news we then had the Great North Run which is always an iconic
02:19 weekend for the North East.
02:22 However this year was Mo Farah's last race of his career and of course we had to ask
02:26 him for a few Geordie phrases.
02:29 "No man, why I man, tune tune."
02:33 More sporting news coming out this year is Newcastle United managed to get into the Champions
02:37 League and play so many iconic stadiums.
02:41 This year has also been big for strike action across multiple services including Go North
02:45 East who went on strike for weeks over pay and conditions which meant that no buses were
02:50 running but after voting to agree on a deal the service was back to normal.
02:55 So there has been a lot that has gone on in 2023 and we will just have to see what 2024
03:00 brings to the Geordies across Newcastle.
